Funny secret since it features anime/manga as its main example and in anime/manga tomboyish "LET'S FIGHTING HEART" girls with special skills are more usually about fanservice and male-self-fulfilment than girly girls. The main purpose of main action heroines is so that the staff is able to insert T&A into combat sequences. See: Mai-Hime, Ikkitousen, Ghost in the Shell or Aika.

118. Oh, Otacon. That man needs a hug.
161. It probably doesn't help much that "soft strength" isn't always easy to portray, especially in action settings. I think it's simpler to create a scenario that shows off physical prowess than one that demonstrates a character's resourcefulness, resiliency, and emotional intelligence, for example.

[identity profile] candle-swans.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No offense, but it is really hard to be like, OH WOW, KINGDOM HEARTS AND TSUBASA ARE THE SAME.

For one thing, they are both exactly the same thing--fanservice. For Kingdom Hearts, it's the ability to play through Disney movies with a side of the Final Fantasy characters we know and love.

For Tsubasa, it's exactly the same thing, except for with CLAMP characters, and a lot of these things are very emotional (Sorata and Arashi is probably the most prominent example of this in the early volumes, together and happy). I know it's kind of emotional for a lot of fans of X, knowing what happened to both of them at the end of the series.

I mean, you know they aren't the same characters, really, but it's still really satisfying.

I think that Tsubasa can only really be satisfying if you're a CLAMP fan. It has merits on its own certainly, but the big drive comes from seeing these characters that many people know and love.

Also, a lot of people seem to hate on CLAMP's later artwork, but I don't get it. Their composition is pretty amazing, if exaggerated. I mean, Nomura has his share of design issues.

Re: 128

[identity profile] thickets.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
When I actually started reading Tsubasa, I was pretty unread in CLAMP series. I had read Tokyo Babylon and was reading xxxHOLiC, and that's about it. I was very unfamiliar with both X and Cardcaptor Sakura (and to a large extent I still am) and so a lot of things were lost on me. I was only following it along to keep up with the shared storyline in xxxHOLiC ... until the Acid Tokyo arc (which I almost didn't get too, because that awful storyline with the hovercraft racing almost killed me it was so boring). Then I became a real fan, purely on the basis of the awesome character development and plot twists that are contained in that arc.

So, Tsubasa's a slow burner. A lot of it IS fanservice, but there is more to it than that -- it just requires patience.

I agree with you SO HARD. *cheers you*

Idg all the woman-hating that goes down in fandom sometimes. The whole idea that women can only be "strong" and compelling if they're directly emulating traditionally masculine traits is really irritating.

Editing to add that I have no idea what the fandom for this secret is and I generally hate anime. But I agree with the words there.

161. I have the right as a female, to be pissed off with sexist portrayals of women in anime. WOMEN SUX is NOT the same as 'the portrayal of women in anime is often frustrating and annoying,' because yes, I do get irritated when all the men in a particular series run around and stand up for their beliefs while the main female character waits patiently to be rescued. Many fairytales pissed me off as a child, too.

I hope what you meant to say is that a lot of people dismiss female characters as weak on the basis that they aren't the strongest fighter or don't have magical powers. Dude, people can be strong and able to stand up for themselves without being able to throw a punch. Like Relena from Gundam Wing (who gets bashed all the time) who in the second half of the series turns into an amazing kick ass politician dedicated to pacificism... but no, she SUX because she gets in the way of the slash and is just a creepy stalker, right? Like Hinata from Naruto, who even when she gets her ass beaten down repeatedly, has the courage to stand the fuck up every time.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
The Relena-hate is especially strange, since she doesn't get in the way of any slash.

I've got the impression that half the fandom only watched the first half of the anime anyway, and that may be the reason. She was incredibly annoying in the beginning.

134

[identity profile] doctor-dorothy.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I never blame people for leaving SPN fandom (I've nearly broken up with the show too many times to do that), but I always wonder, Why bandom? What draws SPN fans to that particular fandom so much? Just curious. Also, I find it amusing, cause I imagine bandom would be the fandom Dean would most despise. So if you really want to break up with the show, there's a certain appropriate-ness in going that route! Take that, you stumpy-legged sometime misogynist.

