Pretty much no one thinks that it's a "real news show". However, TDS is very much a "speak truth to power" show. I can read the New York Times and learn the facts, but Stewart et al will point out hypocrisy, double standards, and just plain fucked-up-ness in a way that will will both leave me laughing and often give me a broader context for the facts (see re: clipshows of people contradicting themselves).

And as some other people have said, maybe you find him smug, but smart and eloquent =/= smug.

You want smug, try watching Keith Olbermann.

132. OH MY GOD, ANON. I think we are actually the same person!

I just started playing the MGS series. I just finished Twin Snakes, I just picked up MGS2 tonight two hours ago, and I plan to play MGS3 right after and since I don't have a PS3, I'll be watching Lets Plays of the series.

I also love Otacon, particularly the really interesting, complex relationship he has with Snake. But Otacon wins everything.

And one of my motivations for finally breaking down and picking up the MGS series is that I spent two years out of gaming, am now filled with rage about how I am treated in online gaming communities because OMG OMG I HAVE A VAGINA AND I PLAY GAMES WUT, so I wanna familiarize myself with all the top series. Half-Life is next on my list.

In conclusion: ARE YOU ME, ANON?

138

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm hmm, what you said. Good god, that movie was a turd. I loved the way Jensen looked as Priestly, and I think he did the best he could with the script he was given, but dayum, the 'message' of the movie sucked.

I really don't think it was actually the director that was leaving those anon comments about not downloading. Until he says something about it on the official site, I ain't buyin' that it was really him.

The reactions to here illustrate exactly why I don't tell anyone about my dislike for Stewart.

I don't find him smug because he's smart and eloquent. I readily admit that he'd smart and eloquent. That has no bearing on the fact that he's smug. Intelligent people can have character flaws entirely apart from their intelligence. I find his self-effacement gratingly fake. I think the influence of his show has gone to his head.

I am also not a homophobic, abortion-hating, ultra-right Republican just because I don't like Stewart. I think Obama's victory is the best thing that's happened to the US in a long time.

I can't speak to what the rest of the world likes to watch. All I said was that I find him smug, self-satisfied, and off-putting. I have the right to be rubbed the wrong way! Shocking, I know.

Failing to enjoy the darling of college-age Democrats doesn't make me an uneducated idiot or a closet bigot, and the fact that people feel compelled to lob those accusations at anyone with different taste from theirs is pretty disheartening. Liberals are supposed to stand for diversity; or at least the liberals that I associate with do.

Stewart does, to his credit, say that his show isn't real news. But that doesn't stop a whole lot of morons from saying they "get their news from the Daily Show."

you're crazy. you cannot like him, or even strongly dislike him, but disliking him for presenting himself as the news is totally unjustified, mainly because he doesn't at all. he's a comedian, and he's just doing what he's done for years - presenting a light-hearted satirical view on the news aimed at entertaining rather than informing. if people turn to his show for the news, that only reflects on the sad state of media in america, rather than on him and the daily show.

OP of 101 here

(Anonymous) 2008-11-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Please read my secret more carefully before you come out with a knee-jerk reaction. I didn't say I disliked him for "presenting himself as the news". I didn't say anything alleging that he is "presenting himself as the news." I said that I disliked it when people take his show as the news, which sadly does happen more often that you'd like to think.

124. I agree that it isn't the best AMV ever, but it has a balanced composition for the most part. And the editing was great.

134. ...!!! I ♥ that movie! The part where they have to run away because of the poison gas still gives me goosebumps.

119

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's nice. But that's not Yu-Gi-Oh, it may have it's name, but it ain't it. Takahashi did not conceive of 5Ds, there is no Pharaoh or King of Games in it. I never even watched Yu-Gi-Oh for the crack or the gayness or the creepy pedos or whatever. I didn't even watch it for the card games, I watched it for the characters... I can't like those characters, they're too... let's just say Yugi's hair looks NORMAL compared to anything in 5Ds.

Re: 119

[identity profile] torakaka.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
But Kaz did put a lot into the planning of 5D's. Unlike GX, he was actually in on it. And personally that's why it is so much better than GX came out to be.

I'm just so annoyed that to like them you have to be a tween. ): Older people can like them too.

