Actually, you're kind've right about that, but likely for different reasons than you think.

In Diplomatics, the science of analysing the form of documents and records -- generally in order to ascertain their authenticity (it's related to paleography, the study of script) -- there are a number of persons who can be responsible for the generation of any document or record.

The writer of a document/record is the person who wrote the text. The author of a document/record is the person who has the authority to create/issue that document or record. So, for example, if a lawyer has his assistant write a business letter to a client on his behalf, the assistant is the writer of that letter, but the lawyer is the author, because he is the person who, given his position and qualifications, has the authority to issue it.

In the same sense, this kind of applies to original works and fanfiction. The creator of the original work is the author of that work -- he or she has the authority to produce the material due to copyright, agreements with publishers, his or her own creative ideas, etc...

Any person who creates fanfiction within that author's universe is only a writer and not an author, because they do not possess the legal authority to produce official works in that universe.

Make sense? Probably not, but it's amusing to think of fanfictionin those terms.

102. Wait, Gundam isn't power rangers? Shit, why did I spend all of First Gundam staring at a dude in pink tights, then?

130. Oh, that is the point. Anyone who doesn't see that probably is a moron. But to be honest, I can still like Ali as a villain. He's not some scheming fruit like the Skittles, he's not a decent fellow like Sergei, he's not a normal person driven to the edge by revenge like Louise, or even someone who takes it personally like Graham. Ali is 00's Yazan, or Joker - he's just evil, and he wants to fuck everyone else up, and that's how he gets his jollies off.

And while I can't love a villain like that, I can definitely find them amazing, because sometimes Gundam buries itself under layers of villains who could be good guys under other circumstances. Ali is just evil. That's what he is. It's amazingly, and even admirably straightforward.

111. You know, I'd never thought of him like that, but I think you've got a bit of a point there. The parts that seem to dislike her are the ones who would actually have hangups about it.

117. He's still got the Weasleys around to give helpful advice and support, so he wouldn't be totally alone in trying to figure out fatherhood.

121. You can't just ignore them and make sure to only RP with other people?

108. ...Well, I like the song, does that count? And Emile. I love Emile.

116. Hee! Oh, man, he should be on most often. I frickin' love The Soup.

117. I did object slightly to the whole 'everyone gets married and has kids' idea--not everyone wants that. (Well, Charlie didn't, because he "always preferred dragons to women." OK, Jo. Sure. THERE ARE SEVEN KIDS; ONE'S GOTTA BE GAY.) I think I can see Harry being a decent father; he matured so much during DH...but I'd love to see some fic or something of him being nervous about just that, never having had a solid father and stuff. (And P.S., did Ginny get to name any of her own kids? Dang.)

124. I kinda know what you mean. Lost will end when I graduate college, and that's both depressing and weirdly comforting.

128. She is pretty fierce. The "Single Ladies" video made me accept that she's one hot mama, as much as she bugs me.

133. There's a theatre footwear community?! This places amazes me every day! (You know...the internetz.)

138. That would be interesting...but it would make me cry because I worry about him. :\

140. OMG!!1 No, OK, seriously, it does take a few read-throughs, I'd say. And I'm not even a huge, long-term maniacal fan, but I'm gonna defend it and say that it takes a few times of reading it to sort of get the flow of the story and to understand the characters, and then it starts being extra-awesome.

145. I was just thinking about being her for Halloween. ;) And I take Halloween really really srsly, so that's saying a lot.

155. ...I know this isn't about me because I've never asked anyone to beta, and yet this kind of thing just strikes paranoid fear into my heart because it might be for me someday or...something. Is it just me, or is realizing/finding out that your characters are Sues the worst possible thing that can happen to a writer? D:

158. Oh, it's hot and everyone knows it. They had a kiss in A New Hope, originally!! I think. Well, whatever, I've seen icons and that's good enough for me.

164. False. And you seriously thought the "faggot" bit was going to fly here? Yeah, that's a big fail.

When I read the epilogue and read that Draco's kid was called Scorpius I had an image of Draco seeing off a Mini-Scorpius from Farscape in my head.

The epilogue mostly sucked IMO, both Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione were still together 17 (it was 17, wasn't it?) years later, because everyone in the world ends up marrying their teenage sweetheart and stays together until they're old and gray and dead.

I think one of those couples shouldn't have lasted to the epilogue. Twould have been funny if the epilogue had Harry and Luna together and seeing off their kids.

