I don't think she's gorgeous, or anything, but I don't see how anybody can call her ugly. She has a well-proportioned face, and her nose is hardly enormous. My earliest memory of her was as an Indiana Jones parody on Shalom Sasame, the Jewish version of Sasame Street. It was called "Jerusalem Jones and the Lost Afikomen", and she was totally badass. Overall, she strikes me as a genuinely good person who doesn't take herself too seriously, and that's something that I admire in anybody, famous or no.

I agree very much with this. From everything I've read and heard about her, she seems like a really decent, kind person. It irks me that people get so het up about how unattractive they find her, as though they take her face as a personal affront. How dare she be a successful actress without being beautiful! Not only is that George Hearn in that picture (not Len Cariou), at least Johnny Depp did an accent; it was cockney, if slightly lighter than Mrs Lovett's. That makes sense too since Sweeney is literate and therefore might be slightly better educated than Mrs Lovett.

I love George Hearn and all, but his diction-coach-American accent is hardly more realistic than Johnny Depp's cockney. And his final scene is extremely Large Ham, I gotta admit.

I agree it was horrifically misguided for them to try to make Mrs Lovett sympathetic. She's the real evil in the play.
