Some people are just skinny however much they eat, just like some people are fat however much they don't. Unrealistic standards of beauty are a bad thing, but it's holding everyone to the same standard in itself that's damaging, not which specific standard you're using – picking a different standard won't solve anything.

I'm 16 years old and 95 pounds. I haven't been able to reach the 100 lb mark- the closest I've come is 98. I eat normally, and hell yes I enjoy my sweets, but- I just don't gain weight.

While I can see the arguments against the secret, Gurren Lagann's a bit of a special case when it comes to how it treats that particular ship...each character in the pairing has a large part of their personality shaped by the other. So it's a bit more complicated than "the only thing that matters about someone's personality is how they act in a single romantic relationship."

You could do an AU where they never met, or an AU where their relationship is platonic, or an AU where there's someone else involved in the relationship, but their personalities would be at least slightly different, which is technically OOC, although when done well that's half the point of such AUs.
