LOL I have never ever seen it. But I remember it...

I was just a kid the first time I saw it in the video store. It had a funny cover, and the writeup on the back made it sound like a helluva funny movie. But for some reason, my Mum would never let me rent it. XD

She asked me one time (because I nagged her about it every time we went in) if I knew what a whorehouse was, I do remember that. I replied that I was pretty sure it was some kind of warehouse. XD I think at that point she might have given me an edited version of what a brothel really is, because so far as I remember I kind of lost interest in renting it, and finally agreed with her that it probably wasn't suitable for someone as young as me.

To this day, though, I keep meaning to go back and find the damned thing and finally watch it, just to see if it really is as funny as the back of the box made it sound.

Besides, Mum can't stop me now. XD Plus I know what a whorehouse is for real and everything. ;-)

you're one of the people who actually "gets" the intelligence factor about death note. ohba admitted he was just makin' shit up, like L's percentage rates. the series really exaggerates how everything is JUST AS PLANNED LOL for light. realism for the series doesn't set in until the end when someone finally fucks up, which makes it worth reading/seeing because light was so fucking perfect that the whole drive to reading the series is to see if he fucks up in the end or not. otherwise it's just "anything you can do I can do better" and "just as planned" for 106 chapters. lol

shit I fucking love me some death notes, I think it's one of the better animes/mangas out there, but even I struggled to finish reading it.

Tangent -- your icon is adorable.

119. That's what happened when I watched the Rescuers as an adult. I pretty much think that anything made by Disney prior to the Little Mermaid is not all that great, unless you're a small child.

120. The only person I would hit in the movie is James. Hot damn that boy is delicious. Probably the only reason I didn't fall asleep.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 07:42 am (UTC)(link)

101) I've actually thought about this a bit, and the conclusion I came up with is that the bland, weak, helpless female is perfect self-insert fantasy for some, because it gives the reader the illusion of getting everything she wants, drama, love, riches, adventure, without her having to make any sort of effort. It all just falls into her lap. But if she did show a shred of personality, she might actually do something the reader would find uncomfortable, embarrassing or just not to the reader's tastes. So there she sits, like a lump, being adored just cuz.

105) Yeah. Lack of interest failed my community, too. But you just can't force people to participate. I'd say let it go.

118) She's one of us! And of course I wish I could be one of her.

134) Well yeah, that's a drawing. In drawings everyone looks young, rediculously thin without being bony, boobs float, and cross dressing guys are indistinguishable from women. It's insane to expect RL to imitate anime.

157) Well, you know, it would sure help if instead of explaining how much you tollerate blacks in other roles, you gave some indication why you didn't want a black in that one. Is there a reason a pastier flesh-tone would have made a positive difference to the character?

108, 149, And all other Twilight secrets) Ya know, sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who can dislike these books, but not be OMG outraged by their popularity. They weren't outrageously horrible. Merely boring, unless you are one of those people who find it easy to substitute yourself in for the protagonist in a novel.

Dear OP,

Firstly, I empathise entirely. It is completely ridiculous and unfair and nonsensical. That is why I come bearing a couple of suggestions, and definitely welcome any from you. :3

Have you ever read Howl's Moving Castle? It's my favourite book of all time, and I think a great deal of that comes from the fact that its heroine is Sophie Hatter, who is a lot like me, and very much many of those things that you have described. She does spend a lot of the book grappling with what she sees as her doom as the first-born, but she is extremely headstrong regardless, and comes into her own at the end (of course, because it's a fairy tale and that's what happens). I think you might like it because while there is some obvious romance, the heroine is not your conventional D.I.D.

P.S. The Last Unicorn also deals with strong women (Molly Grue is a character I've admired ever since I was very small and watched the animation), though the heroine, the Unicorn herself, does have a bit of the D.I.D. syndrome. Molly does quite a lot to compensate, though.

And to the OP of 163: Yes, you and, like, half of the fandom. XD; Me? I'm all for Ryouhei.

Re: 1, 163

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you for even mentioning the Last Unicorn.

The Unicorn had extenuating circumstances. And in the end, she was pretty fierce.

101. The reason women are portrayed like that in books is because women keep BUYING these books. I don't get it either but there you go. Then again, from reading the comments here, it doesn't sound like Elphaba is any kind of improvement at all so I guess you're as much a part of the problem as all the Bella wannabes out there. OH SNAP

141. I hate that phrase too. Especially since they're usually on some incredibly lame, mundane secret like "I suddenly found myself attracted to X fictional character".

150. I'm gonna have to call troll here. Because surely someone who reads so VEDDY VEDDY much would know the proper usage of "than" vs "then". And you don't, so yeah, gotta be a troll.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
101. This is now my favorite secret. Moreso that I'm trying to chug through a Wicked essay right now.

Also, this reminds me of the whole Saber/Shirou relationship in fate/stay. I mean, sure Shirou is trying to be a gentlemen, but its actually kind of sexist, the way he would flip out when Saber would fight, simply because he just thought it wasn't right for women to fight... despite Saber's purpose being all about fighting, as well as being a million times stronger than Shirou.

