103) I can see why you'd have a problem. But rather than blame people for being confused about where your squicks lie, I think you need to make clear that you do have a squick there -- because it's often not obvious at a glance what is rape and what is consensual bondage and discipline (at least not in static pictures). And it's a pretty easy mistake to make to assume that someone who likes seeing a character bound, beaten and humiliated might be okay with rape, since they look substantially the same. Put it in bold: I only do consensual BDSM requests. That will avoid the awkwardness.

For what it's worth some people are the other way around: They have no interest in a character that would willingly let themselves be hurt and degraded, it seems like weakness. But they do appreciate the horror and drama of rape, because it gives the character a chance to show their inner strength.

107) LOL oh me too. I think if I saw a character I saw hot, at most I'd want to share a friendly platonic dinner. I have no urge to sleep with any of them.

122) Canon is thataway ----> Go enjoy your pure.

126) At least it's an attractive tatoo that could stand for anything.

166) That was one of the most poignant moments on screen ever. Babylon 5 rocks so hard.

161. You know, I don't think you are giving this topic the complexity is deserves.

NO, I don't think women need to be "tough" and "strong" to be a good character. An example of a great female character who ISN'T that is Tohru from Fruits Basket. But she's a complex character with MOTIVATIONS, dynamic emotions, and a story.

However, I have to say. A great deal of female characters in anime are not given the benefit of that sort of development. They're two-dimensional and exist purely to complement the male characters, or to titillate male viewers.

A pretty good way to determine whether a story really contains good, well-written female characters is the Bechdel Test. It should usually have ...

1. At least two main-ish female characters.
2. These characters should talk TO EACH OTHER,
3. And they should talk about SOMETHING OTHER THAN MEN.

That's it. And unfortunately, that can often be difficult to find in a lot of manga. Just look at Death Note ... very few of the main female characters ever even meet each other.

What about Ghost in the Shell? The only major female character is Motoko Kusanagi, who is also the protagonist, and yet she is commonly regarded as the ultimate example of a well-written, strong female in anime and manga.

LOL WAT. Narnia has a thriving fandom on LJ. Especially since the movies came out. There has always been a fandom for the books obviously. It grew with each movie.

Even if slash isn't your thing, [livejournal.com profile] narnia_slash gets updated often, though like most fandoms some of it is really crap. And I am quite sure that there are many more active communities involving subjects that don't make Lewis have kittens in his grave.

I just don't understand how anyone can come out of it thinking that the creators thought all fat people were mean, lazy, stupid, and greedy. The humans we got insight into the lives of weren't any of those things. They'd just lost their sense of wonder and become complacent in their high-speed wish-fulfilling world. It's a metaphor.

Am I the only person on the planet that doesn't think Supernatural is anti-feminist or racist? I mean, they kill off everyone, not just the women and the minority races. And when a good strong character of either of those two categories (although, it's usually women) comes along, it's usually fandom who up rises so hard that the ratings drop and the writing team has nothing left to do but write them off or risk their show getting canceled.

I don't know, maybe I'm not seeing it because I love the show so much, but you can't just say 'all the women die, anti-feminism rah' and ignore the fact that literally everyone but like Bobby has been killed.

Re: 163 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-10-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not, sadly.

There's a difference in the treatment of women and men as recurring characters. There's a difference in the treatment of women as characters. There's a difference in the way they die, in the number of women who are useful as opposed to men. There's a difference in the way they treat male and female villains.

But you're not the only one who doesn't see it.

And trust me, fandom is not that powerful. If Kripke said "fuck off, I'm going to write this my way" and every person who hates the female character stopped watching, they'd still have plenty of casual fans. As I said-- it's gotten to the point where my casual-fan, non-feminist male friends are noticing this shit.

I think anyone who thinks Jon would make any of his siblings his bitches (including Sansa) has no idea of how his character actually works. I do think he's destined for something great in the books (that, or death -- or both!) but I think anyone who says "yea, and then Sansa will be sorry!" is just being petty themselves.

That said, Sansa is my favorite Stark, and I don't understand why everyone hates her so much. She's, what, eleven?

Re: 133

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Hate Sansa? What fandom are you in? Everyone I've met is practically in love with her, and I have no idea what inspired such devotion. (I don't hate her either, but she's just not very interesting to me at this point.)

As someone with a video game tattoo (that I would really, really like to turn into a sleeve of all of the games I love), it'd be hard for me to criticize here.

But...I think the location in a little weird. And the design could have been done better. ...and the coloring and linework are a bit shaky. I hope they plan on getting it touched up, as it could look really fucking awesome if the colors popped a little more, imo.

Still, not a reason to hate the fandom. It happens everywhere.

I wanted to apoligize for the way I worded my fandom secret.

No, I'm not sorry for disliking those things, and I know a lot of people will hate me no matter what I say because of that. However, the "pure" comment at the end was rude and elitist sounding. It made me sound like I think I'm better than other people for not liking those things, and I don't think I am nor do I want to think I am. I'm not a troll, rather somebody who wanted to express an opinion that in public they'd get hammered for, like everybody else here. But the way I said it was rude, and I apoligize for that.
