115. This made me so happy. I would die of excitement if this happened.

YES. I AM NOT ALONE. I FEEL THE SAME WAY ;__;

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
106. Yeah, but that's true of any show with a Big Name Producer. See: Aaron Sorkin, JJ Abrams.
117. SO MUCH WORD. <3
124. IAWTS so much. There's the creators fucking up, and there's annoying fan entitlement.
141. ...what. what. what. Is this the best idea ever? Maybe.
162. My dad lived there for a few years when he was eight, because my Granddad worked for the NYT international dept and was stationed in Japan. He is fluent in the language and taught me some of it as a kid. Japanese culture was a huge part of my life literally since birth. My interest in anime came completely separate from my interest in Japanese culture (when I was nine and watching Digimon, all I knew about where it came from was that it was on Fox Kids). I'm so. fucking. sick. of everyone stereotyping me.

re: 162

[identity profile] sharpwind.livejournal.com 2009-02-22 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Here fucking here. I don't have the same experience as you, but I've been invested in Japanese culture since I was nine, when my fourth grade social studies class did a unit on it one semester. I didn't even discover anime for another two years, and it wasn't for another year or so after that until I learned the two were even related (which, yeah, made me \o\). It's really stupid to think that peoples' interest in something exists solely because of its popularity; even if it were, who the hell are we to judge? The interest has to come from somewhere.

tl;dr people like that are the reason I am embarrassed to admit my major to people.

What's a "weaboo"? And how do you say it?

[identity profile] shiplizard.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
a) A nonsense term taken from a webcomic to replace the word 'wapanese' (whites who want to be Japanese, see also 'wigger.') People found 'wapanese' offensive, I guess, so there was a board filter to take out that word and put in 'weeaboo.' In a case of INTERNET TRUTHINESS, weeaboo became what it had sought to replace.

b) Wee-a-boo, I guess.

147. Icon says it all, anon. I'm thrilled with the way Let Dai ended - hopeful, but not blatantly happy. And I also think they're together in America, where Dai's father will never be able to touch them.

More people need to read it!

haha I use the same icon as my default! Let Dai really does need more fans. My friends have read a couple books but they say it's too angsty for them. They don't know what they're missing.

137. i think as time went on (past the 50s/60s at least) the disney princesses definitely became more headstrong! i mean, look at jasmine, belle, and ariel. even though they do end up falling love, i still think they are very strong. sorry you didn't grow up with them though. ): disney was pretty much my childhood.

106 - Also asking for context/sauce of quote. Does Yahtzee talk about Joss now? (I like most of his stuff, but that's as a whole. He tends to have shows that start out good and then become trainwrecks.)

154 - If a girl loves yuri, I don't think she's straight. Ithink she's a little bi, at least.

I think I remember Yahtzee saying something about Whedon. GLAH, but I'm blanking. I think it was one of his throwaways, though. Not an extended rant.

Nope - she went to an infinitely less nerdy organization, where I think she'll be a much better fit.

121: Not to throw theology into it, and I'm not even a monotheist, but it's specifically the Christian concept of God that worries more about what you think than what you do. If it's the pre-Christian Greek idea of the Supreme Being, or the Jewish G-d, then he'd be more concerned with your actions, so you're good to go.

129: Because of course thinking and debating aren't fun for anyone. :-(

137: Liking pretty dresses doesn't make you a bad feminist. Expecting Prince Charming to come running in from stage left and solve all your problems for you might, but not a ball gown and a sparkly tiara - those are just dress-up fun.

141: Yay, Ace! And I can sort of see it, too. Ace is one of the old companions I want to see back - we've had the return of the companion who wanted a romantic relationship in Sarah Jane, and that was great, but I'd also like to see the return of a companion who saw the Doctor as a father/uncle figure, and Ace is the perfect one for that. (Apologies to anyone who ships Seven/Ace - I don't, but neither do I intend to harsh anyone's squee here.)

142: If a rush candidate acts that way to anyone for any reason, that's a good reason to vote her down. Sororities have enough of a rep for being snooty; don't pick people who will reinforce that image!

149: I normally wouldn't, but in his role as Frank T. J. Mackie from Magnolia? Hurt-comfort topping, here I go!

154: Best secret we've had all week. Good on you for knowing what you like.

161: Oh, god, and then Ballmer and Woz would be standing outside the door eyeing each other with mutual distrust but having to work together just this once, and yelling at them to open this door right now you don't love each other and you don't really want to be doing this, and gaaah . . . great, you made me ship it, too. :-(

127. I can't think of his name... I had it and then I totally lost it...

134. Signed.

137. Also signed (my family would be surprised given how anti-doll I was in the day).

162. Would you say then that no one can legitimately have appreciation for Japan and the culture then? Or maybe that no one can have a legitimate appreciation for a culture they're not born into? I'm just wondering why you say that.

167. Who is your lying supposed to help? If you're not happy in fandom, or if it's not giving you what you need in your life, it's not right for you. Lying to anyone about it doesn't change anything.

104 Shouldn't you be more worried about that fact that it's a Guy Ritchie film? You know, the same guy who did Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla? The director has complete control of the make and feel of the film. What type of Holmes film are we going to get with him at the helm?