101. Actually, I'm glad he got out of Angel. Nothing sucks more than having your career define by one character. Of course, people will still remember him as Angel, but it's nice he's in a role with a character that isn't like Angel.

107. Depends on which friends they are, if you know what I mean. Just kidding. When I think "Holy shit, I'd hit it" I don't more than a transient moment. I don't think most people would ship a pairing for self-insertion (I don't, I don't like imagining it). It's like a small moment when you put aside that the character doesn't exist and imagine that that person exist. Oh fuck it, it's not something that can be pin down for one person.

122. LOL, whatever, it's not like you're better than me if that's you trying to get that. Why people can let others enjoy their thing?

128. Except that Kingdom Hearts didn't invent the trope. Also, read moar if you want development (I suspect you only read a few volumes). Honestly, Tsubasa is really for the longtime CLAMP fans more than anything. It's not the greatest they done, but I had to defend it for that comment.

137. ;_; Or it's a replay of the Great Depression strip.

139. Hungry is too adorable. I think I might have a girlcrush on her, if you know what I mean~...

161. Err, no. Personally, I don't mind a girl who can show vulnerability, but when they keep perpetuating the same type over and over again in different manga/anime, it gets annoying. They don't want a guy with boobs, they want a girl who kick ass without sacrificing her femininity to do so. They want to see girls other than being the damsel in distress and useless. There's nothing misogynistic about it.

164. Honey and Clover will always be one of my favorite series ever. It is funny that me and my friends were similar to them in college and how much I related to Takemoto. But I do hope I find my path one day.

Despite what everybody thinks, not a troll. I have no problem with you enjoying those things if you wish. If I did, I'd be going around and flaming folks for it, which I don't. I just wanted to be able to say my opinion without a billion hateful replies in my inbox for it.

Like you said, people should have the right to like what the like. The problem if it doesn't feel like I get that. I'm not allowed to enjoy my thing. I say I won't write those things fr people when I offer requests and I sometimes get flames for it.

So, not trying to troll, or bug people, just be honest in the one place I can without getting voted off the island. :)

Hell. Yes.
WHERE IS THE FANDOM? Where are the intelligent fans of Pendragon? Come on. Wouldn't it be cool to see a CourtneyxBobby versus LoorxBobby ship war? To find out if anybody else really thinks that Press is going to pull a Conqueror of Shamballa (FMA movie, btw) and show up in an alternate universe? To see if anybody else thinks that Mark and Aja would be a totally awesome OTP?

(Anon because it's written for 12-year-olds, and I usually consider myself too mature for that kind of book. Well, except for Artemis Fowl. And The Olympians. And Harry Potter. And Inkheart. And... okay, okay, fine. You got me.)

tl;dr: FUCK THIS, I WANT A PENDRAGON FANDOM.

103. I agree with most of the people who said you should just state in the ground rules that you don't take non-con requests. You're doing folks a favor, and hopefully they'll respect that.

Personally, I like non-con, but I would never request it from someone I didn't know shares the same interest. It has way too much potential to be a trigger.

106. hi 2 u persecution complex

115. Oh man, I hear you -- torpedo boobies are scary! Strangely, though, I think the costume might be more forgiving than standard anime fare. You have the corset part to cinch your waist, as well as the draping of the yellow dress part to conceal problem areas on the hips/thighs. The comic SS 2 costume would be even more flattering in that regard. ^^

125. I expected to find her nauseating, but I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find her performance sweet and naturalistic and touching.

No, it's a pretty fucking mediocre series. It's just overhyped to a perverse extreme because OMG CLAMP. And OMG GAY. It's basically just CLAMP giggling about how great and awesome they are without bothering to create new themes, plots, and characters while they're at it.

And while you can argue "adding more angst" constitutes a character development arc (as I'm sure people are/have)... no. It isn't.

161. Oshit. You mean, I hate all women because I enjoy kick-ass female characters and hate whiny damsels-in-distress? With the stupidity that runs rampant in the world today, yup, I fucking well want strong female role models. A person doesn't have to be a 'man with tits' to be strong either. Taking your example, Orihime has had some good moments, though I could do without the squealing. Also, you fail for accusing people of being misogynists; that word needs to be locked away and only used on special occasions, by people who have more than the IQ of cabbage.