The amount of bawwwing on imdb.com that Ron hadn't named one of his kids after Fred (hmmmmm, I think Fred's twin George would have something to say about that, anyway JK revealed that George did indeed name his son after Fred)

I hear you! I got mine at 28 and only because people around me pretty much forced it on me. It doesn't change the fact that I still hate driving and refuse to even think about getting a car. Honestly, it was a waste of money and of my nerves to go through with it. Plus I'm more than fine with public transportation and I like to walk (an ability that some people seem to forget ;))

Re: 160

[identity profile] darknyss.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I got my license when I turned 30, mostly because my family was pushing me into it to 'take responsability and grow up'.
I was fairly content having public transport schlepp me around the world. And where transport failed, there were always the walking. I was assured I would either be the asshole driver or the pussy grandmother shuffle.
Then, I drove - license in hand fluttering in the summer breeze - I drove I drove and I fell in love. Still now, the act of motoring a 500kg beast of armour and explosive gasses down the highway (or, you know, negotiationg rush hour) fills me with ineffable joy.
I LOVE to drive, waiting all these years has only made the enjoyment that much sweeter.
Glory be the road trip.

But I'm glad I waited until I was ready.

140 - I really liked it, but I won't disagree, there were points where it was a bit of a yawn fest. XP I felt the same way about Dark Knight Returns, to be honest-- I understand that at the time it was groundbreaking, but now it's like "seen it".

144 - "I assume you're an idiot for not getting into it"? Way to be an asshat much. XP Just because I don't give a rip if Obama and Biden are blowing each other, it doesn't make me an idiot.

156. I agree.

And, as much as it pains me to say this, I don't follow the Bedchel test either. Otherwise I would miss out on a ton of amazing movies. And frankly, modern movies don't have really interesting female characters that flow in the style of movies that I so love. Movies like Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, Salton Sea, Amadeus, Saving Private Ryan, Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang (Though I do love Harmony.) The only exception are the characters of Tarantino. God, I love his female characters. In fact, the last movie that I saw that I loved the female character it turned out that she wasn't a she at all. (Let the right one in.)

That's not to say I look down my nose at female characters in general. I love the female characters of old movies. Any female character on TCM beats the pants off of anything that is in theaters now.

Honestly, where are our modern Norma Desmonds (Sunset Blvd), Maudes (Harold and Maudes), Sugar Kanes (Some like it Hot), Baby Janes (Whatever happened to Baby Jane?) and Nurse Ratcheds (One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest)?

Think about your favorite female movie characters, how many of them are modern ones?

Re: 156

(Anonymous) 2009-03-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not meant as a "don't watch it", it's meant as a commentary on how poorly modern female characters are characterized, as compared to male characters. There is no reason why there shouldn't be as many female/female conversations as male/male.

Hope this helps.

I don't pretend to have any insight into the situation, but I wonder how you (and if) you do, to base your "fact" upon. Because I haven't seen Ryan deny anything. And while miscommunications happen all the time, if it was as simple as misreading a text, it seems likely that it would have been resolved. Also, you lose credibility hugely for using the word ho.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. Even if you argue that Mr. Weasley wasn't enough of a father figure to Harry (Sirius and Lupin weren't the greatest, and I tend to see Dumbledore as a mentor more than a father), and expression comes to mind. "You can become the thing you lack." People who have had their hearts broken often become great lovers, but they know firsthand what's really important in a relationship. Similarly, Harry has desperately wanted a father, and it was something very important to him. He understands what a child needs in a parent, and would no doubt keep that in mind as he raises a family.

102 That does give it somewhat of a sentai aspect...

108 Actually, it's more like I hate the Wachowskis and refuse to see any movie they've made since the second Matrix. So there.

140 Don't feel bad. I read Watchmen years ago and while I appreciate it for being a revolutionary look at the superhero genre, the story feels slightly misogynist and definitely too conservative for me to consider it the "BEST COMIC EVAR." It's still pretty good, though. It's definitely something everyone should read at least once.

150 Sorry, I'm too busy laughing at the fact that people actually think Firefly is better than all other sci-fi/space operas. I haven't watched much of it, but it seemed pretty lacking in serious social/political/ethical themes, which is what makes good science fiction in my opinion.

156 It would help if, you know, people could raise these sorts of issues without being a total caustic asshole about it. I honestly think it wouldn't bother you as much.

156. without being a total caustic asshole about it.

Ohhh, this. Online, people really seem to get more aggressive about it and things turn into fights much more quickly and easily. Not that aggression is a bad thing -- it's effective for some people. But offline, people seem to do it a little less. I think they gauge their audience a bit better. I know that I'm actually much more likely to bring up these sorts of things offline because it's easier to convey my point. People can read my expressions and tell that I'm not angry or trying to be a bitch -- I'm just firm in what I believe. And it's easier to kind of drop a topic and be all "Well, let's just go get coffee, ya?" if you can see it's not going so well. Plus, there's fewer anonymous trolls offline ;D
