No, not at all. Shipping countries just doesn't do it for me. I see them all as siblings or buddies. At most, I could maybe see some of them being in very chaste PG-rated relationships.

Honestly I don't know why the fandom gets all bent out of shape over the baby brother thing. Zuko hired someone to kill Aang. He also betrayed his uncle who loved him to side with Azula. And he redeemed himself and the fandom happily looks away and forgives Zuko all his evils.

I like Mai. I always have. What I don't like is the fandom double standards.

And where is this overwhelming Mai love? With the exception of some communities, a lot of the fandom hates on her.

Fandom just hates wimmin.

101. I was never interested in Bond film before he was Bond.

121. Me too BB. In fact I just did this not even an hour ago.

124. Isn't the point of posting a secret to have someone be able to read it? That's killing my eyes.

137. I'm not following your logic here.

165 - Join the club, we meet on Thursdays. Even my mum has incest goggles and she doesn't know anything about fandom, so I don't know if it's solely to blame. Maybe we're all just overly sexualised these days. *wiggles eyebrows*

That's a joke? xD

In that moment Azula was able to manipulate Mai towards 'the interest of the Nation', in the same way that Azula manipulated Zuko to betrayal his uncle and his ideals...

But nobody never mentions that :/

I guess that Mai trusted in Azula enough by that moment to think that she could had a plan anyway...

YES.
But the difference in fandom's eyes is that Mai is stupid and evil and fat and a girl. And Zuko is totally hot and cute and awesome AND GOOD ALL ALONG!!1

I agree with you, but if Quasimodo were attractive or even normal-looking I don't think he would have the social issues he has. I doubt that he would have been forced to live in isolation if he had been normal-looking. I don't think he'd have been treated very well, but he probably would have been allowed out in public. He was never treated like an normal person, so he never learned to interact like one. I think his social failure stems from a devastating lack of experience and being treated like a monster. So if he were attractive, he wouldn't have been raised in the same way and wouldn't have the same personality. So it's really difficult to say how Esmerelda would have percieved him.

Forgive me if I got something wrong--I read the book and saw the movie, I could be mixing canons.

Not OP, but...

[identity profile] etchandetchan.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you're saying, but I think what the OP means is that if Esmeralda were to disregard Quasimodo's appearance, she still would not have been attracted to him. Could be mistaken, but that's how I read it.

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
103. Yeah, god forbid a villain actually do something immoral. What has the world come to?

Also, what's that about fandom's love for Mai? Did this turn into Bizarro Fandom Secrets while I wasn't looking?

135. ...I ship it.
karel: (misc; ipod D:)

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
103. You had something of a point right up until you appealed to the supposed "cuteness." Not everyone likes babies. Had it been ugly, would it have been "more okay" to you? Of course, I don't agree with you either way -- obviously Mai wasn't going to needlessly sacrifice herself -- what good would it have done? And my god, it's not like Aang was going to eat the kid or something.

117. Why does anyone's religion matter in fandom anyway? Unless you're preaching "OMG HATE HATE HATE" all over the place, why is it anyone's business?

150. I hate the idea that all relationships need to have sex in them in order to be meaningful. This does not just apply to yaoi. But you've obviously missed a lot of fics, because a lot of them are just friendshippy/focused on nonsexual relationships. You might try things that are labeled more under the action/adventure or gen categories.

166. You might want to be careful about the scary. Angry can get you places when used appropriately. Scary doesn't represent your views well at all. When people get "scary" towards me, I stop hearing what they're actually saying and start thinking "fuck, where's the nearest exit DDD:" and "are they going to attack me -- what in this room can become a weapon if needed -- my knee hurts, god, I hope they don't go for the knee" ):

I'm one of the ones who doesn't like babies. ALL babies are ugly to me (especially this particularly fugly specimen my mother is holding in a picture taken around the time I was born)

The 'cuteness' comment irked me too

Anime women's bodies are so idealized and unrealistic that the way I see it, wanting to bang an anime chick =/= wanting to bang RL women. And wanting to have sex with a real woman =/= wanting to be in a romantic relationship with one. Depending on how you want to define your sexual identity, you could still be sexually attracted to women and continue to identify as heterosexual. On the other hand, if your fiancee was out of the picture and you'd seriously consider entering a romantic relationship with a woman, that's a different story.

