It's so obvious that - once the technical side of streaming is solved - all of the value is in your back catalog. And once you get to that point, the actual entertainment conglomerates are the ones that have all the leverage and are going to extract all the value. And, obviously, that's going to suck for consumers, and we're not going to do anything about it, because that's what we've made the decision to do as a society. We give them all the money and power.

I am the exact opposite - I hope it never comes back. I think he’s worlds hotter with the short hair. I never paid any attention really to Thor until the haircut, and then suddenly it was like “oh hello there.”

This. Even though Spike is a good 140 years older than Buffy, he didn't perv on her as a teen, or act like she was going to 'save' him.

Angel was just so...woe is me, and gloomy, and jerky. And stalking her as a fifteen/sixteen year old and being all googly-eyed over her....yuck.

I never liked that 'ship. Spike/Buffy had a massive amount of issues, but at least it didn't make me want to slap people.

I'd settle for anime that's not a shonen battle tournament series, isn't about the romantic lives of high-school aged protagonists, and has 0 panty shots

I wish I had a clue what movies you were talking about, but the initials mean nothing to me so basically 'this Star Wars movie was better than this one!' and i have *no* idea.

I...don't really remember the newer ones all that well, anyway, so....
*shrug*

Re: Just curious... do you think your parents were/are good parents?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No and no. My parents played favorites with my sibling and I to the point where I'd figured it out by age 6. My father was the good guy and forced my mom to be the disciplinarian all the time, and we as kids resented her for that, which totally wasn't fair to her. And for all their claims of being good liberals, my parents were two of the most classist, racist, sexist people I've ever known. I don't hate them, but I've got no use for either of them. My father is dead and I miss him, but I haven't spoken to my mother in over a year and her example of motherhood is a main reason why I chose never to have children myself.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, most people look at me like I'm insane when I say that.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I always did wonder why no one I ever talked to seemed to find Angel/Buffy as creepy as I did, considering she was just a kid in high school when they were together.

Only Lovers Left Alive *was* a wig. He and Tilda talked about how they were made of yak hair or something and really uncomfortable.

I still don't think Loki's hair looked bad, though. People talk about wigs, but I can't tell - i only ever notice extensions when you have short hair that magically has long hair growing out from under it.

As an adult, I've come to realise that my mom is probably the best, compared to the mothers of the kids I went to school with. She is wise and she is kind, she's not afraid to speak her mind and she very rarely judges situations wrongly. Very little advice that she's given me has turned out wrong. She's one of my best friends, and truly a good person.

My stepdad is nice, and unquestionably loves all the kids. His parenting has been good, though he's had his moments. Like how he insisted that my brother was "a great talent at the piano" when he was mangling classical pieces with his lack of fine motor skills and musical intuition. He always was kinda preoccupied with The Son, but I don't think he ever saw that himself. He'd certainly deny it if anyone were to accuse him of ignoring his daughters!

My dad is very, very nice, to the point where he is honestly kind of a doormat. He's always helping people - including me and my half-brother there, but his inability to say "no" also means that twenty years after they parted ways, he's still having to deal with my other brother's crazy mom. I also think his conflict avoidance was part of why it took him so long to truly confront the crazy mom about the way she was treating me (to his defense: this was in the nineties, when "emotional abuse" wasn't a thing). He broke it off with her becaues she made him choose between her and me, and given the exhausting story about visitations rights and custody battles that followed, it is probably the greatest sacrifice anyone has ever made for my sake.

Yeah, I think they really were. I loved - love - them to pieces, enjoyed hanging out with them, and was always so proud of them and in awe of them.

I had a good childhood and a good relationship with my parents, and miss my dad (he passed about ten years ago) and my mom (she lives in another state with my sister) every single day.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The first and most important lens through which to see Angel (at least during seasons 1-3 of Buffy) is as an example of a specific kind of teenage girl fantasy romantic object.

Focusing primarily on the literal, textual characteristics of Angel (IE, being a 200-year-old vampire) and missing the role that he actually plays in the show doesn't make sense to me.

Now obvs you can still say that the idea of the sensitive slightly older man as romantic target is bad, but that's a really important dimension of what's going on in the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If it works in the context of the movie, then it doesn't matter if they're actually stupid or not.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The 12th doctor himself ruined Doctor Who, tbh. He was always so goddamn grouchy and unlikable I couldn't bring myself to watch any of his episodes. I've only seem a bit of the new one so far, but at least she's fun and charming.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It was okay in the books. Fell totally flat in the films for me.

Huh. I love both movies but TFA is my favorite of the two. Different strokes, eh!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Whereas I don't understand prioritising the archetype the show was going for over the character's actual, in-universe history and behaviour. And in-universe, Angel was a significantly older man with obsessive and stalker tendencies and a non-zero chance of flipping out and torturing people to death if Buffy pressed the wrong emotional button. Archetype or no archetype, that's not really a healthy relationship goal.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who pretty much solely watched the movies growing up, I could never understand how she even had fans in the first place. I've always felt like recasting her would've helped, since a lot of it seemed to be the actress not knowing how to express any kind of emotion (other than the times she came across as vaguely creepy, I guess)?

Rex Orange County, Billie Eilish, Sir Sly, Allie X

And I made myself a 70s playlist that has 250+ songs and no repeat artists that I'm still adding to, that I've been digging at work recently.

I made it this far being raised by an alcoholic and a parent.

Bit overbearing, I'd probably be farther along in life if they weren't.
