Word! I think threesomes (or more), can be a lot of fun, and there are some that I read -- but because all of the characters have sexual tension in canon. Friendship =/= sexual tension, and I actually think the dynamic between a couple and their mutual close friend can be just as, if not more, interesting as the dynamic between an OT3.

PS. I'm another voice for "It can happen IRL!" And as someone who was part of the couple, I promise my love for the platonic friend was just as strong as my love for my SO; it was also very different.
