175. Have to agree with this one. :/ I love slash and het and gen alike, but I don't think fans of any type of pairing should feel marginalized. You don't like het, cool; don't read it. No one apart from you gives a fuck about your preferences, so you could really just shut up about it.

153. YAY!! I ship it too! <3

178. I don't think anyone ever implied there aren't other books with skanky race issues, or that Ebear's is the worst of the lot. But she posted a how-to on how to write CoC, and then her rabid racist dogpack came to her defense when it was pointed out that she had some baggage of her own.

114. THIS. I didn't even know who They Might Be Giants were until the Mtv parody episode. Thank you, Tiny Toons!

122. Holy cow, a Hitchcock secret. Kudos to you, OP.

132. I love this secret simply because it has a Project A-Ko image in the background. As for the secret itself, I've been in the fandom about that long and anime didn't save or ruin my life. But I certainly like to think it made my life better; it opened me up to the possibility of being into all sorts of things from other countries.

178. THANK YOU, whoever you are, for giving me a reason to articulate why i've always been skeeved out by the idea of reading Tamora Pierce. THANK YOU SO MUCH <33333

162. It's been a while since I caught up on this show (I used to love it) but I have to ask: omg WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS SCENE?

With all the weird stuff that's gone through my head during REM sleep (which included at one point getting a spanking from Dr. Light of Megaman fame and actually finding it erotic at the time), I honestly don't find any of those hard to believe at *all* as dreams. Actually, someone who *consciously* thought up one of those scenarios would seem much more freaky to me.

[identity profile] rosevixen.livejournal.com 2009-02-05 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
110: Oh my god, I was just thinking about this. It's so obvious. I mean, they lived together, one had a really bad marriage, and they relied on each other for everything. Best dude friends do not go that far as to think of the other as the best writer ever, IMO. Totally banging.

You forgot the one with the bratty alien princess that Kirk talks about introducing to the Earth custom of spanking.

Oh god, my mom have Slumdog Millionaire on bootleg? The temptation!

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
107. That was the episode that nearly raped my childhood since I never seen it for some odd reason. I was torn between lulz and ಠ_ಠ the entire time.

111. A variant of Six Degrees of Separation/Kevin Bacon? Also, I miss the shit out of Cleopatra 2525.

112. ಠ_ಠ Stupid story, bro. I'm pretty sure anyone who took a basic Global Studies class knows about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, unless they're under 13.

115. There's a RP comm for it, IIRC. I know New York would be portrayed as a fashionable violent, snooty jerkass with a Brooklyn accent or something and likes pizza and bagels. And I will lol and love it and lol and love it hard.

120. D: Why?

133. Chill. Does it matter how someone got interested in learning a different culture? Sheesh.

138. Oh god, I lol'd hard because of the major dissonance between the pic and secret. I should watch Sketchbook but I already have my plate full right now...

143. I totally get what you're saying, the two are basically two different series. And it saddens me that Caesar didn't make his appearance in the TV series yet.

154. I never did. In fact, I ship nothing on that show.

156. lol.

158. I'm going to see it for the lulz even though I burnt out of Dragonball a long time ago.

165. It's understandable since they have the same last name. I did it myself like a week ago.

170. *sigh* I hate secrets like these because you can word this so much better without bashing other series. Ugh.

175. Maybe it's just me, but I see people get called out a lot more for not liking/reading het more than slash.

Not!Secret #2. After looking at the noms for Best Picture this year, you are pretty much correct. TDK was a great movie, but I have to admit that Curious Case of Benjamin Button was better. Not saying CCBB is the best of the lot, but I doubt TDK could win anyway.

179.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-02-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would someone DO THAT? Pizza is not meant to be cut in square unless it's a Sicilian pizza.

This New Yorker cry in blood at the thought. I am glad you have seen the light!

145. I do RP, but I don't read or write fic or otherwise really get involved in fandom either (except for being on this comm, of course). I don't know why I still read f!s either.

178. What exactly happened with that Elizabeth Bear book, anyway? I mean, what were its skeevy race issues (I haven't read it) and where was the resulting blow-up? I keep seeing references to the internet fallout, and I'm sort of morbidly curious.

[livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong has a roundup here (http://rydra-wong.livejournal.com/146697.html); the first few posts should give a good idea of how it started. The first Seeking Avalon link talks about the race issues.

122. What exactly did Hitchcock say, and could I have a link to it if possible?

136. Add me to the list, bb!

139. What an adorable picture!

179. That's just messed up, yo. I'm glad Sipowicz was there to make you see the light! ;)

It was in one of the interviews in this book (http://www.amazon.com/Hitchcock-Revised-Helen-G-Scott/dp/0671604295); I don't have my copy currently with me, but Truffaut was asking him if the subtext was intentional and Hitch said it was. I also remember him stating (this is close to verbatim, I think): "The girl will be in love with her Uncle Charlie for the rest of her life."

[identity profile] pugnacioun.livejournal.com 2009-02-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
133. Some may be genuine Anglophiles. My family went to England when I was in fifth grade and I fell in love with England - my love for British television came several years later when I discovered the ~internet. There may be some - naye, many - who became obsessed with Doctor Who after they started obsessing over British culture - although I don't know your flist, so I can't really say.

Also, wow. Two Boosh secrets.

Gosh, America nuked Japan? I totally had no idea! My mind, she is blown!

Seriously, please tell me you're not really insinuating that most Americans don't know about that. What they teach in schools can't possibly have changed that much since I was last in one.

173: Not that it will make you feel any better but it happens in the BTVS/ATS fandom too. The three biggest award sites are run by friends of an author who wins everything. Her writing is horrible. It's just one big popularity contest. Like "let's pat each other on the back and make fanclubs for each other. Squee! We're so cool!"

It only makes it more glaringly obvious something stinks when the award winners never get recced except by their friends. Good stories tend to get noticed through word of mouth and that's better than any award banner.
