Well, I've never dabbled into it yet but now I'm going to + do a crossover with humanized Madagascar too.

SA

Anyway, my point is not that they aren't African, it's that Hollywood and their cast of predominantly white voice actors in main roles didn't do a very good job getting that across

I’ve seen plausible redemption fics for a few villains who showed no signs of redemption in canon. And if all else fails, there’s the possibility of an AU where the villain avoids making the choice that corrupted them in canon.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They very much do.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That there are white Africans does not change the obvious fact that most Africans aren't white.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course he does, but that's not really my point. I don't think that basing human versions of characters on the ethnicity of the voice actors playing them is some kind of obvious, inarguable, common-sense, inevitable decision that the fandom was always going to choose to go with. To me, if I was thinking about what a human version of the characters in Lion King would look like, I would start from the fact that the characters are African, not by drawing a picture of fucking Matthew Broderick.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, this confuses me, are you agreeing with people who say to write your own or disagreeing with them

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What if they lived in a monoracial country and literally don't know any black person?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, when I visualize Po as a human for example, I think of Jack Black. Young Simba to me is young JTT because that's the voice I associate it with. Maybe I'm showing my age, but his voice was very recognizable at the time.

I also have a hard time imagining someone that looks like me, sounding like them, so that's part of it.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
OP explain plz.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just so happy to see a Eurovision secret in fucking November

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I can absolutely see someone drawing Simba white. The voice actors are white, JTT's voice is distinctive enough that if you've seen him in literally anything else you can't get his face out of your head when he speaks, and Simba's mane as an adult is red.

Also, I have a hard time giving a crap what color someone wants to make the cartoon animal they're drawing be as a human.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And were also unaware of the existence of Africans in general?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't even have to name names to tell me you're talking about Kylo Ren, and I love it.

Been there, done that for a previous fandom and I'll do it again. But what if in a newer fandom I want other people to write fics for tastes than different mine--for the sake of diversity?

Distinctive voices

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What actors or actresses' voices can you immediately recognize, no matter what cartoon cover they're in?

Which ones are you surprised by every time?

I'm in a different ballpark I guess. I absolutely love villains who have something about them that lends itself to a path to redemption. And I can see why that might be easier in terms of attraction.

But personally I've also not had an issue with enjoying the irredeemable shitheads.

My problem comes in that now it feels like we're at a point where even the irredeemable shitheads require a dark and tragic backstory to make them more palatable. This is despite years of even KIDS being able to find a villain cool and leaving it at that. By this point, I just want it to stop.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
So? They're literally lions, not humans. They aren't closer to any one race at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this Fenris? I don't remember him having an undercut.

Good point. The MCU is extremely guilty of forgetting its own established rules even in the same movie because they want a certain plot point or aspect of character development to be possible.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But they are from France.

Re: Distinctive voices

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The guy who dubs Dr Greene's voice in the French version of ER and also does Rizel in LastMan--the latter was so unsettling to hear because of the former.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this in my soul.

I do write what I want to read, because I'm the only one who does. I'm cool with that, I love writing it and I love shamelessly feeding my own id. But it'd still be nice, just once, to read something that I didn't write myself and thus know every word by rote before I ever click on it.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-09 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Worst example. Snape reminds me of that tweet 'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party. Or that woman who voted for Trump because she thought he would get rid of the bad Mexicans and her husband got deported.

"Writing" and "reading" scratch different itches. It's not rocket science. The "write your own!" crew are being deliberately dense.
