140. Watchmen fans can be irrationally wanky when they want to be...but, then again, the same can be said of any fandom. (This is actually the reason I have yet to read Watchmen, though I want to like burning.)

152. I, for one, pre-ordered it. Well, it was a birthday present from my friend.

140. But can't you read it without ever having to anything to do with the fandom? It seems a strange reason not to read something that you want to...

you look familiar?

117- Uh...lots of people with weak father figures can be good parents.

156- I know what you mean. A lot. And it's such an important thing, but just like...IDK, it suddenly seems like all the discussion has suddenly popped up everywhere, all the time? And there's NO middle ground, you either think something is worthless do to it's negative bits, or you are the one who's negative (And of course person to person that's not the feeling, but overarching that's how it feels). And if you ever point out anything disagreeing, you get lumped in with it as well :/

163. I think that's kind of stupid. Of course, he's a douche for cheating on his grilfriend, but it doesn't change a thing about his music. He believed it when he wrote it, and the way he acted shouldn't make any difference. If you can't get over the fact that these people aren't perfect, and probably made many more mistaskes that we didn't learn about, you're the one who's missing out on something. It's about the music, not about them.

Yeah, okay, "ruined" is a little dramatic, but it's still hard to listen to. What attracted me to their music in the first place was that it had a sense of genuine emotion and personality behind it, and I resent Ross for "making" me (I know, I know) think "Ugh, what a jackass" when I'm trying to listen to the alt. take on Behind the Sea. It's so gorgeous, I don't like having negative stuff associated with it.

I don't think Castiel fandom as a whole wants him to fall, actually - opinion seems to be very divided.

I'm amenable to the idea. It all depends on what happens with this apocalypse storyline. If that plot is still going on in season five, Castiel needs to be an angel; it's how he fits into the show, and it would be OOC for him to abandon the war effort by becoming human anyway. However, if the apocalypse is averted this season, what then? How could Castiel the angel possibly have a place in S5? That's where I think falling becomes an interesting potential plotline. He'd still have knowledge and some abilities (Anna, for example, used telekinesis, and banished the angels with blood magic), so he'd be useful, but he wouldn't have his current plot-breaking angel powers. I'm not rooting for it to happen, really, as I love me some angel, but I'd still be happy if it did. I think he wants to fall, anyway. 4x10 has convinced me of that, and also that his plotline is heading that way - he might not fall until the series finale, but I think he probably will. Why do you hate the idea so much that you'd stop watching?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
113. Because Matts only canon traits are video games and stripes and otherwise he is a blank canvas upon which you have projected yourself, and so in reality you are only relating to a version of yourself that you designed exclusively to be relateable?

117. So WHAT? Are you one of those people who thinks single mothers can never raise a kid right, gay people (or in this case lesbians) should never have kids and you are automatically fucked if your parents were?

On top of that, he had motherfucking Dumbledore.

128. I know right. I want the outfit and the tophat too. Except I want it with pants plznthnx.

134. If it helps you heal then it's healthy. Fuck the haters, as they say. Most of them are completely humourless and too desperately afraid of being called a Mary Sue to ever have an original thought, anyway.

If you're really worried that you're getting in too deep, why don't you switch it up every now and then? Surely you can find other fictional crushes, spread yourself out a little? Maybe throw in a few role models here and there, if you're finding fiction in general is a good avenue for coping and rebuilding.

Anyway, for what it's worth, I kind of admire the people who can put that much time and energy into their OCs and imagination and stuff. I don't always like the product or the subject matter, but hey, I wish I were that industrious.

140. Haha, yeah. I can see how the trailer would have skewed your expectations - and if you think of it from the flipside, that's why the fans are kind of upset, it's really a lot different in aesthetic.

152. Platinum? I'd like to pick it up but I'm not sure I can justify spending money on it having already bought pearl.

158. The "incest" doesn't really bother me. It's not like they grew up together.

164. GAY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW LINGUISTICS AND COPYWRITE LAW. I BECOME VIOLENTLY ILL WHEN PEOPLE USE THE WRONG WORD. OH GOD, HOW DO I SURVIVE FROM DAY TO DAY 4CHAN IS THE ONLY PLACE THAT UNDERSTANDS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I can tell you how it ends. One of the authors went batshit and caused a ton of drama within the fandom. The other just... didn't really cared anymore.

117. Black and Lupin don't count because they don't seem to make really good father figures :p

Your comment reminds me of the Larkin poem:

"They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself."

But there's no such thing as a perfect father, just as there's no such thing as a perfect person. This doesn't mean life stops because it cannot obtain perfection. I liked how all of JKR's characters had pretty glaring flaws along with their good points...

128. I know, right? The legs. THE LEGS! Plus, I'm actually scarily addicted to her music.

140. Eh, that's what you get with hype aversion. Not to mention the fact that elements which were revolutionary in Watchmen's time have been done to death since. HARDCORE(!!!) 90s, I'm looking at you.

I was really impressed with Watchmen when I first read it, but that's partly because I really liked the way it made use of its medium, and I love film noir, which strongly influences the plot.

147. I said that Captain Jack looked like Tom Cruise (and Benton Fraser), but my friends thought I was crazy. I am redeemed!

150. I agree. I saw it in its first run and was angry when it was canceled, but I don't think of it as the Best Show Evar. Even the Best Sci-Fi Evar. And, honestly, the appropriation of Chinese culture while carefully side-stepping casting any Asians whatsoever except for the scene with the butcher selling DOGS? Practically a Show-Killer, for me.

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, poem! Thanks for sharing!

I do believe that final stanza was in the last book of Series of Unfortunate Events. I'd never seen the first two stanzas before, though I'm sure plenty of kids more enterprising than myself looked up the whole poem. Which just goes to show yet again what a subversive children's author Dan Handler makes for.
