A male and female character can't seem to be just friends without people expecting them to hook up. I'd say this actually says worse things about our society than fangirls hooking up males; think about how often mainstream entertainment will have a male and female hook up by the end of a movie even if the two have no real chemistry together. Think about how often it ends up being the LEAD characters.

It's pretty sad when you're watching a movie and a chick pops up halfway through and you just know she's going to end up making out with the male lead by the time the movie's over; you can predict it. What does that say about mainstream society's assumptions about male and female friendships? It's not just a problem with fiction, either. I can't tell you how many times I've found myself in a situation where I make a new guy friend and my relatives automatically assume we should get together; my friends find themselves in the same situation as well.

I think the problem you should be attacking here isn't slash, it's the fact that we can't see friendship as friendship. That's the issue.

In Larson's earlier show "tick...tick...BOOM" he even points out that the lead couple doesn't have a sustainable relationship and they agree to cool it, but in RENT he has two extremely volatile pairs that pretty much just happen to get their happy ending despite one featuring someone insanely narcisstic (Maureen) and the other having someone extremely pushy and insensitive (Mimi). "Carpe diem", I get it, but zest for life shouldn't stop you from carefully considering your romantic partners.

I don't hate myself! The majority of fandom just seems to view Sasuke and Sakura's relationship as one-sided and destructive. To me, Sakura is an independent girl who has gotten over her childhood crush, but still cares about him deeply to never give up on him, no matter where he goes. It's a lot like Naruto's relationship to Sasuke, just with a girl. I want to be that person who has faith in him even when other people don't.
