Apparently the actress identifies as Hispanic and white. But I nevertheless agree that this is terrible casting, and than an many Asian actresses (Japanese, for instance) could have fit the fairy-talke description of Snow much better.

But also, literally no one is asking for these live action remakes. That's my biggest objection to any of them.

And they keep trying to fix what isn't broken, which just drags the whole thing down. I don't need my fairy tale movies to make perfect sense. I need my fairy tale movies to be bright colorful flights of fancy with fun musical numbers where the cast is clearly having fun.

I can’t believe they’re still churning these live action remakes out tbh. No one wanted them, they don’t perform well at the box office, and they don’t do anything to increase Disney Plus subscriptions. It’s very weird to me that they haven’t given up making these.

The ones that really confuse me are the ones like The Jungle Book, where pretty much everything but Mowgli was computer animation. I actually enjoyed that one (I wasn't tired of the whole idea yet) but I struggle to think of that one as "live action."

Anime is not a good indicator of normal Japanese skin color, FYI. Jdramas are closer, if you pay attention to the minor characters and not just the leads, who tend to be cast in part because they're very light-skinned by normal standards.

She doesn't "identify as." She *is* Hispanic and white. Her mother is Colombian; her father is Polish. Neither of those things disqualify her from playing either of the two most famous characters she's been cast as so far.

To be clear, I do think any colour combination that vaguely fits the "white as snow, black as ebony, red as blood" description would have worked - a very dark skinned black woman with white hair would have been just fine as well.
The main thing is: Sure, the basis of this is kind of a weird beauty standard thing. But that's basically the whole damn plot of Snow White - the whole story hinges on some jealous woman wanting to kill her stepdaughter for being prettier than her. So if a story that is primarily about beauty standards and the creepy lengths some women go to for being prettier than others offends you so much, maybe Snow White is not the fairytale to adapt.

There's only one actual little person in their ranks which kinda pissed off a lot of the little people actors (they mainly blame Peter Dinklage because he went on a rant how casting little people as dwarves is discrimination and Disney listened, costing 6 other little people a much needed job).
The rest are assorted people from "all genders and backgrounds".

bad live action remakes of cartoons made by people who don't understand the source material seem to have started with that godawful Popeye movie Robin Williams wasted his time and talent in.

In that very image of her side by side with the original cartoon version, you can see their skin is pretty much the same shade.

Saying she should be Asian because (implied) Asians are the only POC with the right skin color to be Snow White is pretty racist itself, including racist against Asians.

Personally, I just want the movie where they take Snow White's whole color scheme to its logical conclusion and make her a vampire.

I'm mad because Snow White is awesome and they're going to make it all a "commentary" on the original and leave out all of that cool German Expressionism shit.

Christ. They're going to have a scene where SW and the Prince meet beforehand and she explicitly tells him she wants to be kissed while asleep. Or something. One of the dwarves will have a rap solo. SW will teach the dwarves to clean instead of getting help from animal companions. No one will demand the severed heart of a little girl -_-

I just think it's incredibly disingenuous how people couldn't stop complaining about Rachel Zegler being too white to play Maria in West Side Story, but now she's too brown to play Snow White. It's almost like mixed people cannot fucking win.

TBH this makes me wonder if we obsess too much about looks? Maybe that's why I have a difficult time interacting with these live action Disney princess adaptations. =[

Like, do we even really need a Snow White adaptation? Does it need to also have a diverse casting of some kind, especially for the leading lady?

Parts of me want to talk about it, but I wonder if participating in discussions on a woman's looks associating with her job, how much should the original fairy tale stay part of the new interpretation which includes talking about what "snow white" means, and also diversifying media feeds more into a looks-focused society or if my lack of participation is leading these discussions into places that make me uncomfortable?

Sorry for the rant. I always feel really at odds with wanting to discuss the evolution of popular media and also not wanting to participate in mindless agreement with the systemic issues that generally are brushed aside.

Eh. The original concept art for the animated Snow White had her as a blonde, so clearly the integrity of "skin white as snow, hair black as ebony, lips red as blood" was an afterthought then, too.

I'm just glad that Zegler has already proven herself capable of both singing and acting, unlike Naomi Scott, who could not act, or Emma Watson, who could do NEITHER.
