Libby exists...at least support your local library.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Overdrive also works reasonably well. I live in Hong Kong and use it through a library account my sister made while she was living in Chicago. And only because I managed to lose my login to my old NYPL account.

i really don't think there is anything gained from poor people denying themselves pleasure in life to maintain some vague idea of moral purity

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean as long as they're using library services etc for the book, and if streaming services keep offering free trials why not use them?

But downloading book rips especially from indie authors is one thing I can't support.

I don't even have time to read the few books I buy or watch all the shows on the one streaming service I pay for. There's altogether way too much content available and we're busier than ever just trying to get by. Who are these poor people who just HAVE to have the thing no matter how obscure?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't see anything wrong with this and I don't understand why you'd feel bad about it. If the book isn't available at my library or through Libby, I just don't read it. I don't want to buy a book based on the summary and then end up hating it and feeling like I wasted my money. That being said, have you tried NetGalley for free books, OP?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not clear what they mean by "free library service" to me; if they mean Libby, then they definitely shouldn't feel bad under any possible scenario.

oh and dont forget the Internet Archive! they're especially good for academic texts and other nonfiction, if thats what you're into.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you should have to feel so guilty for not paying for things you want to consume. This is a byproduct of capitalism. Being poor shouldn't be a reason as to why you can't have access to books or movies or tv shows or music, etc. We need art to enjoy life and want to keep living life is to enjoy it! Art is important. Please try your best to remember that you alone not paying for the things you consume isn't going to hurt anyone. I mean, I do enjoy purchasing things for fandoms when I can afford it but I've been poor enough that I could barely pay my phone bills, and I would download music and burn CDs at a friends' house. Print fanfics at the library so I can read them when my phone had no service or I was at home where we didn't always have access to the internet. Got books, magazines, DVDs and CDs from the library <3

OH! And there was this Asian general store where they sold bootleg DVDs of new theatre releases! Once bought "Gone Girl" the weekend after it came out in theatres for $3. My brother got that "X-Men First Class Wolverine" bootleg with the unfinished graphics and stunts for I think the same price the weekend that movie came out. I remember thinking the ending was so bad that I was like, "No. This can't be the real ending right? Because it's REALLY bad." LOL

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You know who else is broke AF? A lot of authors, because a lot of people seem to think they don't deserve to get paid.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying libraries are bad? Because that's... A take.

I tried to use the look inside thing on amazon yesterday and it didn't work

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Libraries exist and are free. I mean, I get this when it comes to movies, tv, or music. Yes, libraries have some of them , but much less so. But most books are accessible either physically or electronically through libraries.

Why do it an illegal way when you can do it a legal way?

(Anonymous) 2022-06-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg USE. THE. LIBRARY. It's a win/win - authors get recognition (and libraries buying their books), the library gets funding based on how many people use it, and so the library can get more books and provide more services.

That's what libraries are *for* though.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I think it’s fairly common for people who actually can afford things to use “I’m just too broke to afford it” as an excuse to not pay for something when they can get away with it. Which sucks.

On the other hand, another thing that is sadly common is fucking poverty. So if someone really is scraping by with little to no disposable income, then I don’t personally have any issue with them getting their media for free however they can--though I would argue that their local library should be their first resource, especially for written works.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hey OP - just checking, you know you can put in requests for books at the library? As in, you fill out a form and they will try to buy it.

Not being facetious here - librarians love it when patrons give them some indication of what they want to see, and the author wins too.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Does your public library offer ebooks? Mine does, and it's a ridiculously straightforward process to get the books on your phone. You don't get to keep them but at least you don't need to waste energy trying to find a way to access them.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I could afford to buy books but I don't because I have no need to own them. I use the local library and if it doesn't have something either as a paper book or an e-book, I just don't read it.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Who knew so many anons had a thing for libraries. Or is F!S full of indie authors?

Anyway, I'm still going to pirate and not give a fuck about it ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ I suggest you do the same, OP.

Just skimmed through some of the awsers above me and... really, guys?
Not everyone lives in America and has access to English books in their public library. Not every English indie book available is translated and available in countries outside USA/UK etc. Even Libby, it's not available in every country. Why do I even have to point this out this is beyond me.
Some of you people have to check you priviledge.
Piracy is the greatest equalizer in accessing EVERY for of enterntainment from every part of the world.

I say this as someone who has used their public library since they were a little child. My public library does have a very limited selection of books in English and it's usually books aimed at kids/teenagers. I'm interested in books about mental illness and social/gender studies. I don't have access to Libby and other services like that and I'm NOT going to pay 20+ USD + very expensive international shipping + custom fees on a book just because someone thinks that it's not "moral" to pirate content.

Also, I lived both below and above the poverty line. Enterntainment and especially books (or retro gaming) are the things that kept me alive and going.

Fucking stop policing piracy on your "moral" standards. You know nothing about accessibility.

I'm going to pirate an indie book IF I WANT IT. Maybe I will write a good review about it on Goodreads so you people that can grab it for free at the public library or you people that can afford it can buy it. Or maybe not because I'm lazy and I pirate just because I can.
How about that? Is it OK for you? Not enough? IDGAF

OP, don't feel guilty. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. No shame in pirating any kind of media, EVER.
If and when you'll be able to afford the books that make you happy and you still feel bad about pirating them, just invest in a bookshelf and collect the books that you loved the most. :)

Wow, the sheer entitlement in this thread.

No one is OWED the fruits of anyone else's labor. Pirate or don't, but don't act like you're entitled to something for free just because you want it.

(Anonymous) 2022-06-30 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don’t have much to say about the secret, other than you do you, OP.

But it’s kind of funny to me that this secret thread has so many different opinions, and yet some people keep generalizing the entire thread as just being one unanimous opinion just because that one opinion was shared by a couple of people. Like the two posts above me have competing conflicting views on what the entire thread is like. One says the thread is full of privilege because a couple of people suggest using libraries more and recommend related things like Libby. One says the thread is full of entitlement to the fruits of people’s labor, when only a couple of people said anything close to expressing something kind of like that, or just because they portrayed piracy as neutral or beneficial to people in non-American countries, instead of portraying pirating as always bad. These views have a lot more grey areas, first off. And second, these views don’t come close to dominating the whole secret thread.

This isn’t relevant to anything, I just thought it was weird to generalize the thread this way.

Pirating has definitely greatly benefitted me in the past. Media from America and Japan was always very scattershot in what came to my country. Even media from other European countries weren’t always reliably brought over. Even learning English instead of relying on translations didn’t help with actually getting to read and watch so many things.

Streaming helped with a lot. But region locking was a problem before VPNs were something I had heard of.

So I’m probably very lax about pirating as a result. Even if I did sometimes feel bad. And I almost never pirate anything anymore. But I still don’t judge.

I still always tried to buy the things I liked after I had already watched/read/played/listened to them to support the creators. But my monetary situation isn’t the same as everyone else. And not everyone can afford to but things that aren’t necessities. Much less would consider it necessary to buy it after they already pirated it.