But, consider, Saber and Shirou did have a romantic relationship, and Saber never relied on Shirou or ever was weaker than him. I think she loved him most because he believed in her. More so, in the end (of the animu), she still chooses her duty over love.

MAN I LOVE SABER LOL

119. Lol, someone on my animu forums watched Outlaw Star again, a board favorite of ours. It... wasn't as good as he remembered.

121. fuck yeah revoltech

134. Agreed. I really think a director points at their character designer's cutest design and says "Hey, that one's a boy now." Also, I don't even like Pico's (and coco for that matter) design--I think they're guilty of the same thing as Jun. It's like, "Hey, instead of making Pico a loli futa, we'll just say she--er, he's a trap. Now we're being creative." Cool thing with Bridget is that you can actually kind of tell from the close-up images during story mode of some of his masculine features.

141. i hate TV Tropes

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
155. I think that I've read one Ryo/Shige fic. I don't really like either one of them, so I'm not exactly interested in reading about them together. Or Massu or Tegoshi. KoyaPi might be fun, though. Any recs?

158. I love those two.

163. Well, of course he is! Is that really a secret?

[identity profile] xbenji65.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 08:53 am (UTC)(link)

It may be wishful thinking, which is making me remain a cowardly anon, for now. I am not sure what I would say if it were you; it's been so long I don't know what we could possibly have in common anymore.

But it's worth a shot. Once upon a time, these were some of your favorite people:

101. I don't know. See, I agree with your point completely, but if you don't want to need a man to be happy, then...why do you need a man to be happy?

102. Poor Jared. D= He needs a Cherise.

140. You are Brienne of Tarth in reverse! Only, I'm guessing, more attractive. If it really bothers you, perhaps you could try doing something uncomplicated but feminine with your hair?

157. Is it just one of those "he doesn't fit my image and I can't stand it even thought it's irrational" things, or what? Because if it's not just an internalized fanwank issue, it does seem kind of racist.

109. Did you play Silent Hill 4? James's father mentions that his son and daughter-in-law went to Silent Hill and never returned. Just from that little comment, I damn near cried. In Water might not be canon, but I think the fact that he disappeared means Leave isn't true, and damnit, I really wanted it to be.

eeeeeeeeee! Monkees secret! There is a [livejournal.com profile] monkees_secrets community, by the way.

Were Davy and Mike ever friends? They don't seem like the type to have gotten on well with each other. Both a little too arrogant, maybe, and Davy was convinced he was the star of the show while Mike wanted to control everything.

105| I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A HEROES KINK MEME FOR A LONG FUCKING TIME. ONE MORE WRITER COMING UP.
139| This season owns my life right now, and the lives of quite a few people I know IRL. I don't understand how it is in danger of cancellation. Literally everyone I talk to on a regular basis watches this show.

165. You're not alone. And I don't mean that light-heartedly. I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. It's fucking scary and embarrassing. Good luck, to both of us. My current favourite character is suicidal.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
101. Because (after gaining so many rights) we still have a very skewed idea of what makes for masculinity or femininity. *sigh* The problem is that characters like Bella are a symptom, not a cause. We see them, and it's really easy to think that they're teaching people that it's okay to be that way. But if the stereotype weren't already considered acceptable and desirable, then Bella would have never passed muster. The stereotype is made strong because society views it as a positive, but it also makes that view stronger too. Vicious cycle, and you can't break it by going after Bella. Lots of small fry are always harder and more ineffective to battle than the giant stationary target that is popular opinion.

One of my favorite (current, because I collect favorites like pockets collect lint) heroines is Maya from Serpent's Shadow (by Mercedes Lackey, part of her Elemental Mages series). She's a suffragist, a female doctor and she fights for what she wants and believes in. Of course, she ends up being the Damsel simply by virtue of it being based vaguely off of Snow White (I think), and since Maya is Snow White she ends up in trouble. But she fights the whole way. She rocks.

In general, I think Mercedes Lackey wins for female characters. :x Which is a nice way to off-set Anne McCaffrey's fail. *sigh*

106. Hm. What was that one secret? "My care is not a zero-sum game"? I can do lots of things and still have plenty of time for fandom. This is how I relax, and if I didn't take time to relax then I'd be less capable of doing other things. Got it memorized?

108. Not a crime. (pets)

111. LOL And probably be told "OMG THAT'S SO OOC!"

113. Gods, he's pretty. Just... INSANELY PRETTY.

117. .... ._. Okay, you had me as semi-understanding until that last bit. I think your priorities are skewed.

118. OMG I LOVE THOSE BOOKS. AND I DID NOT KNOW SHE WROTE GENDERBENDER SLASH OMG OMG OMG *SQUEEEEE*

119. Um. Sleeping Beauty makes perfect sense? o.O I haven't seen Land Before Time in fifteen years, so I'd have to get back to you there, but...