[identity profile] monkey-fruit.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't been keeping up with either the anime or the manga, so unless things have changed since I last saw/read it...doesn't Sasuke mostly ignore Sakura?

Re: 115.

[identity profile] xevochic.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, I'm sure he doesn't even remember she exists. All Sasuke knows now is revenge, loss, hatred, destruction, and failure. A whole lot of failure.

108: You've got good taste.
123: I disagree. I think both media have their own strengths and weaknesses, and that comics can be better for certain stories, but not for other stories. And that was a really generic sort of response, but anything else I could say would end up seriously TL;DR.
133: That's really nice. It's not often a secret gives me a Warm and Fuzzy Feeling, but yours did.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
104. I agree with your dad. I just don't get bandom/actor RPF (not a knock against those who like it, it's just not my thing.)

117. Think of it this way - being Christian gets you mild guff in fandom, but a ton of privilege IRL! Decent trade.

118. Hahahahahamyeyesohgodmyeyes...

121. I can kind of guarantee you that everyone who owns the song has done this at least once.

124. Why in G-d's name would you come to the conclusion that flashing light blue text on a flashing light blue background was in any way a good idea?

137. Wait, are you making the assumption that snarky/blunt = male? Because either I'm totally misreading this, or you have a really fucked up definition of acting "female"/"male".

145. Thaaaanks for sharing.

147. Such is the peril of lusting after corpses.

150. I agree with some of your basic points, but I will add that bright red text over dark, colorful drawings is way more of an a abomination than anything you've described.

158. Knowing this is a good first step. It is, however, a really terrible last step.

159. YES THIS. I tried to watch it, I swear, because everyone else liked it, but there is absolutely nothing I enjoy about it.

166. You're allowed to enjoy those sorts of portrayals as long as you realize why they might be problematic. Don't be so hard on yourself.

168. Is that Orisinal?

Is that your own list? If that's the case, then all we have to do is Google and match your ratings, then we'd know who you are...

110.
Anti-aliasing, use it.

112.
That's fandom?

113.
Thanks for the reminder. I will now pay closer attention to what people write on their hands!

124.
I don't understand why some secret makers are so adamant against making their secrets legible. The whole point of making secrets is for people to see them, right?

If you want people to take you seriously, don't hurt their eyes.

145.
That's disturbing yet I want to squeeze Spongebob just to see Mr. Crab's jizz squeezing out.

150.
Then you have to be specific when you tell people you don't like yaoi/slash in fanfics, otherwise, some people would jump to conclusions.

151.
See 124.

136. It miffs me off, because it completely undermines the book - it takes every value that hugo tried to crystallize and just skims over it. And, imho, while I can't hold frollo's character up to the same thing (totally not synonymous), phoebus hasn't been changed that much in the book's transcendence into disney film. kk, he's more chivalrous and knightly than lawyer-y and shady, but, still.

Then of course, it's Disney, what was I expecting lmao.

idk this is pointless i have no thesis lmao

*120: yes, movies are so much better with them, don't forget about Cinematic Titanic though!
*123: agreed! I can't remember crying when reading a book, but still bawl like a baby when I read "The Crow". Art + text conveys so much more.

103. Like Mai had any other choice in *that* moment. And even if she did have it and took the wrong option, she still went through enough character development. Which her haters *deny* by harping on what she did *in the beginning*. =/

150. In a way, I agree with you. Platonic friendships (especially intense ones) are just as interesting. But on the other hand...don't know why sex is a bad thing all of a sudden. It's not. Get over it.
