132: Watchmen is a very complex and multi-layered story. Nobody "gets" all of it on the first reading. I've read it a good half-dozen times and every time I go back to it, I find something new.

149: I am so sick of the notion that having differing preferences in different contexts makes you a hypocrite. Because you're not. To say "slash is sick!" and fap to it in secret is hypocritical; to like slash in one fandom and dislike it in another is just normal human variability.

157: But Bob's married! (she said, forgetting that nothing like that has ever stopped fandom...) Anyway, much though I like Bob and Weasel, I think saying that they're more interesting than GI Jesus and the Merc with the Mouth is a stretch.

158: The problem with this secret is that people do care. If you want to argue that they shouldn't, go ahead and I'll cheerlead, but claiming that they don't is fucking stupid. OF COURSE THEY FUCKING CARE. That's why the flame wars get started in the first place!

I was going to say something about shipping for character dynamics and how I have both het and slash OTPs yadda yadda, but then I read the secret again, and the word 'squick' stood out. You have a couple slash OTPs, but elsewhere slash squicks you. Is it the sex that you don't like (and if so, do you prefer fanfic about your m/m ships to not be explicit?) or is it pairing two men when you don't ship them that squicks you?

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. It's because of the characters - I can see how they can be slashed but it gives me the willies when they are. I can take other pairings in fandoms I slash in that I don't ship just fine but it seems to be entire fandoms I just can't slash with.

*sighs* You know, I think I see your problem. You think fandom isn't real because the stuff people are fans of is fictional. But, you see, media is real, even if the events portrayed aren't. There's a real story there, and it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

What's more, real people make up fandom. Real people who have real feelings. No, I'm not so much into the "your kinks are wrong" crowd, but there is a reason we tend to warn for things that other people might not want to be surprised by, particularly if they're potentially triggering. That saves us all time and energy. And if fandom is constantly bashing female characters, it does create a hostile environment for the real female human beings who are involved in fandom, as well as perpetuating and normalizing attitudes that hurt real women.

Maybe you're not interested in those discussions. Hey. Good for you. I'm sure your scroll bar works. But the idea that fandom isn't real, or should never ever entertain serious business is limiting, damaging, and frankly just stupid.

I'm not so bitter towards Johnny Depp and his hordes of fangirls, but I wouldn't want to see him in a Good Omens movie. Even if it's really just for the fact that I probably won't even see Crowley, I'll just see Johnny Depp. And whoever that is isn't cuddly looking enough to be Aziraphale (in my opinion).
