1) That is adorkable. Keep your friend innocent. :3

5) While some people should probably watch what they cosplay (i.e. if you're 500lbs. don't wear a costume with a thong, and if you're a pencil then don't cosplay a sumo wrestler), generally it should be FUN. Not everyone is that perfect size 10 with big gravity-defying boobs either. If we had to be perfect to cosplay... well, very few would.

7) .... I don't get it, but I'm more of a yaoi fan anyway, so... *shrug* Whatever floats your boat.

8) I think everyone wishes that. ;) I know I do.

Yeah, you should definitely trying to pick a character and an outfit to compliment you regardless of weight and build. Really skinny people shouldn't cosplay certain characters, whereas those with a larger build shouldn't cosplay others. It's about fun, but people should make an effort to be as good as they can be at something. My only gripe with cosplay are the people who don't even try at all, they just grab stuff from their closet and toss it all together and call it cosplay. Effort counts more than anything and usually if you're going to take the time to put effort into something, you're not going to be selecting a character that you can't successfully pull off.

I don't intend to sound mean, but I wish the people who are borderline morbidly obese (or over) wouldn't cosplay scantily clad characters. They're not doing themselves any favours, and I always feel embarrassed on their behalf thinking that they're going to be mocked for it. If you love cosplaying the character that much, I don't know, maybe try to diet and exercise for a few weeks before dressing up for any cons...

Same goes for anorexic-looking stick thin people. I really don't want to see your grossly prominent ribs and hipbones, it's truly just as bad as those morbidly obese people. Wear a bodysuit for padding or something. ;_;

Conclusion: There ARE ways to help you cosplay better, no matter your body/face type, if you're willing to put forth a bit of effort.

Re: 5.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)

Exactly. People should choose a character that compliments them and if not do something to at least help them cosplay the character more convincingly. I don't care what your build is, just make an effort to do something well. All too often people who are ill suited to cosplay certain characters also skimp on effort.

I have a friend who should not crossplay because she does nothing to hide that she's a girl and doesn't care either. It goes for many aspects of cosplay outside of bodytype. While I'd never tell someone that they shouldn't cosplay a character unless I knew them and they asked me, I wish more people would put more effort into it. Some people put a lot of time and love into cosplay and it shows.

I'm very strict on my own cosplay, and while others are welcome to do what they want to, in order for me to have the most fun while cosplaying is to know that my effort paid off in the end.

Yes, it's for fun but I can't see what's so fun about later finding yourself being picked apart by a bunch of losers who just want to make fun of someone. It happens to even the best of cosplayers and while everyone tries to ignore it, it happens and it can sting.

Save yourself from these losers having a valid excuse and please take a little time to make an effort.

And may we please remember that Ninjas/Pirates/Ancient Chinese Warriors/Samurai/priestess etc.....DID NOT HAVE SATIN.

Satin is my ultimate WOE maker for cosplay.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)

1. That's so cute. I have a fandom friend who's first language is Spanish and she does the same thing whenever commenting on my fanart/fanfic. It doesn't make you a bad friend.

5. I think you should at least make an effort to cosplay a character you can pull off. I wouldn't cosplay say ... er ... some character that looked blatantly Asian or crossplay as a character that looked really really male regardless of how much I liked the character. Or if you do want to cosplay a character that you can't easily pull off, at least make a strong effort to make it convincing with makeup or whatever other techniques you might need. There are a lot of characters out there that I absolutely adore that I know I couldn't cosplay and therefore I won't. Luckily, a good deal of my favourite characters or extensions of my favourite characters fall into the sphere of what I'd feel confident cosplaying. Yes, it's first and foremost for fun, but there's also an element of wanting to be as convincing as possible. I have friends who cosplay who are every body type and build and we all work with it.

8. Hehe. Totally.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
5. *rolls eyes* It's costume play. The emphasis is supposed to be on the costume. Fine and good if you feel like limiting yourself, but I hope you don't ever try imposing the same incredibly stupid standard on others.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Have fun looking stupid in costume, then.

Some people have no taste or sense of style, and it carries over 100%.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)

I don't really care what others do, but personally I'm not going to make a fool out of myself by cosplaying a character I cannot pull off.

5.)I don't think her standards are stupid as you so implied. She has a very valid point. A lot of people don't ever take into consideration characters they that should cosplay because they look more like them because they're too interested in cosplaying what's popular or easy or a character they associate with. This mentality is what sets aside good cosplayers from the rest. It's not just costume play as you put it, it's a way of using both theirselves and the costume to properly portray a character. Sure if you want to look like every other cosplayer who doesn't seem to care then by all means don't set any cosplay standards. But whatever, you let this drop so I suppose now that I've spoken my mind I'll respect that.

[identity profile] shahrizai.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have a rule of thumb - if I want to cosplay someone from a series I like, I pick a character who I don't mind but who isn't my favorite. That way, if for some reason it just doesn't work out, my mind will not automatically relate that character to my cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
4. You're so not alone. ♥

5. I bet you're an ugly fatty who only posted this so others would disagree with it. You're going about getting your lame little ego boost assbackwards. Get over yourself.

