Exactly the same happened to me! I make sure to leave long, detailed and thoughtful comments on anything good I read (and probably on about half of the mediocre stuff) because I know how GREAT it feels to get a review like that. (Sadly, I've only experienced said emotion about three times in my five years of writing.)

175. I think that if an opinion is best stated as "I hate X", it's not unreasonable to call someone out on it. There's preferences ("I don't enjoy X, so I have Y") and then there's vitriol. All sides in this one need to learn the difference.

And possibly learn to say what they mean rather than short-changing themselves with verbal short-cuts, but I suppose that would be asking for too much.

Whiskey is a kelpie. The kelpie, since there seems to be only one in Bear's world; that's not true of every world in which there are kelpies. Whiskey lives in Faerie and only comes into the human world to hunt and kill humans. His natural form is that of a horse, but he can pretend to be human. Originally he hunted in the British Isles, and looked like a white man; after he started hunting in America, and saw black people, he decided they were prettier. He only pretends to be a human so he can eat us. He pretends to be a black guy because he thinks he looks hot like that; he doesn't know there's anything wrong with doing this because five year olds who watch Sesame Street know more about the history of race relations than he does.

wow i don't know whether to dcide if you're a sucky writer who never wins or just jealous of writers who do win.

with the last fic "award" i won two years ago, there was only ONE person that knew me who voted for me. the rest of the votes i earned were from complete strangers, at least three of those did not even ship the pairing that the story was about,

that said, bragging IS rude. but are they really bragging or are they just posting once going "wow, i won!" if it's the latter, get over yourself and look to improve your own writing. it's not the BNF's fault that your writing sucks.

You're not alone. Even though the kid's lost some of his edge as he's gotten older, the rest of the cast just works so well together, both the main characters and the secondary characters. The timing is impeccable and the chemistry is fantastic.
