That sucks, I'm sorry for your uncle that they can't get something as easy as the right era or genre of music correct for him. I have that exact worry with my own parents, if they ever needed to be in a memory care unit--yes, they grew up in the 60's and early 70's, and my mom would probably be fine with music from that era. My dad, though, does not like rock and roll, if a memory unit were to play oldies for him in an attempt to keep him happy, it'd have the exact opposite effect. Would they listen to him when he says he doesn't want that music? Would they listen to me when I tell them he's a classical musician through and through, just put on some fucking Brahms and he'll be fine?

Anyway, that's a lot of rambling to say that I feel you :/

It is actually a big problem in memory care right now, because... a lot of senior staff are still Boomers. And they don't want to admit they are old folks themselves now, and to them "old folks" still means Greatests (or earlier), so they still do all the "war" shit as entertainment. Even though most of their clients are now fellow boomers, and even some elder Xers if they have early-onset, with no connection to tea dances and Vera bloody Lynn. Just another area that boomers are screwing up in, because they don't want to leave the workforce. They create policies that reassure their own egos, and based on their own formative workplace experiences not the current realities.

I honestly would have assumed the fandom would have come down 50/50 on this one. Just seems like one of those things, plus a really fun thing to explore in fic from both sides. Is fandom mostly Team Separate People?

Logically, you’ll have two personalities that are probably very similar. But one is going to be Nature plus Nuture, and the other will be almost entirely Nature.

I think the same - they can separate them from their autobiographical memory, so their goals may be different, but their attitudes and emotions are the same. Helly is the clearest example of this, but you can see it in the others as well. Helly does not take no for an answer; Mark just wants to keep his head down and be left alone; Dylan talks a big game but craves recognition and stability; Irving will follow orders on the surface but he's doing his own thing and seeking beauty.

I feel you OP and I get what you mean. I'm bi too and I'm not against masculine men, at least looks-wise, but I cannot stand the kind of male lead in these m/f books because so many of them are this dommy alpha-male archetype that I just cannot stand, even if they get less of an asshole I just don't care from the offset so I can't get into the romance. It's absolutely not a 'all women love this' because no, I don't.

Buff masc dude who's gentle and loves his woman? Sign me the fuck up.

Buff masc dude who treats his woman like a sex-doll? No thanks I'll pass.

And It's a shame because I think I'd probably enjoy some of the romantasy stuff because I do enjoy romance stories but I just cannot click with the romances or male leads at all.
