Defining “adaptation”

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-11-30 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you define “an adaptation” of another work?

(Bonus: How do you define “an homage”?)

If it has to keep a certain amount of the details the same as the original, what details are most important? (e.g. plot, character, setting, tone, etc)

Is there anything popularly called an adaptation that you disagree with? Or something that isn’t usually called an adaptation that you think should be?

Re: Defining “adaptation”

(Anonymous) 2025-11-30 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk I think the word adaptation has a lot of room inside it.

Like there are some things I've watched/read that are most certainly adaptations of a certain thing, but very loosely, as in the characters are the same, the plot is largely the same but the tone or structure is different enough that it's not an entirely faithful adaptation. And this doesn't mean bad, it just means that it's doing something different but it's still an adaptation.

A homage is more something that is inspiring the feel of a work but isn't taking anything more than that, so the difference between Sherlock and Psych for instance. Sherlock is a modern adaptation, Psych is a modern homage to the Holmes character, it has some of the trappings but isn't actually trying to be a proper adaptation.

That's where I see the distinction at least.

Adaption does have room, but there needs to be some aspect of the original in it, even if everything else is only loosely translated. An example I'd use would be Wizard of Oz. I don't personally think it is a good adaption, but it is an adaption. It changes a lot, but it does take things from the original. Another example would be the Hobbit movies. Not good adaptions but they are adaptions.

Homage just means inspired by, doesn't have to have anything of the original in it.

There has to be certain number of details that are the same in order for it to count as an adaptation, but the mixture can vary. And the edges between adaptation and homage can be fuzzy. I also say that intent does matter here. Galaxy Quest has a lot in common with the original Star Trek series, but it is an homage. Clueless changed a lot from Emma, but it is an adaptation.

Re: Defining “adaptation”

I definitely think intent has a lot more to do with it than strict characteristics. An unfaithful or barely-faithful take can still be an adaptation if whoever's in charge intends it to be an adaptation no matter how far off-book they go. An homage is more like a few deliberate nods (tone, visuals, a theme or character personality here and there ) but overall the intent was to develop something mostly unique. That way, if a nod to a trope or visual gets pegged as "hey, aren't you ripping that off from Star Trek?" they can say "homage" and it's safe. And probably intentional, to pay homage to a great work that came first and laid the ground for how this new work fits in. I would call the Orville an homage to Star Trek, for example.

then again, I genuinely feel that Independence Day is the best adaptation of War of the Worlds, even though there doesn't seem to have ever been an intent to adapt WotW. It exists as an homage because "aliens felled by earthly virus" is an established classic trope, but surprisingly, it follows the book's plot beats closer than any War of the Worlds Movie Adaptation of this Decade.

Loose adaptations I would call interpretation I think. Hommage for me is more an acknowledgement of a theme. Like Warm Bodies being Hommage to Romeo and Juliette.

What restaurants do you miss?

We had a taco truck show up in town and they were here for over six months. They made the best quesabirria I've ever had. Their burritos were also great and everything was affordable. One day, they disappeared and I fear they will never be back.

The delicious food in question. https://i.imgur.com/jnscBBr.png

When we were in San Antonio, there was this Eastern European restaurant that had amazing food. Borscht, pierogi, cabbage rolls. I only spent one year in Eastern Europe, but I fell in love with the food. I haven't found a similar restaurant here in Dallas.

There is an Indian restaurant in El Paso called India Palace and it was amazing! The family were wonderful, all of their food was always perfect, and it was just an awesome place. I moved away over ten years ago but I think about that place all the time. I often check online to see if they’re still in business; we were really worried about them during the pandemic and I know things haven’t gotten all that much better for mom and pops since then. I am driving through there next year and am really excited to visit that restaurant again. Although the owners won’t know me by sight anymore LOL

My favourite sushi place in town closed down after 7 years on Friday last week. I already miss them 😢

That food looks amazing!

