I hate gore, but I can find plenty of horror to watch. The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, Get Out, The Others, The Wailing, and Under the Shadows. None of them are lovecraftian, but they are good.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm fine with gore, but you can build up the suspense & create a really terrifying atmosphere & feel to the film without ever becoming a gore-fest.

Maybe it's because I'm only a casual fan and haven't read the extended universe books, etc. but... Snoke's death was a surprise because it didn't seem like the films made much use of his character before killing him off? It felt like a waste.

I love atmospheric stuff, but as long as it still explains the story through not telling/showing, and don't do that bullshit 'it's all up to you what happened!' cop out shit. No. I want a demon, or a ghost, or it to have been a real person all along.

You can show horror through non-gore/atmosphere/good story telling and still have proper endings and not lose that horror vibe. If you can't, then you're not a good story teller to begin with.

Snoke was boring, agreed.

Palpatine & Snoke were used almost identically, but Palpatine had presence & incited a feeling of dread & fear in 8-year-old me.

Not sure if Snoke doesn't have the same effect because I'm older & less easily impressed or because of the difference between a real actor with makeup vs an actor playing a CGI character. Or a bit of both.
