150. I'm going to address this because I used to feel the exact same way. unfortunately, it's a really immature way of thinking, because it assumes that all slash is like that. It can be very well-written and in-character.
As a creator myself I have a large amount of respect for the characters in other people's works, and honestly, across the board there are bad fanworks and good fanworks, and it's about the QUALITY of the work, not the content. There's good canon and bad slash and bad canon and good slash.

If slash is not your thing, that's perfectly okay, it's just a preference. But it doesn't mean that all of it is atrocious and destroys canon. And I still enjoy good old friendship fics too, so.

169. The guy I'm dating and I are both bi, and I actually find it makes things a lot LESS awkward. Just because you might like women too doesn't mean you're going to go cheating on your significant other.

170. I went through the gratuitous smut phase, and luckily I got it out of my system because characters having realistic relationships is so much more interesting, even if it means the sex isn't ohmigod perfect all the time.

150. It also doesn't address the fact that most fics involve taking one, maybe two or three sets of males in relationships and making those relationships romantic or sexual. That doesn't mean the assumption that all male/male relationships are like that, it's just that within the context of the fic THOSE relationships are like that.

Of course, if you look through fandom you'll probably find that happen to nearly every male/male relationship in one fic or another, but that's the total rather than the average.

150. Perhaps I'm just evil or mean, but I really have trouble caring when this is an issue that has plagued women and their relationships to one another or other men for as long as can be remembered.

That's part of the reason I do like slash. I get so tired of seeing a woman I like and relate to, only to inevitably have her end up in romantic entanglements that I don't like or relate to. I'm sick of thoroughly enjoying a male-female friendship, only to become depressed when I remember that no matter how interesting or nuanced their relationship is at the moment, it will inevitably succumb to romance.

This is nothing against romance. I love romance--het slash or femslash, it's all good--but there is a world of difference between me choosing to see something more between people, and being told by society time and time again that when women are "too close" they are automatically lesbians, and that friendship between a man and a woman is an impossibility ("unless one of them is ugly, har!").

So pardon me if I'm not crying a river over your precious male-male friendships, which have been sanctified for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
