133. I agree with every aspect of this comment.

136. Sometimes it works if the characters are known to represent colors (e.g. Power Rangers) or if they're wearing starkly different colors in the image provided. Most of the time it's ridiculously subtle and it just tells me the secret maker was lazy.

101. Colin and Bradley are amazing. I'm not surprised they make you squee XD

153. I agree. Before i even found out that they (supposedly) recast them to make the characters look younger, i always thought it was to do with ethnicity.

153

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
...and why is that a problem?

Diversification is a GOOD thing. Homgenous white-washed all-English cast on a programme broadcast by a corporation that is meant to reprisent the WHOLE of this country, which, if you hadn't noticed, contains a lot of people who are NOT white or English?

I'm GLAD, if that WAS their motive (although honestly, I think they just wanted to make the cast prettier and the diversity was a coincidence) that they did it. I'd RATHER that be their motive than upping the hotness factor of the cast.

#133: They'll do that sometimes

#138: It'll do that sometimes.

#144: What if you're writing in dialect, and the character would talk like that? (Like the Comedian from Watchmen, for example. He doesn't exactly use the Queen's English.)

#144

[identity profile] darkblysse.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. People shouldn't get all anal over it in dialog. In narrative, go nuts on your Grammar Nazi trip, though.

I'll gladly take Owen back any way I can get him in a heartbeat . . . but I must admit in an ideal world I would rather have both of them back. Tosh is easily my second-favourite character and there is still so much more of their not-quite-relationship I want to see.

125. So very much yes. Newsflash to fandom: you can love someone without ~loving~ them.
132. Waitasec, there are awesome Beatles covers in this movie? Damn, now I have to actually see it :\
135. GREAT BIG MEH. More Bingley for me. <3
136. YANA, BB, YANA.
143. Ohhhhhhh Godddddddddddddd. *bitchy pretentious drama geek is bitchy and pretentious* READ THE PLAY, people. This doesn't even make SENSE as a movie. FFS, ninety percent of the plot is them coming to discover that they're in a play. I would see Tim Roth and Gary Oldman in R&GAD on stage in a nanosecond, but it doesn't work at all as a movie. /endrant
144. The Motherfucking Subjunctive is an AWESOME BAND NAME.
149. Mostly I hate it because of all the people who became "Plain White Ts fans" after the song became a single. No, you're not a fan of the band, you're a fan of the one song. Which is perfectly okay, but don't go around misrepresenting yourself.
161. He's much hotter when he wears clothes. I think it's his massive deltoids.
170. Me too, a little.

re 143

[identity profile] lemon31.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think it does work, they do, what is admittedly a very difficult task, well. The actors bring something extra to the roles e.g. there's aspects of Rosencrantz's character that we only see because of Gary Oldman. Just little things. The play itself is a work of genius, and the film should not be discredited, particularly as Tom Stoppard directed it.

111. Some of my friends are like that. "Such and such character is telling me this..." and so on. It seems a little strange to me but then I get strong character "vibes" every now and then so I suppose it's like that only amplified.

115. *Doesn't understand why Aeris is regarded as a Mary Sue to some people*

125. Yea I'm not into OT3s either....for..basically the reasons you said. I think most of the time they totally fail on characterization just because "omg the bond/hot sex that could be had". SOMETIMES it's acceptable but silly most of the time.

155. You must have made the clown secret. Again, actually watch his movies instead of getting off on "he's popular and thus sucks".

163. Awww D: I'm sorry to hear about your dad, that sounds tough...sounds like House really helps.

Lenora Critchlow was born (and from her accent raised) in London, how does that make her not English? You fail, OP.

Re: 153

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The OP was obviously refering to her skin colour - but I agree. OP fails by assuming that someone who isn't white can't be English.

Way to be racist, thar, OP.

I'm actually in a relationship like that IRL. And honestly, as I'm the proverbial "third wheel", I don't feel left out one bit. In fact, I'm probably closer to the girl than her boyfriend is... and I'm a guy.

Re: 155

I have to disagree. Sure, a lot of them are rather "over the top" as you say, but they're "over the top" in different ways. Also: not all his roles are "over the top caricatures". Tom Hanson, for instance (I know, not a movie, but it's on my brain)

ETA: Also, Gilbert Grape and Abberline. Not really caricatures as well as two extremely different characters.

And I thought I was bad.
I probably have between 90 and 100 OCs.
All for separate RPs and fandoms.
All with different personalities.
And especially all with background stories.
It worries me quite a bit.

I think... this just made my day better, however.
Knowing there is someone else out there like me is just... less.. bad?

[identity profile] armsandthewoman.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
By "Mary Sues," do you mean "characters who would happen to score high on a Mary Sue litmus test" or do you mean "authors' pet scene-stealers who can do no wrong?" Because some characters who are particularly virtuous, talented, or otherwise shiny are among my favorites (Nausicaa, Sarah Crewe, the Boss), but nobody wants to see a perfectly good plot and supporting cast bent out of shape just to make the writer's favorite character look better.

Re: 115

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh - I did the litmus test for Nausicaa once. It got SCARILY high XD (I love that film, it's probably my favourite Miyazaki film, but daaamn XD)
