My favorite character in my fandom is, in my opinion, turned into an often ridiculous version of himself in order to make him gay. There are deliberate hints in canon that suggests that he was into girls and his 'partner' is MARRIED with a kid! WTF Fandom?

150. Firstly, blaming a genre for the deficiencies of some of its contributors is just plain silly.

Secondly, I don't write slash because I think that male relationships lack depth without a sexual element; I write it because I think it's entertaining, and sometimes hot. It does not inform my understanding of real-world relationships at all.

Thirdly, everything you've just said can be applied to het. The fact that you've neglected to recognize this is what calls the reasoning behind your aversion into question. If slash doesn't float your boat, that's fine. But if you insist on justifying your dislike, and the reasons are the ones you've listed on your secret, I get the impression that you're being disingenuous when you only apply those standards to one genre. Especially when the problems you've listed exist across the board in fandom.

See this, and not other shipping (because I don't care if my ships conflict) or anything else, is why I have so much difficulty with the Zuko/Mai thing. Because in Season 3, she's presented as being a real, three-dimensional person, with thoughts and feelings that, while buried, are present. I can't reconcile that with this girl who doesn't care if her baby brother lives or dies at the beginning. Season Two Mai is apathatic and flat, and that was funny. But...it just doesn't gel.



117. Awesomesauce. Coming from a hugely Catholic community (happy Mardi Gras, btw). I keep forgetting that Hellboy's Catholic, but I remember feeling strangely vindicated in the movie, seeing his rosary and the importance of that to him (granted, I try to be a good Christian, but I'm a lousy Catholic). Though my top fictional Catholic will always be Father Mulcahy. We should all be more like him.



123. Mm...superior? No. Because there is no superior medium. For some stories, comics are the appropriate vehicle, just as for some, books are, and for others, a movie is the best choice.
While I enjoy movies made of his work a great deal, I think that for the impact and storytelling, a comic is always the best medium for an Alan Moore story, because he adds a depth that needs words and visual to convey all the seperate stories.

But with a statement that blatant, you're probably just trying to be wanky.

Okay, for everyone with "oh noes, I'm a bad feminist" secrets... There are two types of radical feminists. (This is ignoring the liberal feminists, who would be pretty laid-back themselves). There's the "radical-culturist" ones, who believe that lesbian sex is the only sex that's never demeaning and say all womanliness is good, women are inherently better than men, porn is bad, etc.

There's also the "radical-libertarians", who say androgyny is better since traits are inherently good or bad, not inherently masculine or feminine. They also say people should be able to enjoy whatever type of porn they want, be it demeaning or whatever, because it's their business and their kinks.

103 - I have to say, I agree. I understand that she may not have had a choice with Azula and all--but what tells me that she actually didn't give a damn is that she didn't even try to save Tom-Tom. She didn't try to swipe him for herself, and she even threw needles at Sokka who was holding Tom-Tom while trying to steady himself on a flying bison several stories in the air.

Of course, just about every time I've asked this, people have dismissed me as a butthurt Zutarian...and I don't even like Zutara. D: It's like...FFS, people, there are valid reasons to dislike Mai besides shipwank, y'know?
