...so?!

If that IS what happened, then I think it's GREAT! I think it's FANTASTIC that the BBC saw a white-washed homogenous cast in a potentially very influential show and so decided to diversify. If MORE shows did that I think it would be beneficial for EVERYONE.

Re: 153

And also? Lenora was born and raised in WESTMINSTER. IN LONDON.

You couldn't get much more English than that if you tried.

I hope you're not implying that someone who isn't white can't also be English. Seriously.

And your icon is...pretty hot.

#121: I know! So many people in fandom get butthurt when you don't portray a relationship as 100% healthy, and get even more butthurt because omg don't you know that's unhealthy? I can't believe you'd ever want a relationship like that! Because no, I don't actually want a relationship like that, and yes, I do know that it's unhealthy. And just because a relationship's unhealthy doesn't mean there can't be a little oasis of sincere love.

Tyzula is a great example of that. <3

121 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
yes, this. When it comes to fiction, finding that little oasis of sincere love in a hopelessly dysfunctional couple can be just as satisfying as seeing a "healthy" couple work out their issues and be happy together. ♥

116. You beat my record of forty-five! *applause* What fandom, if you don't mind my asking? I'm curious as to what might inspire this level of effort.

123. Hmm. It used to be that a known plagiarist was shunned forever once caught in the act, but that rule can be hard to enforce from fandom to fandom.

140. And that is why I had to stop watching it.

144. So there is a reason to use 'were' instead of 'was'. This is worth researching, since I'd heard the subjunctive existed in English, but I wasn't sure what form it took. (Always seemed silly to have a plural'd verb for a non-plural'd subject, but English is a strange amalgam.)

148. Alas, Jon's actually taken, these days!

151. Ms. White from Clue? I wonder why?

Tim Curry: "And so your husband disappeared?"
Ms. White: "He was an illusionist. That was his job."
Tim Curry: "But he never reappeared."
Ms. White: "He wasn't a very good illusionist."

152. It's a little saddening to look at that picture now. So many deaths, so many ended careers!

156. ... a vaguely tasty picture ...

167. Iraq? ... Welcome home. :-)

You must be my new best friend now. Seriously, I listen to them everyday on my way to class and it makes my day that much brighter. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they're amazing.

Gratuitous use of a Rookies icon, since that's where I first heard their music.

111, 115, 126, 141, 155,

[identity profile] ether-bunny.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
111. While I doubt I experience this in the same way you're describing (and I don't think anyone in my family is schizotypal), I still feel like I can kind of relate to this. I was once speaking to my mom, and I referred to the relationship between author and character as 'hearing' the character's voice. I had come to think of this as a fairly common way to talk about it, but my mom acted like it was really strange and gave me one of those 'wtf are you even talking about?' looks. I've never referred to it that way with my family again, even though it's pretty common in my writing classes. I guess I just understand the impulse to avoid that potential speculation altogether.

115. I think it depends on the character, the way people react to them. I tend to think that more mature readers prefer a character (particularly a lead protagonist) that earns something in their journey, and learns things about themselves. After all, if there's no internal growth, what's the purpose of delving into their psyche to begin with? Most people don't like the bells-and-whistles physical traits and inexplicable talents that don't serve the plot, and a lot of people don't like characters that just have things given to them for no apparent reason in their own canon. The two characters that most immediately jump to mind for me are Nymphadora Tonks and Ginny Weasley in HP. While they're represented as being intelligent, strong, beautiful, talented, etc - it never really serves much of a canon purpose, except to woo males. They don't really add to the plot at all and the things they do tend to be inborn instead of worked for, which makes it seem even less justified in terms of narrative. I would say this also applies to Bella Swan, though my problem with her is more her complete lack of strength and inability to be an independent person, but she does have that ridiculous 'moves-to-a-new-town-where-everyone-finds-her-stunning' thing going on, as well as having this relationship which is presented in the narrative as perfect, has to do essentially nothing to maintain it, and is willing to give up all control she DOES have in order to let someone else do everything for her.

It seems to be a fantasy fulfillment for more immature readers, the idea of getting things just for being ~amazing~ and so the opinions and fanworship of characters that some consider Mary Sue characters can come across as really ... shallow and stupid, essentially. I don't think this is true of all characters that get commonly labeled as Mary Sues, however, because the term is really thrown around like crazy. A lot of people just use it to mean canon females that grab the attention of their favored canon males, which I think is unjustified in a lot of cases.

126. I also love him, though I don't really think he's the most gorgeous. But I tend to love the men who I don't think that about? I don't think Adrien Brody is all that good looking (at least in the face >.>) but damn if I'm not mofucking obsessed with him and his nose anyway.

141. LoL aw. I actually really liked him with Angela, and I don't know how I'm going to feel about ~single~ Dwight. :[ I was so sad when they broke up. Though she kind of deserved it, I guess, but come on. He's not exactly a prize hen himself, is he? Not that I don't love him, but really... I can't think of anyone else who could make a relationship actually work with Dwight. Though I guess if Michael can find his perfect mate (and have her ripped away from him ;_;) I guess Dwight could find his, too.

155. ...Really? I actually think he's a pretty damn dynamic actor. I mean, Sam from Benny and Joon just doesn't seem anything even remotely close to Rochester from the Libertine...

Re: 111, 115, 126, 141, 155,

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Tonks and Ginny aren't Mary Sues because they aren't really... you know, important enough. Tonks is a momentary distraction, Ginny is Harry's human ticket into the Weasly family. They're flat characters, but not ones that really command your attention or take over the story.

122. HAHAHA...well you see, I think the KPop fangirls are too busy killing eachother to really need anyone giving them hate. Also, the number of non-Asians in KPop fandom is really pretty low. So it isn't exactly the same. I wouldn't say so anyways. I mean, yeah, you get some fangirl-Korean (it's just as annoying, what a shock, though it's mostly restricted to saying things like 민호사랑해 (Minho I love you...or whomever) and referring to stars as 오빠/언니/형/누나 (respective terms for older guys (woman speaking)/older girls (woman speaking)/older guys (man speaking)/older girls (man speaking))...they are really more for family relationships actually hahaha.
