I've been around enough brain-dead morons most of my life (family/close friends excluded) that the correct form sounds horrendously awkward even though I know it's correct. Worse, I sound pompous to myself. Most of the time I end up manipulating the text to accommodate "If I'd been" or "If I could be," just so I don't have to deal with the cognitive dissonance.

You know what really kills me? Punctuation outside quotation marks.

(in b4 "italicizing end punctuation isn't right either lololol hypocrite." blow me.)

Dear 168; you mean we're not supposed to? They seem so obvious. Perhaps that's my slashgoggles.

I think Kiel's comment about having a princess or two in her harem of princes was what sealed the deal. I don't think it's just slash goggles, those girls really care about each other.

103 - I won't read a fic with an OC main character period (with the exception of those that are used as villains or for parody/humor purposes). I don't mind background OC characters at all, however.

115 - ...they're annoying as fuck-all? They serve as replacements for canon characters that could do just as well, if not better? They're oh-so-special, the prettiest, bestest, friendliest, noblest, whathefuckevaest?

123 - I say you should speak up! For all you know, she just may have become a more craftier thief.

144 - I make that error all the time, which is probably why I can't bring myself to care if others do. Still, I'll probably be double-checking for it from now on in my own fics (comments and speech I give no fuck about, however).

158 - Writing something like that may very well get more people to join that fandom if it interests them. Why not do so?

115. Aeris/Aerith is not a Mary Sue.

121. There's nothing bad about that as long you know it's bad IRL, I have a couple of pairings like that too.

125. I don't have many OT3 (just six actually, and only two that are true OT3s). But I doubt a lot of people who do are like that though.

130. +

136. :D I find it half the fun figuring it out, in fact I used it in a secret a long while back. Although that bottom one doesn't work though.

144. Thank you for reminded me how utterly fuckretarded English is and why I love the language for it. I admit I forget sometimes too.

150. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
Anon, you are NOT alone. Hell, for some odd reason when Kiri was declaring that she was going out with Kanako to Ryuuken's fanbrats, I confused it with Ryuuken and I was like "HOLY SHIT FUCK YES!" until I realized she was talking about Kanako. I really need to stop watching anime at 4:30 AM in the morn. They would make a fantastic pairing!

155. I may be a much of a fan of Depp too much, but I call troll.

150. DO EET. I love metas.

160. I'm going to see this soon after reading an article about it on Elle and the premise sound so, SO interesting. Hell, just from that, I wish it would take the Oscar, seriously.

TooBig!Secret #2. This. I love Kallen but there was no indication that Lulu was interested in her in that way. Yeah, Lulu did treasure her as a close friend, despite that disaster in Turn 7 but he never really see her more than that. Honestly, the only person I could've seen Lulu hook up was Shirley and I'm not much of a Lulu/Shirley fan either. I think that could've sink that ship better though.

150? I meant 158? Also 120 + 130 = OTP!

154: BNFs are honestly never awesome as they seem. Sorry BNFs, it's true. :(

155:...Not really. Ever seen The Astronaut's Wife? Well, let's say some of the stuff his character says in that movie you wouldn't be hearing Willy Wonka, or Edward Scissorhands, or J.M Barry (Finding Neverland) would say.

[identity profile] sanae.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
121. Imagining how twisted relationships could actually work out somehow can be pretty fun. So iawts.

127. The lower right... with the secret in the secret in the secret... it goes on forever...

136. The trend has kind of started to get on my nerves too, glad it's not just me.

169. Ahaha... I kind of do that when recruiting yuri fans to Touhou. "There's only one male character and he only appears in a side material book!"

136, 146, 149

[identity profile] savagemandolin.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
136. I often don't get it or get a headache trying to understand what they mean. I think often people use colours that blend into the background of the secret.

146. Why don't you get a man to read your work? Although his opinion wouldn't necessarily be the final word, since men are not all the same.

149. That's probably how most love songs are written.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
103 - This is a secret? Or is it just a secret because you think they should stop for you? Really, most people I know in fandom don't read fic with OCs in major roles, with the possible exception of being villains.

144 - If I were a more pedantic person, I might go on a little rant now about language being flexible, and how sometimes even grammar geeks have to accept that some tenses in English (subjunctive, past perfect) are probably going to disappear eventually, and you know, the language will still work just as well without them. But for today, at least, I'll pretend I'm not that pedantic (just enough to slip in the gist like that), and say that it doesn't bother me in informal speech, especially if it's in character to not be grammatical.

151 - Clue love! Mrs. White was awesome.

