156) Tough shit you poor baby, just because you are "sick" of hearing about it doesn't mean it doesn't stop affecting people. These issues in our media are far far more relevant and interesting than plotbunnies for your new slash self-insert crossover fanfic. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yea, I am white conservative and straight and if I can "get" it without crying about being lumped in as an oppressor, then so can you....goddamn I am sick of entitled babies with no sense of context or history. How do you get dressed in the morning?

137. I feel the same way, but I'd rather hear it as an anonymous secret than as an lj post with a name attached.

141. That's really sweet. I bet you made her happy, too.

156. The thing is, a work can have problems with discriminatory overtones and still be good and worthy of fans. It's important not to take it personally--you can say, for example, "yes, my favorite series has problems with sexism, but it's funny and well-written and it resonates with me," and then you get to enjoy your show and be more conscientious. You are not oppressing people just for liking it ("it" being the canon, not the sexism or whatever, obviously), and if someone thinks you are, they're not worthy of your time. Also, I know the whole situation is frustrating, but I hope you don't really mean the thing about being okay with the patriarchy. I mean, seriously? You're okay with the idea of having fewer opportunities in life (I'm assuming you're female, here) because a man who is no smarter, better-educated, or hardworking than you wants them for himself? Surely not.

[identity profile] khandreia.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
102. Well, the sentai/Power Rangers-type concept in Gundam has been around for quite a long time, going back to G Gundam (which borrowed heavily from super robot shows and classic sentai series like JAKQ Dengekitai from the late '70s) 15 years ago, and gaining immense popularity with Gundam Wing. So it shouldn't come as much surprise that the concept is still around today; if it's successful, why not keep using it? [/PR and Gundam geek]

134. I'm a little disappointed that there's been so little response to this so far, because I can relate in a way, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. My situation is quite different from yours (for me, it was bullying/harassment and low self-esteem as a result, as well as being autistic), but I know what it's like to be very much fixated on a particular character and build a world and story for them and then disappear into it because it's so much better than the real world.

Don't ever give up on it, I say, and ignore the haters. You shouldn't sacrifice your peace of mind for the sake of a handful of people who revel in making fun of such a thing.

134 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Made me crack a few tears. I was bullied/harassed too... and he helped me cope with that through out school as well, and I graduated in '02. And he's still here, in my head verse/imagination. Probably the best coping mechanism even after spending a grand in therapy. Almost a decade after the fact. And I'm never giving it up.

then disappear into it because it's so much better than the real world.
This.

117. I don't know... What we saw of him with Al was already a better display of parenting than Ron gave off. I think Ron's going to be an irritating parent who keeps reliving the glory of his school years and lives through his kids' experiences. But back to Harry. Harry's treatment of Al at the station was remarkably mature and balanced.

I think Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were a big enough influence on him for a long enough period of time (and let's face it, the period of his life they became involved in was at the threshold and endured through the period many people have the most trouble with) that he'll be able to cope well enough with his own kids. And remember, he's not alone in the parenting endeavour; he has Ginny, who has more than enough family experience to go around.

Besides, since entering Hogwarts, despite the perils and tragedies he experienced, he suddenly found himself surrounded by more positive influences in that one place than he'd experienced all his life up to that point. He had McGonagall for seven years who provided the fair discipline he'd need to learn; Dumbledore who, regardless of my personal dislike of him, was a compassionate influence; his first friends; obviously the Weasleys; and more recently, the most loyal DA members. It almost did take a village to raise Harry at that point in his life, but I think that was more than enough to guide him through the hardest years of his life.

I think he'll do all right; after all, seeing his brief interaction with his kids was what actually made me proud of him: he didn't seem to let all the bad that had happened foul up his outlook.

158. I found it odd that the thought never crossed my mind when I was younger. I actually thought of it only recently.

129. Dude, what is he from? He's hot.

134. OP, if it works for you, I don't think you should be ashamed. So long as your liking the character doesn't cause other problems for you, there's nothing wrong with it.

143. You should get help. Trying to become that thin is physically impossible. But I can relate on cafeteria food sucking... I lost a lot of weight the semester I lived on campus due to that.

156. I'm with you on the "why does this need to be a competition" paragraph. So with you. By drawing lines, we're just diving ourselves even more. We're all humans, when it comes down to it. But the rest that I agree with, I wouldn't say logged in. I really don't want to deal with wank today.

164. Well damn, you sure schooled us.

144. I am so tempted to join this fandom, largely because my friends are getting increasingly bored of listening to me

159. OOH A SOOMPI SEKRIT.. and yeah, it's kind of true. Which makes me glad I'm not a fan and stay out of the threads of DBSK/SuJu/etc because the fans are NUCKING FUTS all the time at times, no offense..

[identity profile] dalmasca.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHA!!!

I just go on soompi for the pictures. xD And they are fucking nuts, though I like to think I am fairly saaane...!!! But I liked SJ-M first, so maybe that's why.

You know I used to be just like you. I was a major lurker for years and never knew how to approach the people in fandom. But last year I said fuck it and just started commenting and interacting in the comms and I've never regretted it. And I can't write at all. ;)
So I guess what I want to say is don't worry about being right or wrong or "good enough" and join the fun! We won't bite.♥

113 - Maybe it's *because* he's so minor that fandom was able to use him as an empty canvas to paint something highly appealing to the fen. I know I tend to identify with him in the (small amount of) DN fic I've read.

123 - No. Austria would get bored with him in all of 10 seconds, then Hungary would smack him back to SF with her frying pan.

140 - As others have pointed out, it was revolutionary in the 80's. But it also depends on when you read it in your life. Before I read it I kept to X-Men (mostly for the R/R shipping) and occasionally caught cartoons. Watchmen caused me to open my eyes an see comics in a new light. Parts of it are corny, and it can be over hyped, but it's still important to me, and I think to the genre.

156 - A lot of what you're saying resonates with me. First off, I think some of us have forgotten that "fandom is fucking funny" or at least that it's supposed to be for fun. Usually I don't mind meta because it's just us fans trying to get deeper into and better understand that which we love, but some of the stuff lately has seemed more like we just want to prove how totally smart/informed/progressive we are without adding anything enjoyable to the pot. Same with the constant bickering over who is "more" privileged/oppressed. If you really cared then volunteer at a shelter, give money to charity or join a protest group. If you do, good on you, but that doesn't mean I care. Post that for people who do, like you're own journal, political journals, or a gosh-darn blog. When a poster tries to get people to read their thinly veiled political rants, it distracts from "real" fandom meta. B!secret 1: I agree. B!Secret 2: I don't really understand what you're saying, but it makes me worry you're a troll. I hope I'm wrong; I'd feel really alone.

I already agree (though I hadn't thought of it in that way, and now that I've seen it, I cannot unsee it, and I wouldn't want to even if I could ;P), so this is pretty much a shout out of support, anon. Hopefully in the upcoming season we'll see the both of them again and it'll inspire more of this pairing! Then again, I'm a cheater and enjoy anything that has to do with Blackarachnia.

Hey, at least you gave it a shot.

Truth be told, most people, even ones who liked it, didn't "get it" on their first read. It takes god knows how many reads to absorb all the details and understand why they're there, and even then there's still many things left deliberately ambiguous and up for interpretation.

108, 164

(Anonymous) 2009-03-02 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
108. Um, overreacting much?

164. No. Because there are plenty of unpublished authors out there who write better than the tripe that some long-published trashy novelists churn out. Thanks for playing.
