109 - wow, that is a REALLY pathetic reason to deprive yourself of an awesome show (and an awesome fandom). Oh well. More cracktastic dragon!slash for us.

139 - ...me too. *shallow gnimmy is shallow* oh dear. But I would totally read smut of them. Just because - um - Freema Agyeman? And Jamie Bamber? I picture them naked SEPERATELY all the time anyway. XP

Oooo harsh. Wouldn't deprive myself of the entire King Arthur myth fandom, just not this particular Merlin fandom. And no, couldn't be bothered with the show now, either.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
117. ...I'm confused. How can something that has nothing to do with women be feminist? Am I totally reading this wrong or something?

[identity profile] ibroketuesday.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You're reading it right. The secret is saying that slashers who argue that slash is feminist are wrong. It's not inherently anti-feminist or feminist.

n!s3: I think he was still working through his issues in the 1980s, but Moore's Promethea is an amazing series with a nearly-all-female cast, three of whom are gay women.

117: Duh, it's not about the female characters, it's about the female audience. Writing things to turn other women on - both emotionally and sexually - and being part of a writing movement that caters to women in ways that canons do not dare to, is something I find more fulfilling in a feminist sense than almost anything else I've ever done. The way you've put it, f/f porn would be something other than misogynist, so, fail.

119: I WANT TO KISS YOU. Superb, bloody, fascinating, indifferent as if he were invulnerable -

(Anonymous) 2009-03-07 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
117. Now I really don't get it. Perhaps because I don't necessarily subscribe to the whole f/f porn = misogynist. Some of it is, some of it (especially those aimed at the lesbian and bi crowd) is not.

Fan fiction, in my experience, is largely directed at a female audience - be it gen, het, m/m, or f/f. Femslash also caters to women in ways canon doesn't dare to, and yet I don't see slashers raving about how feminist femslash is, because everyone seems too busy writing about a guy fucking another up the ass. Het can also be about breaking the boundaries of canon.

I just don't see how writing m/m automatically equals fulfillment as a feminism. I don't think it's wrong, and I don't think it's anti-feminist - except when a slasher says it's about feminism, then I go "lolWHUT?"

117. I like slash in large part because it keeps women out of the love interest role. I just think it's really sad that once that's taken away, society is so used to that being the default position that it's hard to find a place for them elsewhere.

Not that that should stop people from trying, just...like I said, it's refreshing to read something and know that girlA isn't going to fall in love with guyB because she has a vagina, and we all know that's the only role for a vagina to fulfill in a fictional narrative.

[identity profile] weallfallout.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)

I'm American, and sadly, I must agree with this secret. It saddens me how stupid (most) people in this country can be - and they're the ones upon whom other countries' impressions of us are based.

(I'll spare anecdotes, to avoid wandering off topic.)

And by this rant, I don't mean "America = fail", I mean "fellow Americans, you can do better...right?"

119. Why hello there, Enjolras/Grantaire. How are you doing today? A few comments:
-Hugo gives no physical description of R aside from saying that he's ugly. You could only make an argument for him being morally, not physically, "small" and "weak."
-Hugo likes dealing in superhumans and archetypes. He can get away with "stereotypical" characters, but someone looking for more realistic individuals in a more realistic fandom probably has different standards.
-Why does this need to be a secret? Would your friends really be so incensed by your intended point?

145. You. You are a winner.

Re: 119, 145

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-03-08 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
119. Ahem. "He was frightfully ugly; the prettiest shoe-binder of that period, Irma Boissy, revolting at his ugliness, had uttered this sentence: "Grantaire is impossible," but Grantaire's self-conceit was not disconcerted."
AND
"rantaire admired, loved, and venerated Enjolras. To whom did this anarchical doubter ally himself in this phalanx of absolute minds? To the most absolute. In what way did Enjolras subjugate him? By ideas? No. Through character. A phenomenon often seen..The dwarf adores the drum major....Grantaire, crawling with doubt, loved to see faith soaring in Enjolras. He needed Enjolras. Without understanding it clearly, and without trying to explain it to himself, that chaste, healthy, firm, direct, hard, honest nature charmed him. Instinctively, he admired his opposite. His soft, wavering, disjointed, diseased, deformed ideas hitched onto Enjolras as a backbone. His moral spine leaned on that firmness."

