I agree with the OP and am kind of amused by how many comments seem to think that it is saying slash is anti-feminist. Not feminist=/=anti-feminist.

Quite frankly I get dismayed when I see meta about all the wonderful, feminist and intellectually complex merits of slash because I write het, pretty much exclusively. I write about the female characters they think are such hollow products of the "patriarchy." It makes me wonder if they think het is less meaningful, intellectual, and feminist than slash.

Yeah, I don't get it. I'm not sure I agree with the secret, but it's not saying slash is misogynist. It recognizes slash fans can be feminists. It's just... not endorsing the idea that slash is itself feminist. :/

That said--I think good het can definitely be feminist. (And for my experience, the best het usually is, but I'm biased.)

159. I think it's a shame you feel this has to be a secret. I mean, I like Sparrow most of the time but he has moments that I can't even forgive with "well, that's what he's like...pirate!" - I don't think anyone is supposed to love him 100% but I also understand what it's like to like everything about a film apart from the main character.

Basically, I know very well that there are many GOOD reasons to justify not liking Sparrow and it is a shame if people make you feel bad about it.

I'm not the OP, and I never have hidden the fact that I don't like Sparrow- but I understand why he/she does. I used to get a lot of flak from the Johnny Depp fangirls because I didn't like Jack. (The Jack fangirls I hang out with are pretty good and understanding about it. Some of the others are really bad.)

And I consider Will and Elizabeth to be more important to the plot then Jack so... *shrug*

I still believe in a theory I heard once. Eragon is a self insert, that's obvious now. Murtagh is based on some guy he disliked or didn't get along with, probably some guy who was "hot and popular". Arya is probably based off some hot girl he had (or has) a crush on, but he never got together with.

That's all just hearsay and speculation, but it would explain quite a few things, yes?

In my opinion, we Americans tend not to get a whole lot of exposure to "foreign" films anyway (unless you go to your local "foreign film theatre").

And to everybody who might be reading, one of my hobbies is watching foreign films (mostly downloaded from the Internet, bad self!), subtitles and all, but tend to keep quiet about it (on- or off-line) to avoid accusations of elitism (OMG you read the subtitles /and/ watch the movie?!).

117. I am sure you are getting a lot of flack, but I agree with the sentiment behind this secret. Same goes with het or femslash. Neither of those are in and of themselves feminist or anti-feminist. They exist in a neutral ground, it is what specific people do with each of them that may be feminist or not. But none of them, nor is gen focused on female characters is inherently feminist on their own.

Truth be told that slash itself is in itself neither feminist nor anti-feminist, however, I am going to say that you are exactly right about that argument about better female characters. If that is such a big thing for you then maybe you need to look at different canons.

Yes, you should regret it, because no matter what, who CARES what other people think you are? What matters is what YOU think about yourself. I'm taking Japanese, and yes I originally got into the language and culture because of Anime, but I don't care! The point is, I'm actually LEARNING A WHOLE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE and one day I will be bi-lingual. If that makes me a weeaboo, it's not going to affect me one way or the other.

Murtagh is the [b]ONLY[/b] reason why I read his books. If he kills off Murtagh I am going to be livid. It's not Murtagh's fault that he's 'evil'.