8. Put some effort into it and you very well could. Become an artist/animator, write scripts/direct movies, whatever. I know it sounds cheesy, but if you practise enough to get good and stick with it, you'll catch a break eventually. I'm a good example: I work in the video game industry in a fairly "high end" position. It took over 10 years of dedication, I've been through some incredibly shitty lows, but hey, I made it. I now have my dream job. =)

9. Me too. Especially those fantards that devote entire "anti" shrines to characters they hate, and write those lolarious diatribes in their emo journals about how much they OMG HAET!!!111 so and so from whatever fandom. I personally think it's pretty damn sad when anyone obsesses over imaginary people to that degree... Become a politician or activist or something, do something useful with that passion instead of making yourself look like a flaming moron.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
5: Wow, way to jump to conclusions, and strange ones at that. Can't someone be a straight-up ass any more without people thinking they're somehow sideways searching for ego boosts? I don't need an ego boost. I'm arrogant enough to mean that secret. I wouldn't cosplay someone that looked nothing like me because I know I'd end up looking ridiculous, but some people do, and they look terrible.

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)

No. Everything here on the internet is SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS.

Forget Sparta, this is... THE INTARWEBS!

I agree with the OP though, bet you're ugly fatty! LOL!

1. D'AWW! That's adorable! X3

9. I have a question: There is a difference between hating a character because you find them annoying and whiny and hating a character so much OMG YOU WISH THEY WOULD DIE AND I'M GOING TO WRITE A FANFICTION WHERE THEY DIE. REPEATEDLY. Because I understand the former (even if they are fictional characters) but the latter is when I would start avoiding said hater. I just confused when people say they hate a character and wonder what they mean. :x

9

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind so much the former; it's the latter that bugs me. That or repeatedly saying "X IS A MARY SUE/GARY STU" when they really... aren't, and the person is just trying to justify their hate. If people say "I don't like so-and-so because ______," I'm more likely to take it respectfully than the "I CAN'T STAND SO AND SO BECAUSE THEY ARE A BITCH AND WHINY AND ALSO A MARY SUE AND THEY GET IN THE WAY OF MY PAIRING" and etc.

Re: 9

[identity profile] fuckyeah.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
See, that's more understandable. If you're going to hate someone, I would think would be calm and intelligent about it, express your hate quietly instead of making a big deal about it. Like so:

Person 1: I'm writing a Rinoa/Squall fanfiction, would you care to read it?
Person 2: Ehh, no thanks. I don't like Rinoa's character that much.
Person 1: Oh okay. :D

Instead of:
Person 1: I'm writing a Rinoa/Squall fanfiction, would you care to read it?
Person 3: WHAT? EWW NO RINOA MUST DIE!!!! SHE'S A MARY SUE AND OMG SHE STEALS SQUALL FROM SEIFER AND HSKHSKGHKS *FOAMS AT MOUTH*
Person 1: o_o *regrets asking and backs away quicky*

9 -- addendum

(Anonymous) 2007-04-05 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
And/or bring their hatred of the character into completely unrelated topics/threads/discussions.

9. Aww, is that Wilson? I loves some Wilson. <3

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_dahne_/ 2007-04-05 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
4. So few? Really? Man. I could barely hear that scene over the sound of yaoi incest plotbunnies leaping into people's heads.

5. Why does this only happen to the characters who are ridiculously overcosplayed already? ZOMG THE WORLD REALLY NEEDED A 55,983th RINOA

6. Hah, I know exactly what you mean.

9. Wow, with Squall?

...You must hate a lot of people.

(But who could possible hate Wilson?)

5.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 04:46 am (UTC)(link)

This is true. It's always Rinoa and Yuna and other over cosplayed characters. You rarely seen something that's not naturally pretty simplistic and overdone done poorly, which goes back to my arguement of just trying to make your cosplay the best you can. Why bother with the time and the money if you're not going to try your best at something? I know it's for fun, but at least make it worth your time. But yeah, the world really doesn't been another Rinoa. My best friend used to make Rinoa costumes and list them on eBay whenever she needed some extra cash because they sold like crazy.

Re: 5.

[identity profile] kuni-izumi.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand cash-cowing Rinoa...she's so easy and basic to make.

It's the people who sell all satin costumes they never even PRESS before putting the pictures up that make me cry.

Half-assers for cash make me a sad sad puppy.

2. I actually do that, and honestly most of the times, when I istantly don't like a character just by looking at it, it confirms to be a bad (or better, a type of chara I don't really like) chara.
There were very very few exception from what I've seen so far, and the only one I can remember at the moment is Lacus from Gundam Seed.

4. You're not alone :DD

5. I think everyone has the right to cosplay if they want to, though obviously other people has the right to judge them.

[identity profile] kuni-izumi.livejournal.com 2007-04-05 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
5. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to costuming, and I mean that for ALL costumes, especially historical ones. (Barbarian women at Ren Faire LOSE.) So I can't stand when fat people cosplay skinny as a reed people and I KNOW it's unfair and biased because nobody DRAWS thicker attractive women FOR them to cosplay but...GOD THE ROLLS PEOPLE THE ROLLS OF FLESH SCAR MY EYES.

If you're gonna do it, at least make a costume that actually fits you and isn't skin tight.

Or buy Spanks.
