I know jack shit about GL, but if the whole show revolves around a pairing so much that everything is intricately tied to it and changing that one little thing would make everyone OOC...that doesn't sound very appealing. In fact, it makes it sound really shallow compared to all the endless praise I hear about the damn series.

Other people have said this already, but your significant other (soulmate, true love, whatever you want to call it) doesn't define your personality. It doesn't MATTER if them being together changed them - it is still very possible to write fic that has them not together. In fact, someone could write fic that involved them breaking up (not sure how off the top of my head, but then, I'm not a huge GL fan) and if done right, it could be perfectly in character.

I have a pairing I adore, one that I love so much I can't read a fic if they're paired with other people. That's not how it plays out in my head. That's not how I see them. Doesn't mean any fic like that is automatically OOC, though.

Wouldn’t that fall under the realm of metafiction and personal interpretation? I mean, the OCC-ness if a character is a completely subjective idea. What defines the character, to us as spectators, if not its interactions with other characters?

Okay, there's something to this that I just don't get. Maybe it's because I've never seen the canon, but the attitude in this isn't specific to any canon or couple, as far as I've seen, and I've come across it before.

I get that they're a canon couple. That's great. That's awesome. I get that if something is set in canon, at or after the point where that couple becomes canon, fic ought to acknowledge it, or it because either AU or OOC depending on how it's handled. I also think it's pretty tacky to break up a canon pairing by saying that they never really worked, or bastardizing one or both of the characters involved.

But why is it 100% OOC if they aren't a couple? Is their relationship 100% of their characterization? Is it absolutely impossible that they were a couple, and now they aren't, no matter how perfect they were for each other at one time? Are other pairings so totally and completely unbelievable because clearly having loved someone once, the people involved can never ever move on, not due to death, or character development, or irreconcilable differences (which are not solved by love, unfortunately), or irreconcilable similarities (also not always solved by love) which could lead to other pairings, you know, existing.

I'm not saying you should like them, and I'm not saying you're not entitled to your opinion, and you seem perfectly respectful in general. But I just do not get this attitude. It is possible to love more than one person, deeply and romantically, even life changingly, in one life time.

I think it's mostly that one of the characters involved, Simon, was extremely introverted. At the end of the show the other character involved, Nia, dies. What does the writer does at that point? He makes him leave the city and everyone in the cast behind, because even if he truly appreciates his friends he doesn't really want to be with them… they're just not his type. Then a time-skip to 20 years later and no-one in the cast knows where he is, he has cut all contact with them. Then again he appears at the end still by himself and the grave of the death character still has fresh flowers in it.

132. I think the dub is fabulous! Caitlin Glass is perfect as Haruhi, and that's really all that I was concerned about, because Haruhi is heard a lot throughout the anime, so if her voice actor sucked then the show would've been ruined. But she's phenomenal, and everyone else is great. Especially Luci, her Hunny is wonderful.

The problem is that the yaoi/yuri people so often don't want any het, and there are het people that don't want any yaoi/yuri, and anyway in order to write about more than one ship you have to have more than two characters in a story and the fangirls don't like that much anyway. But I like writing ensemble casts, and I really like having one het, one boyslash and one girlslash as my pairings.

131 Write it and they will come, seriously. Make friends in the fandom and they might write it in the background of their fics, esp if it's a minor character ship rather than an alt ship for a major character. Fandom secrets proves to me every day that there's always an audience, even if it's small. And my experiences in idolslash and HP showed me that if you're in a smaller ship, then the people who want it REALLY WANT IT OMG and they'll be great with the feedback, etc, and you can feel like you have this really fun little club all your own. No, it's not the path to bnf-dom, or having 3 pages of comments on your fic, but it has its own rewards.

What makes the character become OOC? What makes the character remain the character? Fanfiction in general is an idea that defies the concept of canon as writers can’t help to insert pieces of themselves in their work. They’re writing personal interpretations of the character's personality. The writer/director can easily add new pieces of canon, be it through the novels or the manga or the movies, that contradict even the “most IC” fanfiction and wouldn’t matter since fanfiction was always a type of creative essay rather than an actual addendum to the storytelling.