153 - I'm not sure. I think from the stills, it looks like they were going for an edgier look in general. Part of going for a younger demographic might be including a more diverse cast, which tends to ping more with younger people. Also, I think you're confused about what "racist" means. When you cast for more diversity, you're not being "racist" you're being "too PC." (Or, you know, maybe you're just freaking inclusive?)

158 - What series? Seriously, I want to know. Share with a fellow feminist?

144 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know I'm being prescriptivist, and probably a bit classist as well. Doesn't matter, it's still like nails on a chalkboard to me. We all have our pet peeves.

(Though please, I'm not a grammar geek, I'm a linguist. I actually know what I'm talking about, unlike those who just parrot Elements of Style. =p)

103. Agreed. There are friends of friends that I have who do this and it pisses me off, especially when they want people to take the character seriously.

109. Me and my friends did a thing like Hetalia based on the buildings of our University. It's well fun. /semirelated

115. It's like reading someone's personal fantasies, plus it reeks of bad characterisation skill.

116. This, however, I approve of. ♥

132. yes yes YES this.

147. I miss being able to spend as much time as I liked on fandom. IRL is great and all, and I have awesome nerdy friends, but I love fandomtime.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
119. Some people can make it with nothing but themselves as 'fuel' for their desires. Some people don't. I don't consider it shameful to want to improve due to an example set by someone else, lord knows I've done it in the past.

121. I suppose it is because a ship like that require a lot of sacrifice and heartache. Angsty pairings that are completely unhealthy will create tragedy, healthy relationships will create romance. It is simple and you know where it's going from start to end. Perhaps people don't like the thought that with hard work, people can change into the better, because they are afraid to dream.

Or perhaps they are just realistic and consider such unlikely "one in a million" relationships unhealthy fantasies. There could be a vast number of reasons for disliking and liking such ideas of shipping, but I guess that in the end, that's how it is with relationships too... really no set, solid rules for how you build a 'good' one, so people prefer going with what they've seen work in the past for simplicities sake.

125. Agreed to a certain extent. Fandom is often a breeding ground for many different ideas, views and concepts, fanfic itself a sandbox where we can explore different scenarios to our hearts contents. To see a romantic relationship between several people does not always need to mean that one is incapable of seeing, appreciating and writing platonic friendships and pairings between just two people: it just means that may not necessarily be your favorite thing to write about.

Although I gotta say, using Kingdom Hearts may not have been the best idea. I mean, canon there is so goshdarn fuzzy you can get away with practically any pairing because there really aren't any firm, deep reasonings as to why one pairing works over another. There's more a loose gathering of concepts there, more than any solid, undeniable pairings. Still, nice secret with a point was point-having.

127. ... Now I want Xzibit to pimp their island. SOMEHOW. HE COULD DO IT HE'S XZIBIT HE CAN.

129. Nooooo.... not this. I cannot condone this. Not this.

145. No, it's okay. I too feel kind of like that, because Blue Beetle in Teen Titans means very few chances of his awesome supporting cast. No Paco makes the DC-verse a worse place. :(

150. What is this canon?

158. I'd advice you to post it anyway. Maybe noone would come, but at least if you had written it, you could be proud of what you've done, you know?

164. Oh Blitzwing. How I adore that utter wackjob, even if I have never really given that much actual thought to what you're talking about here. Though I must say that you have a point: Blitzwing does not have three separate, distinctive wills that go in different directions, as much as he just has three VERY different main methods of making decisions.

169. Bechdel test? What is that?

t!b 2. Yyyeah... I think I must agree here. Lelouch was the kind of guy who only wanted sex when he was in the pits of despair and at the bottom of his barrel, it's like... that fella and physical attraction to anyone is an almost foreign concept to me. Besides he was saving himself for Nunnally and was so grateful to Kallen for slapping him and preventing his mistake that he would never dream of making any untowards advances again. I don't care how unreasonable that thinking is it's my canon and I'm sticking to it.

115. Fail. Just... fail.

125. Part of the fun/challenge of that sort of the relationship is writing the not!OTP parts developing a close relationship. That's why I enjoy 'em. I don't actually care for the porn at all; it's building it up that's the fun part.

144. As a linguaphile I fight the death of the subjunctive every day, but... I can't get too angry at people who don't use it, especially with the lamentable lack of native English grammar education in modern society (they only taught us the subjunctive in foreign language classes, and spent forever on it because "it's difficult to tell when you're using it because English doesn't really do this anymore"). Unfortunately, as sad as it is, the subjunctive is dying, and as a writer I must admit I prefer to do without it sometimes, particularly if writing dialogue for a character who's not speaking in a formal situation.

...But in academic or non-dialogue narrative writing, lack of the subjunctive throws me off like nothing else.