The first one says R is ugly. The second is more about his morals, but you know Victor Hugo - the appearance is often the morals. Look at Enjolras!

*not the OP, but hey, fangirl is fangirl*

Though the OP does say that he/she prefers "accuracy to canon" to realism, which means he/she probably would agree for realism in a more realistic fandom, and is (my guess) just reacting to people who want realism in EVERYTHING...

101-Why is this a secret?

113-Easily the most interesting relationship in there.

115-This secret first confused me because I was like...uh, Harry never cheated on Ginny? When was she trusting him to be honest? But now I see, you don't like H/D including gleeful "punishment" of Ginny for existing by making her look like a fool. IAWTC.

116-So Yanks would ruin this movie by having it released within their borders? That's some power there!

127-It was a terrible thing.

128-::sigh:: I have such a soft spot for them, but I've come to think they just don't seem to make each other happy as a couple.:-( Still, boy do I love that picture.

135-It's funny because I love it this season but I don't know what's going on at all! I don't think it's lack of wanting to think that made people give it up, they just didn't enjoy it anymore.

143-WTF? People don't know who she is? I play episodes to myself in my head when I'm bored! Also, I just saw Lured and highly recommend it!

158-As good as this season is, I still miss Charlie.

116. Being American doesn't automatically mean that someone is stupid, anymore than being from any other country makes someone stupid. That being said, American executives do have a tendency to think that Americans can't watch foreign films, which REALLY doesn't help things. But it doesn't mean all Americans are stupid--just that the majority of execs seem to think we are.

143. ...Most of your RL friends have NO IDEA who Lucille Ball is??? SERIOUSLY? Or am I just going crazy and seeing that picture wrong? How do you not know what I Love Lucy is??

150. I'm still in love with that movie, and I wish it was coming out on DVD quickly enough for me to do my Intro to Film Arts final paper on it. But I think it's not. Drat.

108. Was he ever even seen outside of that one game? He wasn't seen much, anyway, I'd just pretend it was me with the camera :P
(On a side note, I still love playing it at hotels....I get all excited when I'm staying at a hotel and see that they have it, even though they usually drain my money for it....)

125. I remember one point in my life, where I basically lived in an empty dorm bunk along the edge of the campus....didn't have anything to do, most classes were over, and for a while, there was no one to talk to, either....and THAT hour was the highlight of every night :)

127. I only found out yesterday. How long has it been gone? I didn't even lurk there, just checked it every now and then...ack, still gonna miss it :/

131. Me too! I remember the first time I submitted a bulk of secrets....that was one exciting week. :P

165. Hah, I am embarrassed to admit that I still find it cute :D

108. He briefly travelled with Ash's group in the anime.

For some inexplicable reason, they changed his name to Snap. I think it's officially Todd Snap now.

103. Best adaptation of Wuthering Heights, y/y?
117. I think you can enjoy non-feminist works, while recognizing their faults, without betraying feminism. I am confused by people saying (m/m) slash is feminist, though--do people actually make that argument? I don't think slash is anti-feminist, though, and I don't think that shipping male characters means you're "agreeing that men are better and more important than women."
119. Hell yeah, Enjolras/Grantaire!
120. I'd be more excited about Sherlock Holmes if I thought they were sticking closer to the actual canon, or at least the feel of canon. I'll certainly see it, though.
127. I was just going back through the archives, after not looking at the comm in forever, when it died. I was not happy. :(
159. The monkey's awesome. And I don't usually care for monkeys.

119. Ah, Enjolras. *sigh*

149. HELL YES. I can totally see that happening!

150. Agreed. Also, the OST is great to dance to.

So? I like .hack//SIGN and most anime fans think it's boring as all hell. Also? Kinda dumb to bash the fans when they show they aren't batshit insane. Moron.

160. Ah, I don't even like Naruto anymore, but when I did, I was a rabid KibaHina fan. Even now, I can't even begin to understand how people can take NaruHina seriously.

170. I'm with you on that one. Damn you NPH, for being over twice my age, gay, and in a committed relationshsip. Damn you. /shakes fist
