People who celebrate Thanksgiving...

What part of T-day dinner are you looking forward to the most?

My mother's corn casserole. It is basically massively upgraded cornbread and so delicious. Second would be pie.

The ham. It's the only day of the year I eat ham. Oh, and seeing my relatives, I guess.

We make a brussel sprouts side dish with heavy cream, cheese, and bacon. It's delicious.

I'm hosting this year so I look forward to the part where I manage to pull off making ALL THE FOOD and my family is settling down to eat what is hopefully a delicious, not-burned dinner, LOL. For food, I love the roasted yellow potatoes I make. I toss them with chunks of onion, unpeeled cloves of garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper and a bit of thyme.

And then I look forward to the part where people have gone home and my house is clean and the fridge is full of leftovers.

I live for turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it this year...

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and alllllll the pie! We’re going out to a local buffet for it because it’s such a slog doing all that cooking and cleaning for just two people. My husband went to the buffet last year while I was visiting family and begged me to spend this one with him and we go there, so that’s what we’re doing. The plan is that I’ll visit my family every other year :)

Homemade mac and cheese. And putting some mashed potatoes on a bread roll with some turkey.

For actual food, I'm a big fan of stuffing and cranberry sauce washed down with sparkling Cider. TV stuff should be exceptionally entertaining this year as well.

Re: People who celebrate Thanksgiving...

Mashed potatoes and stuffing. Stuffing is one of those things that can be made really good while still gluten-free, and potatoes inherently are.

I don't get the appeal of turkey, it's just worse chicken. It tastes leftover even when it's freshly cooked.

In general it's my least favorite of the food-centric holidays.

Not to sound egotistical but I'm a good cook. everything about it except for two things:
1. I have to have the window open and the box and kitchen fans going full blast because if I don't the stupid smoke alarm goes off every time I turn the oven on. Which means I'm freezing and no TV or music because the fans are too loud for me to hear anything else.
2. I'm going to be alone for the fifth year in a row.

Stuffing and green bean casserole! I'm going to make stuffing from scratch this year, and I've figured out how to doctor green bean casserole enough that it's delicious and umami-y rather than sad slime so it's a favorite.

What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you like your villains to be pure evil? Do you like complex backstories? Tell us!
philstar22: (Disney: Jafar)

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-11-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both. I just like villains. As long as they are well written, either version can work. I like fully evil and thrilled with it, complicated and believe they are good, former heroes turned evil, and everything in-between. Just give me interesting villains who are fun to watch.

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I like nuance, but not TOO much backstory, if that makes any sense. I prefer it when villains aren't just cartoonishly evil for no apparent reason other than the plot requires a villain. But on the other hand, I don't want a long sob story about their childhood because that starts to feel like some kind of apologist move.

I guess my favorite is when the villain has their own (logical, for them) reasons for doing what they do, and when they believe they're trying to do the right thing (or at least, the best thing under the circumstances) but because life is complicated, they end up doing something that is terrible instead. I also like it when there's some kind of perfect storm scenario where someone means to do well, but Shit Happens and they don't/can't/won't deal with it and whatever good intentions or noble goals they might've had goes to hell in a handbasket.

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of want them to be simply evil most of the time. I want bad guys to be bad and be punished, and good guys to be good and rewarded. I want that satisfying simplicity that real life doesn't deliver.

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I like a variety and it depends entirely on the story. If there's room for a nuanced, complex villain then I'm there for it, but if the story isn't much more than good vs evil then a standard, fun and over the top villain is what I'll be there for as well.

It's all in the execution for me.

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if "pure evil" is what I'd call it but I like when villains are fine with what they're doing. Some internal debate is okay but they should ultimately believe in what they are doing and commit to being the bad guy if that's what they want to do. Or have to do in order to achieve something else. They don't need to LOVE being evil but I don't want to watch them pity themselves or turn around and say they had no choice or they HAD to do something. Make choices, decide something is worth it, and commit!

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Evil and unrepentantly so. The sort of evil who embraces the Evil lifestyle, but also classy as hell with it. Think of Ming the Merciless from the eighties Flash Gordon movie, or Baal from Stargate SG1. That sort of evil. Gotta have fun with it.

The sort of evil that if you came to them to ask their trauma and tale of woe that took them from cutie pie through dark antihero to villain would just laugh in your face, because they don't have that trauma path. They just like being out and proud about being bad.

Re: What's your preferred type of fictional villain and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want a villain who dwells on their sob story backstory. Sure, they can HAVE one, that's fine, but I don't want them to gnash their teeth and wail over it. I don't want them to be so downtrodden that they snap and do terrible things. I want them to make the conscious decision to, even for revenge, go out and be evil and own it.

Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

Anyone still watching Critical Role? (spoilers I think?)

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave up on c3 awhile ago but I am intrigued that I've read the Mighty Nein and Scanlan show up? Wondering if it's worth it to jump back in mid campaign for those shenanigans or if I'll be totally lost/not interesting enough because of c3 story/characters I have no interest in.

Name-Britpicking.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-24 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
I need advice on two names.
Norman Hardbrake: Does this sound like the sort of name a persnickety and uptight middle class naval officer who is a bit of a wet blanket might have, circa WW2 era?
Barrington Garvey: Working class but whose parents had aspirations, mixed race cockney kid, circa 1960s, possibly a Windrush kid?

Do these names ring true to British ears? Thoughts?
