Wow, I had this exact reaction in a discussion about another secret about slash a couple of days ago.

AMEN, (figurative) SISTER.

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
112. It's not bad if you want to read about fictional relationships inspired by your real life problems. It's only bad if you start expecting your friend to stay dependant on you. Or if you, you know, start threatening and manipulating your friend in to getting your way like the real Franziska. XD

142 (Serial Experiments Lain)

(Anonymous) 2009-03-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I did take away a "deeper meaning" from this series (or at least I think I did...it's all up to personal interpretation), but I wouldn't insult others for not finding any particular meaning in this show.

OP, it works both ways.

XDD When I started taking Japanese (purely out of linguistic interest) I'd seen all of one anime and read half a manga series in my entire life (not counting, you know, Pokemon and Dragonball as a kid). But now that I am into anime I spend half my life angsting over people thinking I'm a weeabo. Starting to get over it, though, because I really do enjoy the language. You should see if you can find classes somewhere!

103 - Actual book be damned, that sketch told me everything I needed to know about the story.

109 - Buddy, come on. There's not a chance in hell that a story set in historical settings would completely change their dialogue to adjust to the time period. That would make it uncomprehensible to 99% of the audience. And it was one slip, that doesn't speak for the rest of the series.

114 - Its strange that you wouldn't admit it, there's a ton of people who would know where you're coming from.

116 - What a viewpoint you have there. Being elitist doesn't make you an intellectual, and five bucks says it's a load of pretenious nonsense who is only worshipped by people too daft to know the difference.

119 - Stories are rarely realistic. The way the world works in real life is too boring to write a story about, half the time.

127 - when scans_daily was gone, a part of my soul died D:

143 - You either have a terrible relationship with your friends or you might just be obsessing to hard, there.

148 - NEVER BE AFRAID TO ADMIT YOU LIKE STAR TREK. I knew about Twitards before I even watched Star Trek, but I figured that there's nothing wrong with admitting I love a show as long as I don't represent the worst of the fandom.

163 - I love seeing hockey secrets. I just support hockey slash because the pun opportunities are ENDLESS.

164 - Pff, tell me about it.

[identity profile] gnimaerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it kind of does. Merlin eats SANDWHICHES, for god's sake.

What I don't get is all the fuss over 'historical accuracy' in this show anyway. HELLO? They didn't exactly have DRAGONS or MAGIC in the dark ages either. Merlin is a composite of vaguely-historical-come-high-fantasy-middle-english settings. What does the OP WANT? For it all to be in middle English? If it were THAT authentic no one but English Lit. geeks like me would be able to understand a WORD of the dialogue!

I read it SOLELY for the butt-sex. ;D WHAT IS WRONG WITH PORN FOR THE SAKE OF PORN? Does everything have to be an epic fucking Jane Austin novel for you?

Harrr. Yay PORN!

Re: 105.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-07 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it is deceptive porn! It has this big elaborate backdrop that hints at some sort of plot and then it just pulls it out from under you and goes "LOL! There's not plot here stupid! Just buttsex!"

If it was just buttsex for buttsex's sake, that'd be fine. But it's parading around as something else and then getting butthurt when it's called on the fact that it's just buttsex.

107 I'm not sure finding him hot is required.

115 There used to be fics where Ginny cheats on Harry with Draco, or, Harry's kind of an asshole and Ginny leaves him and ends up with Draco. Ah, how the worm has turned.

117 Or blatantly rewrite the women. If you wish that they had been better as characters, perhaps writing a story that explores that could be interesting, instead of abandoning them for the men.

120 Grammar is your friend. Also, Watchmen is not the be all and end all of the known universe.

135 I have a long attention span, so I see what you're saying. But sometimes people stop watching things not because they're fickle or have short attention spans or saw something shiny, but because the canon moved in a direction they didn't like. I'm tired of those people being portrayed as "bad fans" as though the only good fan is one that walks lockstep with the creators. I consider those people to be, sometimes, merely lucky fans.

143 Your RL friends are idiots. She's on TV every five minutes. How can they not know who she is? She's a LEGEND! And because of that, she still lives. (ps, find her films—they're great!)

146 I believe that isn't a slash ship, so RPF—but whatever with those RPF haters. They're tiresome.

157 Tell me about it. Fandoms can be great, or they can break your heart, and sometimes it's better to just avoid them.

163 Sports RPS makes me all happy inside, seriously.

171 From someone who constantly has to remind herself of this: you can't do or not do things based on what a bunch of judgmental haters would think. Half of them will hate you for some other arbitrary reason anyway. Which sucks? But there it is.

117. IASFM. I have no problem with people slashing. Some people get off at the idea of two men together, and I could get behind that too. But I don't get how it can be feminist.

How does pushing well-written female characters to the background so you can fangirl over how two guys are totally hot for each other, regardless of canon, equal feminism? And yes, I am aware that not every show or fandom has well-written female characters, and I don't expect every feminist to be forced to like a het pairing, or even a femslash pairing, but it's the moral high ground that slashers walk on that pisses me off.

There are several well-written female characters out there to be explored. And yet, slashers I've seen ranting about how slash is feminist, say there aren't. So, are those slashers' standards for women just completely out of reach? Because if none of the women in the fandoms slash is popular are "strong" enough, then I think slashers need to re-evaluate what being a strong woman in a post-feminist world is.

112. Sometimes people like to read about their own issues in romanticized, fictional form. It happens. To me.

117. Wait, what? I'm confused. You can be feminist and a slash fan, but you're a bad feminist if you slash?

[identity profile] chairman-wow.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
re: 117, I think they're saying slash does not intrinsically give you feminist awesome points, or something like that? I've never come across these slash fans who claim that it does, seems a bit silly to go around bashing and/or ignoring female characters and claiming it makes you a feminist. (Not that all slahsers are female-bashers, obviously.)
