The problem is that to you, the colour of his skin matters. It doesn't matter that this hasn't happened to you in regards of anything else, you are raising an objection towards his character (an objection you didn't have before you found out) simply because of the colour of his skin, nothing else. And that does count as being racist. Not skinhead-gotta-lynch-some-blacks racist, but still racist.

[identity profile] candlejack.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
101. Couldn't have worded it better.
106. LMFAO, HELL, YEAH!
111. Sometimes I think the authors really do that.
117. Wow, I sure hope I get a friend like you someday. :D
119. Oooh, you sad dinky person. :( How can you think those are lame? You have to see it through the eyes of the public target, silly.
132. SCREAM-O-VISION. Scream.
150. It's sad how most people don't read for pleasure any more. :\ If I'm not with a friend, I always read a book on my way to college and from it to home. I wish I saw more people reading, too. Also, thank you for the recommendation, I shall look into it.
152. A lot of popular series are crap making you think that it's not crap.
167. Starving yourself is actually the worse move, because your body begins to think it shouldn't burn as many calories and so it stops burning fat and starts burning energy and other shit you actually need. It's faster if you work out and eat healthily.

167

(Anonymous) 2008-12-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried all that... but it wasn't working.
And I know it's not good for you, but I always thought I'd be able to control how much I didn't eat. But now I can't stop, and I'm not old enough to be able to go see nutritionists or anything without my parent's permission. And if they knew... I don't know how I'd take it.

131. LOL to the text under this one.

106) For your information I like Comic Book Guy, and don't mind sounding like him one bit

110) Word. I mean, Billie and David do look cute together and are obviously good mates, but they don't have the onscreen chemistry that Billie and Chris did (oddly David's Doctor always seems to have better chemistry with older women - Sarah Jane, Donna...)

114) Yeah, Mark Gatiss is hot, especially as a blond and even more so as an evil blond

150) Finding it slightly amusing that the book you want people to read is also written by a (presumably unrelated) Myer

158) This made me a bit sad - I miss my Ted too

160) OMG Elton! Yeah, now you've mentioned it I kinda wish he'd got to be a companion too (and not just because I think we're overdue for a long term male companion or because Marc Warren is love)

Agreed. It gets rather boring being a fan of something if there's nothing left to discuss about the canon, even if it's something that's been discussed or argued to death already.

tbh, I don't really see any ships, besides those that are implied to be canon (Zoe/Wash, Mal/Inara, and Simon/Kaylee). Okay, maybe I like to squint and pretend Simon/Inara is totally possible. That said, though...any ship from Firefly is hot as hell, and the porn can be done really well sometimes.

Why is always one way or another? Why do you have to be either a weak little girl or some pig headed stubborn feminist? Why isn't there a middle ground?

Yes, there are always going to be the weak "OMG I can't live without him!" female roles in any sort of entertainment. And there are always going to be the stubborn, independent "OMG HOW DARE A MAN HELP ME!!!" female roles.

You know why they exist? So that those who read them can look at the characters and say "Oh, I like what they did there, I could do something like that." or "Hey, that was stupid, I'll never do something like that."

These kinds of roles are here to help you learn, shape your personalities, and maybe grow a little. They have the same effect on us as our real life interactions have.

So, whining, bitching and groaning about the weak willed characters without looking at the flaws of the strong willed characters is a bit hypocritical, don't you think? Doesn't matter how they act, their actions always end up hurting someone no matter whether they are strong or weak.

Besides, just because you're a opinionated, passionate, stubborn, blunt, intelligent and confident young woman doesn't mean you'll be unhappy all you life. If you truly think that, you not really any of those things then. Because if you were, you wouln't have to complain to the anonymous masses of the internet. And you make the rest of us look bad.

120. RPattz intensely dislikes/hates the book, so I think that would reflect his acting, no? I mean, not that it would excuse him of it, but still. This reminds me, I still need to go watch it for a good laugh.

124. I know how you feel about excessive fantarding. I mean, I spazz out and ramble about my favorite things, too, but I stop when I notice the other person is being bored to death by it.

129. I was going to write a long explanation on how it wouldn't taste like a McDonalds burger, but then I realized I'd be rambling about Spongebob.

