It's not like any of these actors are jumping into fandom conversations to rain on your parade. Fans need to stop trying to get actors to side with their headcanons and ships, especially if they're going to be put off by the actors not agreeing with them.

they are designing clothes for actual people to wear

Wrong. They're not designing clothes for actual people to wear. They're designing clothes for models and celebrities to wear so that everyone else will buy their sunglasses and belts and coin purses. Because that's all actual people can afford, and that's all the designers actually sell.

Fuck. Fuck.

FUCK.

I think I just inferred what the joke is.

FUCK.

No. Nope. I am wrong. I inferred wrong. I refuse to accept it.

I think you're missing the sarcasm in this comment

Oh Lordy. This thread ought to be fun.

Here’s my take on it, OP:

1) The writing for Tony is sometimes inconsistent, especially between movies. His character development is often reset, and it makes him make mistakes that people think he shouldn’t be repeating. It also doesn’t allow him to grow out of being an emotional hot mess a lot of the time.

2) He’s one of the most prominent members of the MCU, and he’s included in other character’s movies/arcs enough that some fans feel that he gets too much attention at the expense of other characters.

3) A lot of people object to what he’s done over the last few movies. (Ultron and Civil War, especially.) It doesn’t help that the latter movie explicitly sets him up in conflict with Steve or that the conflict centred around Tony’s position re: Bucky, a character that gets a lot of sympathy from fans.

4) The fact that he is super rich doesn’t actually help.

All of which is vastly understated, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a BUNCH of stuff, but these are the points I use to explain it to myself when I’m wondering where the sea of Tony hate comes from.

Going from the top of my head...that he's an anti-vaxxer, that he makes light of depression, that he hates fan accounts...

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, and I get that they're bombarded CONSTANTLY with this kind of stuff. But part of being a celebrity is being able to deal with it diplomatically. Boyega could have left off the preachy parenthetical there. And Ridley could have dodged the ship question with more stealth. I think less of them for taking sides.

Seconding this so hard.

I know there are Tony fans who furiously defend every single thing he's ever done and hate on other characters irrationally because they opposed him. And I'm not here for that.

But wow, the hate he gets, and the judgmental side-eyeing his fans get, feels very disproportionate to me.

It depends on the sequel but yes, I understand that completely.

Bonus Secret: A few years ago, I would have wanted a sequel for a film that I liked, but that film didn't do well at the box office. But now, I wouldn't want a sequel since the director and cast have done questionable things that would ruin it all. I'd rather have a tv show reboot with a new and different showrunner and cast.

So you think less of them for answering questions that they're asked instead of side-stepping or completely ignoring the fans that talk to them. Fair enough.

Given how we regularly get Snape wank, I suspect this will be the Avengers wank that will endure for generations.

(My hate boner is for the Russos.)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, they're human and imperfect, the worst.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Fanfic was what taught me that LGBT ships were okay. Surprise surprise, turns out I'm not straight.

Avengers

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm growing to really hate Avengers stuff, and I'm disappointed that Endgame wasn't the bat-nipple moment.

Oh bullshit. Some movies are absolutely better going in not knowing what'll happen. The Sixth Sense is fine knowing the twist in advance, but it's on another level when you don't.

Sophia Burset from Orange is the New Black

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 The inconsistent writing and insertion into other stories soured him for me big time. Iron Man 3 concluded a wonderful character arc about responsibility and personal strength and growth...and then every movie after that completely ignored his decisions there. Ultron negates the ending of IM3, and his actions in Homecoming undermine pretty much everything he said in Civil War (imo). It was too hard for me to keep thinking of him as a hero when the writing was throwing away his biggest heroics.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This is nice, OP. And good for you!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Who here thinks third time will be the charm for Kylo's supposed redemption arc?

Ohh, I'd buy it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
They succeeded in making both sides extremely stupid.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an ongoing story, they're not going to resolve the storyline in the middle.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd argue that while both sides were stupid, at least Steve and his side were understandably stupid. Can't say the same for Tony.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you mean 3000.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But when I ship enemy/hero ships (I don't ship Kylo/Rey much at all), a large part of the fun for me is actually making it work.

DA - Agreed. Reylo mildly piqued my interest after TLJ, but when I went on AO3 looking for fics, I quickly got discouraged by my inability to find fics that actually felt like the put in the work to make Reylo, well, work.

Even in really long fics, where you'd think there'd be plenty of time to sloooowly build their connection and develop their characters and such, what I mostly found was semi-woobified Ben Solo, and sexy pining right from chapter one.

And that's fine. But it's so not my scene.
