LOL - nice try! :¬D So now that we've had Bryan Ferry in #129 and Brian Eno in #146, are there any more secrets featuring members of Roxy Music to come? :¬)

Heh. Good, I'm glad somebody else caught that one.

I hate stereotypical teenagers. I just don't get all the teeny things. They annoy the crap out of me. I always cheer for the bad guys in those kind of movies.

I do hope that you're a troll. If not, buy a cat or something; don't inflict your son with your fangirlish obsession.

175, furthermore--

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it occurs to me that the most likely reaction to your son's name from people who know what it is probably won't be "OMG how could you give him a girl's name, how cruel".

Instead, it'll probably be, "Ignorant parents must've picked his name with no idea what it means. I'll bet his mother has a Chinese tattoo that says 'golden duck with rice to go'."

...Consider this, please.

116. I was really happy when I saw Harriet again. I liked her, but was so angry after what she did in Christmas Invasion.

143. SUCH A GREAT MOVIE!!

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
131. They.. what? No. HOW?

173. I doubt it. I prefer dubs too, but I tend to go with subs on older series because the voice work tends to be worse.

175. What the fuck? You're too selfish to be a mom. Don't do that to your kid, and don't project on to your kid. If you need a kid called Sakura that desperately, TRY AGAIN FOR A GIRL.

TB#2: The only reason I'd like her is because she lets me Z-target.

175

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I've just got to say that the only two real people I've ever heard of with that name were men. Otherwise I've only encountered it in fiction.

175. Uhhh why can't you just adopt a girl? Your husband and many more people will know it's a girls name. Unless you live in like....podunk south. Even then I think it's pretty obvious it's the name of a flower and flowers are not boyish.

[identity profile] xxshebeexx.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's obvious? 99.9% of the people I know wouldn't know what it meant. They might think it's a girly sounding name (maybe) but they certainly wouldn't know it's a flower or even that it's Japanese. Depends on where you live.

[identity profile] dreamdischarger.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
115. UNF UNF UNF Zac and Angela. <3 Ilu.

125. Why?

Mmm, delicious Bones secrets lately. :D

164. It's my OTP also anon. Don't feel bad.

173.

[identity profile] hi-no-neko.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. SO MUCH.

Probably the only series I watch subs-only is CardCaptor Sakura, because . . . well, you know.

Cardcaptors was good enough as Cardcaptors, but it's practically a different show! x3

That, and things that are unlikely to ever get English dubs. Ah, Super Doll Licca-chan . . .
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (vaguely dissatisfied)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
TB!5 No you don't.
DIW!1 Well, you don't have to weigh that much to be "overweight" to catty fangirls anyway.
145 Based on that picture, Murderface would kill everyone.
146 This must either be an odd attempt at humor or just a really confusing secret. What is up with the soccer ball, baseball and hockey puck, and why would you put a picture of yourself in a secret? If that even is you. C'mon.
147 Hyde was so much better than Eric, though. I know a ton of guys like Eric (pretty much every indie rock douche I knew in high school and college is like him).
152 Dude, that's so old and obscure I don't even know what that is. You've gotten me intrigued...
158 That movie sucked. I hate it when people make overgeneralistic satire to comment on society, it's annoying and it happens way too fucking often.
163 I don't want to "save the world," because, frankly, utopian society is never going to exist. I do try to help out however I can, sometimes I volunteer my time, but the well-being of society shouldn't be my highest obligation. I have a family. And every world leader devotes time to a hobby or some kind of pastime, so why shouldn't I get to?
tl;dr I'm not buying your guilt trip.
175 I'm so glad I'm not your son. Because I'd fucking hate you for the rest of my life.
188 Obvious gay couple with adopted foreign child is obvious

[identity profile] shy-nerthuserce.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
*No* idea about the sports items either, but you guessed right that the pic isn't of the OP - it's actually musician Brian Eno, of Roxy Music and U2 producer fame. :¬)

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
175. I have mixed feelings about this. I have a strange name, and it's not that I ever got mocked for it, it's that no one can pronounce it. I know it sounds vaguely racist to say it's a bad idea to give your child a Japanese name if you live in a country that speaks a different language, but trust me, your child will learn to hate every name that starts with "S" that isn't his.

It's not that the name is a girly name. Honestly, it doesn't sound all that feminine to me, personally. It's just that...Every substitute teacher that pauses when they reach his name on the role, every person that is hard of hearing and ask him to repeat himself again and again, everyone who shakes his hand and gives him that unsure smile when he introduces himself because they know they'll fuck it up when they say it - your kid will really start to resent these people.

Just...if you insist on doing this to him, give him a cool, normal middle name to go by. Because he will at least go through a phase where he will hate his name. When he's young, and goes on field trips and all the other kids are buying those pre-personalized badges or mugs, his name won't be there, and he will blame you. But if you give him a middle name he likes - that is heard of, and common, maybe he'll get over it.

Just...be careful. He could grow to love his name - I grew to love mine. But everyone's different. And if when he turns eighteen, he wants to change it, don't try to stop him - you won't be able to, and it'll only make him hate you.

[identity profile] xxshebeexx.livejournal.com 2008-09-14 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get where you're coming from, and you say it all in such a sweet and understanding way, but I'm not entirely sure I can agree with you. I grew up in Germany with an Irish name, which was 100% unpronounceable for everyone I came across there, even after telling them how to several times. Family friends I've known my whole life still say it wrong. Most people think I'm a boy when they read my name before they've met me. Just because they don't recognise it at all and don't know anyone else with a name like it, with foreign accents and all over the letters.

But it makes you different. Sometimes, yes, I hate it and I wish I had a German name or at least a generic name like Anna or something. Sometimes it was lame to be teased and your name made fun of. But it gets old quick. And having a quirky or unusual name is interesting too. A topic of conversation. An ice-breaker. You're going to be the only in someone's phonebook, you're going to be the one who gets Christmas cards and letters with your name spelt incorrectly (I get that in Ireland too - the world is weird). And to be honest, Sakura isn't half bad. It's easy to say by English standards, easy to spell. Nicknames are doable and most people probably won't even know it's a girl's name. I think a boy wouldn't have too much to complain about with that name - even if he did find out it was a girl's and he was annoyed with his parents. Plenty of names are applied to both genders. It's not the name, really, that's the problem - it's the reasons behind it and the selfishness!

163. What fandom are you in? Almost every fandom I've been seriously involved in has passed the hat, links to good charities, and general advice about how to get through tough situations.

(This is the part, children, where having fans of all ages is a huge help. Where were YOUR friends when disaster struck?)

Start it in your fandom. (How about voter registration? You got 18-year-old Americans? We want 'em. Most states have till the first part of October, so hop to it.)

188. Because they all went to Venture Brothers. Sorry.

163. Without fandom, I'd go insane; my fannish activities are what allow me to keep a straight head and not sink into some kind of funk where I'm unable to do anything. In-between work and school and volunteering, I don't see a problem with having some down-time.

I am not ashamed to say I actually wrote fic for that once. Serious fic, sorta expounding on the things that a kids show couldn't. Like the fact Race would have a metric shit ton of scars, and why his hair was white.
