Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

Why or why not?

Generally, yes. But I like it more when the ship is left in the hands of competent writers... *still glaring in D&D's direction*

Re: Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-07 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It rarely happens in my case but it hugely depends on how it's done. There certainly are cases where I would have preferred something to remain non-canon because it was just badly executed.
What happens though is that I don't read fanfic anymore when a ship is canon (at least not of the kind that is mainly focused on the romance part).

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-09-07 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends. If it is done well, fine. But I've seen ships I like become ruined and then I no longer ship them (House/Cuddy and Bones/Booth for example). On the other hand, I think Castle did a decent job for the most part of making Castle/Beckett canon.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cool when it's done well and when it's not done well I can just ignore it. So. Eh. I will say there's nothing quite exactly like the feeling when two characters you wanted to get together, but didn't dare hope would get together, actually do get together, it really is great.

They pretty much never do, so....i can't say. The only m/f 'ships I like, i like them because they *are* canon, so.....

Mostly yes. There are perhaps one or two cases where I didn't like what the canon did with the ships, but otherwise I love seeing my fave couples being actual canon in-love. I just think it's neat.

Also I generally am pretty easy to hoik with canon ships, so long as it feels like both characters actually like one another I will be there cheering them on.

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2019-09-07 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It very much depends on the ship. If I would be *surprised* by my ship becoming canon it’s even more complicated because it can rarely happen in the way I’ve built it up in my mind...but I’m open to being pleasantly surprised.

Re: Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Short answer: Yes, but.

Long answer: My ideal shipping scenario is a TV pairing where you have absolutely no idea if you're even meant to ship it for the first couple of seasons - you just want to because they're dynamic is compelling. Then, the narrative slowly gives you indicators that, yes, they definitely do have non-platonic feelings for each other. But It's Complicated, and they're definitely not prepared to act on it. So then they're just completely in love with each other but acting like it's not a thing for several seasons.

And then eventually, probably in the final season, they get together. But it's subtle and doesn't really change that much about the story. They were always 100% all-in about each other, it's just now they have the certainty that it's reciprocal. Plus now they have sex.

Re: Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I probably wouldn't. But my ships don't even happen in fandom, let alone canon so I'll never know.

Re: Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
No. I tend to ship the fucked-up or abusive pairings because I love angst, but if that happened in canon I'd feel so bad for the characters!

Re: Inspired by 1 - Do you like it when your ships become canon?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-08 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have enough examples to judge (especially if we only count hard core shipping couples before they were canon and not just sorta-shipping of couples who were clearly going that way in canon, anyway). In retrospect, Mulder/Scully becoming canon wasn't that satisfying after all, but by that point I was just so overjoyed that it happened that I didn't care whether it matched what I had imagined or whether it could have been done better.

Gomez & Morticia, Addams Family. At least the early 90s movies. Those people fuck. They are crazy into each other after however many years it is they've been together. I wouldn't mind having a relationship like that.

I should probably mention Ron & Desiree Delite from Ace Attorney as well *points to avatar*. He's meek, she's bold, but somehow they work. She appreciates the fact that he's willing to try, despite the fact it takes a lot out of him emotionally. And he's willing to do some crazy things just to make her happy. They're very forgiving of each other too.

I just finished Freedom and Necessity by Emma Bull and Steve Brust and James/Susan and Richard/Kitty are both excellent pairings.

Galadriel/Celeborn. I love that she chose him in spite of her family's dislike. I like how long lasting their romance was and how strong their bond was. And they go through a lot together.

Luthien/Beren. I think they are great, and I also find it adorable that Tolkien based them on himself and his wife.

Elrond/Celebrian. Elrond is a favorite character, and I love a good tragic romance.

Feanor/Nerdanel. Feanor was terrible. But I still like him and Nerdanel. Mostly because she's awesome. And because she'd have had to be a strong woman to put up with him.

Juliet Fiamatta Ars di Capulet and Romeo Candore di Montague, just to make the point that I'm talking about the anime and not any pre- or post-Shakespearean versions about melodramatic suicide.

As a love story, it's pretty straightforward love-at-first-sight-teenage-romance-oh-no-we-can't-be-together. What makes it, for me, are the personalities of the two involves, and how the reason they can't be together keeps evolving from "he's rich and I'm disguised as a boy" to "my dad killed your dad" and then it's "I'm leading a rebellion against your tyrannical father" and then one is an outlaw and then both are somehow, and it peaks with them separately deciding to go separate ways because his presence will be a detriment to her making a better world (thinks he)/because she'll have to die to save the world (thinks she), because they're both so noble. I fully admit that my love of that couple is 80% my love of the two involved, and how very little time the story has for being cute because it's also like fantasy Les Mis.

For a completely different one: Shuichi Shindo and Eiri Yuki from Gravitation, because they're both terrible at having a relationship and that's really funny, and occasionally also very sweet. But mostly funny.

Very old school, but Pride and Prejudice, Darcy/Elizabeth. They were both wrong and both right, Elizabeth Bennett has some of the best lines in literature and for me the journey to their romance and wedding is so satisfying I don't necessarily feel the need to see their married life... which is just as well, because most of the published sequels are just awful.

Okay, this is barely a fandom, but Miss Pettigrew/Joe Bloomfield from Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day is probably my favourite romance I've ever seen in a movie. Just because it's really really sweet and adorable. In the middle of all the dazzle and drama of everyone else in the movie, and the looming spectre of WWII, these two gentle, battered older characters build a sweet, honest connection to each other, and it's just lovely. She pays him the first honest compliment he's gotten in years, they share their losses from the last war, and when he finds her at the end of the movie it's the single happiest I've ever been watching a romance.

Let's talk about our fandom memories from yesteryear.

In this thread you can talk about anything fandom-related; fic, wank, meta/discussion, con-memories.

Only rule is that the topic you choose MUST be at least ten years old.