Well, I guess your tastes have changed?

120. (pats) If you say so.

121. WIN. XD Though again, honesty. Best policy. &c.

124. I always wonder about people who let others ruin something for them. It just seems like a silly reason to decide your action and/or tastes.

131. CAPTION WIN. Besides, I read the long ones if they look interesting. So :P I am no one.

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2008-12-03 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
In general, I think Mercedes Lackey wins for female characters.

What Lackey can't do with story telling, she does with characterization. I'm not always a huge fan of her actual writing, but her characters always keep me engaged.

With the exception of Myste. Myste smacks of Mary Sue-dom.

Which is a nice way to off-set Anne McCaffrey's fail. *sigh*

Oh Annie Mac. I love the Dragonriders to death, but yeah. Just... yeah.

134. ._. Um. You know, that's a lot of anger over what amounts to lazy designers? And in the shoujo style like that, I can't imagine it being easy to draw a real trap. Seriously. Even male/female eyes tend to look different.

<3333 LARSA. (squishes and cuddles him)

Thank goodness I read the comments or I would have missed the WTF moment. Larsa? LARSA? (squints) LARSA IS NOT A TRAP. He's 12. He's an adorable 12. (Although I was considering doing something where Larsa's like "his brother? I'm his sister! :D *sparklesparkle* DO NOT TEMPT ME ANON I WILL DO IT TOO) At that age, gender is pretty much optional. Much like dwarves on the Disc.

137. I dunno. I think a couple of brain cells to rub together makes a guy kind of hotter.

140. (hugs) If it makes you feel better, I get called "sir" sometimes, and I have butt-length hair, an obvious bust except under heavy clothes and there's no hiding my hips (I've tried). So... people are dumb.

141. Because they're tropes. Tropes get worn out. That's how Dead Horse Tropes come into being.

149. (facepalm) Just saying, being an ass in secret is still being an ass. I don't even like/hate Twilight, and this annoys me. I call troll.

150, meet 118. I hope you two have a lovely relationship.

157. Was he originally white? Because I can see being annoyed about a character-change. (Gods know I've been screaming "BUT HARRY'S EYES ARE GREEN!" for years.) But you didn't mind the change before... (is confused)

NM. Read comments. Now I'm just confused.

162. Aww. :\ Sometimes it's fun to rework old stuff like that. I hope you find it!

165. ._.

167. (facepalm) For the love of all that's holy, DON'T. If you need a reason besides "IT'S SUICIDAL", think of it this way: you lose more in inches by eating right and exercise than pounds, but if you starve yourself you lose pounds faster than inches. Your body retains more fluid and will stop burning calories. Not a doc, but I know someone who crash dieted so much that now she has problems holding a healthy weight at all. So if you want to slim down, eating right and exercise are the best ways. Calorie counting is your friend. Fresh fruits and veggies aplenty.

Also. Doctor. Yes, I saw that "what my parents would think" reply, but what would they think if you pass out from starvation and end up in the hospital? Approach it this way: "Mom, Dad, I think I need to get more fit. I want to see a doctor about doing that safely." Then tell the doctor about your problems in private—chances are the doctor will help you get back to healthy eating habits. Anything to get help, right?

More important, find friends who will support you as you are. That's some good medicine there.

Since this seems to be the most controversial secret, I took the liberty of attempting to analyze it. This is my first attempt at doing so on a secret, so High School Psychology 1 and 2, please don't fail me now.
First things first, he states "When he was a kid" Kids exaggerate things, and I'm sure he's way past over it now. This is obvious since he still likes Spawn and wants to get into it again.
Also, he probably didn't actually read the comics or even see the movie, considering both reveal him to be a black man. I'm assuming he just idolized him from afar, and didn't actually KNOW much about his origin. I remember that movie coming out, and my parents wouldn't let me see it, so I'm guessing his parents didn't want him near that stuff, either.
Next, he states how he had/hopefully still has no problem with black people in general. His examples are interesting in particular because with names like Will, MJ, and Left-Eye, you'd think he associated blacks with common stereotypes. But then Urkel comes up along with him saying he has no problem with black goths or metal heads, so that's not an issue.
It seems he's distressed more by the fact that people rammed him for even thinking of thinking that, and no matter how hard he tried to explain, his peers wouldn't give him a word in edgewise.
I remember when TDK came out, and even though I had liked Heath's Joker, I thought there were better suitors for the role, but everyone thought I was being disrespectful to him because he was dead. I tried saying that was not the case, but people went on about how he had depression and this that and the other (this happens alot when I see people say they don't like Nirvana). For a moment, I actually felt like I had to mentally apologize to Heath Ledger for not thinking he should've been the Joker. I still like the movie, though. And I still appreciate Heath's preformance as being nothing short of tremendous. But I still look at him and think to myself, "You caused alot of drama for me, you know."

tl;dr, OP clearly states that he's over it and probably over-exagerated back then like most kids do, but feels bad because everyone told him to feel bad and he doesn't know why.