134. ...What? *squints*

151. South Park porn or just porn in general?

152. I think it could have been amazing, but the writing's a bit... shoddy.

163. I don't get it. 90% of the fandom finds him sexy.

117. Well, that's not cool.
131. I think they should have a like...font clarification, or something. Length doesn't matter as much as actually being able to see the words on the image...to me, at least.
139. Agreed. I'm done with it for now.

[identity profile] burningvigor.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
139. These past two episodes have been an improvement (other than the stupidness of the eclipse and the stilted writing and everything having to do with Sylar and Elle), but I'm still not sure that it's going to improve completely. There are still a lot of problems, and while I'd like for S4 to rock my world, I doubt it'll happen. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the final season, though.

153. Your dad must be frickin' awesome, then. 8D

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
106. Actually, I'll point out that just because people get really really into a fandom debate or whatever, or even if it seems like they're spending a lot of time in fandom (alot=more than you), it doesn't mean that's all they're doing. They're letting off some steam. In an hour or so, they're probably go have a cup of tea and do something else. No, really.

110. GASP! YOU DON'T SHIP THE DOCTOR/CASANDRA?!?
J/K.
Yeah, a lot of us feel that way. Nine and Rose just had this...thing. It was what drew me into the show when I first started watching, seeing only three minutes of interaction between them. Ten and Rose were alright, but if I'd started on them, I probably wouldn't've liked the relationship that much.

119. The Land Before Time? What, really? Sleeping Beauty I never really liked much, but TLBT is classic, and for a good reason. Lame/stupid? No wai!

126. Awww... Go watch the "Ordinary Day" video and the "Strange Cup od Tea" vids to feel better.

132. Lol. Who wouldn't?

133. *snerk* That gives me the most hilarious mental image now.

137. Awww...world needs more Frys!

145. I agree with this 100%. I mean, I'm not keen on any of those things for ships anyway, but sometimes I can see it as working.
In Firefly...no. The relationships feel so real. Simon and River are brother and sister, with the kind of love that entails. Book is a preacher-character I really respect for his struggles. And Wash and Zoe...Are Wash and Zoe. Full Stop. I couldn't even fantasize about adding Wash to the Fictional Men Harem because dangit, he loves Zoe.

I miss that show so much. (Oh, and..I do ship a handful ot those. Mostly the Jayne ones).

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
101. Problem is, I'm not even sure what people really see as a "strong female character". Often, when I ask around, the idea they seem to have is purely "a woman who acts like a stereotypical man", which is... not exactly the best, to put it kindly. And even female characters who *ARE* strong are often either: a) bashed and called "Mary Sue" or "bitch", b) bashed as soon as they show emotions and/or behaviors seen as "feminine" (hello, Code Geass fandom? Stop crapping on Kallen, plz).

I might have gone a bit off-rails, but yeah. TL;DR: I want female characters that are, well, *human*, with both weaknesses AND strengths.

101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Strong female character is a female character who is strongly written (i.e., as human, with weaknesses and strengths).

106. You need to get over yourself.

104. Oh my God. That... is HIGHLY logical, yeah. Agree. Wow.

108. We know. Twilight is horrible and addicting. Yes, we know, we know, we know. Can we please leave Twilight alone now? Please?

110. Yeah, I’m pretty much guilty of that too.

111. That would be amazing, especially when people started commenting on the unrealistic nature of the pairings you wrote for the characters you created.

Come to think of it, can I do this too, if I ever get published?

118. Are you serious? My jaw just dropped, you have NO idea how much! I... I love this secret! Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

142. True story, I got in trouble in fifth grade because, when asked to name three musicals I thought we should watch for our music class, I said the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, and the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

We ended up watching the Sound of Music.

Maybe you should ask yourself why you were devastated and work on becoming less racist instead of crying about it and saying "But I have black friends!"

110: Agreed. The Ninth Doctor is distinctly different (and better, imho) from Ten.

139: I am holding out hope for Fugitives to turn the season around... Kind of pissed off after last night, though.

153: Your dad is a scary man, then. xD

106. Comic book guy is kind of awesome, though. He's a big, fat dweeb, and he's fine with that. In fact, he is the biggest, fattest dweeb in town just because he wants to be. It's what he likes. I think that's admirable.

I think that fiction is worth thinking about. The authorial intent, as you say, is an important part of any work of art. Some people like to delve into what they see while others prefer to take it at face value. There's no harm in either.