No need to be ashamed~ :D

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
101) Yeah, it's a hard show to watch if you are a Republican. Personally, I can't see how people can watch Hannity and think they are getting the truth -- at least Stewart isn't trying to pass himself off as real news.

109) This is exactly why Real Life and Fantasy should never mix. I like my Real life boring, predictable and safe, and my fantasy fucked up and exciting.

123) It really can ruin your teeth and permanently uglify your face. I hope you don't do it very often.

136) If it isn't fun... yeah. It's really hard to give something up that drives you nuts, but you still get something out of. I wish you luck finding other avenues for socializing.

142) Seriously -- like anyone can tell which secrets are done by the same person. Trust in your anonymity. Unless you are going to write a secret that is so specific it gives you away, and then no amount of fake secrets will keep you from being outed.

101. I totally agree. (I've also found that it's incredibly frustrating trying to explain to my friends why I like Colbert better.)

140. I'm only a year or so older and I still feel like a creeper. He's just so cute! (And good actor to boot, I expect a serious career for this kid.)

104. I dunno. I don't hate the game, but I'll admit I actually cried when I found out about Phoenix. (Though, I have to admit Hobo Phoenix is like the hottest thing ever. Though that totally doesn't excuse what happened to him.)

145. God, I agree so hard. I just got into this fandom a few months ago, seemed pretty cool with some awesome people. But then suddenly started noticing the elitism and idiots. And that particular person who made that post, especially irks me. D: But I do like the manga enough to stick with it for now.

127

Haha, me too.

My theory: Laurie knows but doesn't acknowledge it for the the sake of their friendship.

...Or they're secretly screwing and Fry is doing a terrible job at hiding his affections.

Re: 129

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's my theory, too (errr...your first theory :) ). I once read about an interview with the two of them circa Jeeves and Wooster in which Stephen said that he didn't just like Hugh, he loved him, and he fairly shouted it. He was kind of joking around in the context, but...come on, you just know there had to be some truth to that. Even if he meant only the most chaste and fraternal kind of love, there is serious vehemence to his feelings.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
101. I disagree. The guy is trying to emulate how pundits and newscasters are. Honestly, I find it a great way to unwind from all the bullshit from the news and politics. It's pretty funny to me, I guess, because it's like a commentary to all the current events in a way that relates with the viewer. But you have to admit that when he uses sound bites to out some politician's flip-flopping, it's hilarious and sad at the same time. But TDS and CR should be only watched if you keep up with current events from real news sources. Like a desert after a meal, if you will.

115. For some odd reason, I knew the reverse trap was a reverse trap moments after her introduction for some odd reason. Note that I knew nothing of the series then.

119. I keep on saying that I have to watch it but I keep on forgetting. Grr.

141. Low number of plays is low but whoa all the same artist though... Although I prolly have at least 2 KOTOKO songs on my top 10 list and maybe 4 Susumu Hirasawa in my top 20.

145. I need someone to tell me why the anime ending cause such a shit fest. Im my view, Yoite was going to die either way and he died being contented in the anime. Hell, the only reason I'm pissed with the anime is that they killed off Raikou, whut? But I found that post pretty damn petty though. I mean, LOL opinions, am I right?

[identity profile] kisarazumama.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
re: 145: That's what baffles me too! I mean, everyone knew Yoite had no chance, so why are they so ticked off? because everyone was all resigned to it and spent his last days trying to make him comfortable and happy, instead of it happening suddenly? Is it just too sentimental and neat for them? Self, I just can't see where that's a bad thing. There's always some messiness when an ongoing manga has to be fitted into a 26-episode series, and I acknowledge there's a lot of missing drama/angst, but I personally thought they came up with a nice solution that didn't cheat and was touching and satisfying.
IMHO, anyway.

I know right? I didn't even like her than much when she was on the show. I was sort of excited when I found out she wasn't coming back because I thought we might get a better actress. But now I miss her so much it hurts sometimes.

138

[identity profile] san-toki.livejournal.com 2008-11-07 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. The movie was pretty cliche and heteronormative. I definitely am against Priestly changing who he was for that shallow girl.

I really was expecting more. Oh well, Jensen as Priestly sans makeover was super hot to me. :/