There was a cozy cafe within walking distance of my house that made the most amazing breakfast sandwiches, among other things. The workers were all super friendly and I knew them all by name. Sadly, they went out of business during Covid and now there's a lousy Starbucks in their place.

There was a nice little Italian restaurant in a nearby town, and then the hotel next door made them an offer they couldn't refuse for the property-- and have proceeded to do JACK SHIT with it for the last 8 years. 🤬

Papa's American Cafe - they had this delicious fish & fries (or fish & chips, I suppose it's called in some other areas) meal that I always used to get from there.

Also, Fazoli's.Good Italian restaurant.

We had a place called Burrito Drive, incredible chimichangas. The owner just didn't want to do it anymore, but he's active on the local subreddit and people keep begging him to write and sell a recipe book. I hope he does, his shit was great.

My neighborhood used to have the best ice cream shop. Intense, creative flavors made with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. I really wanted them to succeed so I made a point to visit regularly, probably more than I should. Then there was a change in management because the previous owner, who ran everything, wanted to pursue other projects. Fair! But things went downhill fast. Their hours got very inconsistent and I kept dropping by only to find them closed. Then covid lockdowns hit and they never reopened. :(

This Indian restaurant in downtown Berkeley that used to be a bank.
A pan-Asian chicken wing place that was right down the street from me
An East Coast style seafood place in SF that served fried clam bellies. These are damn near IMPOSSIBLE to get on the West Coast. They also used to give me free glasses of wine on my birthday.
All the dim sum takeout places in Oakland Chinatown. Covid killed them ALL off.
Rory's Twisted Scoop. Great ice cream place in SF. Amazing flavors.
Most branches of Max's
Most of the Italian delis in North Beach
The barbecue place across from the SF zoo.
I could keep going on but I'm starting to get depressed.

Oh man, when I was in high school, my hometown had this amazing Taiwanese restaurant that had the best beef noodle soup. They had to close because a Trader Joe's moved into the strip mall they were in and rent prices for the surrounding businesses all skyrocketed, and afaik the owners haven't reopened somewhere new.

Chronological review of the restaurants I left behind, because oh man. I think about good food I once had often.

Polly's-- this was my EARLY childhood and honestly I do not remember a thing about the food but I remember ours had a player piano, but the location that had been in the town where I was born is gone, and I no longer live near any of the remaining locations.

Po Boys-- oh man, Po Boys. I miss you, Po Boys. Grandparents used to take us there on the odd special occasion. They did a rolled dumpling instead of a drop dumpling, which I disagree with on principle, my grandmother did dropped dumplings when she made chicken and dumplings at home. But, the food was, on the whole, fantastic, and the atmosphere was fun.

Shakey's-- the pizza place of my very early childhood.

Pizza Factory-- the pizza place of my later childhood (we moved, and for a while, up in the mountains, it was the only game in town and we did not ache for another)

Sal's-- For a while they were just a burrito truck, then they got a brick and mortar for a while... and then for a time, their truck was stationed en route to my best friend's house... To this day, the burrito by which I judge all others.

welcome Home-- I did not live near this one, more's the pity. I ate there on a trip with some college theatre friends, to San Francisco. Place had closed before the next trip there.

Little Oven Pizza-- AMAZING pizza place that opened up in the town I went to college and have since moved away from. They had a lot of rotating specials where they'd put wild things on pizza. Thin slices of potato on a white pizza, squash and lemon, they were the first place we saw hot honey on a pizza before it seemed like everyone was doing it-- in fact, that was the first time we saw hot honey, period.

Hunan Chinese Restaurant-- First we moved away, then they closed, but this was THE best Chinese restaurant in Fresno (didn't live there but lived close enough to make occasional visits, during my time in central CA)

La Hacienda-- Not to be confused with a place called La Hacienda 2, which was like... across the street, and completely unrelated. There were several great Mexican places living in central CA, I mean we were spoiled for choice, and there was one fantastic hole in the wall that I never even learned the name of, it was just the Mexican place by the DMV to me... but La Hacienda is where I was introduced to flautas, and I'm not sure any place I've found since has done it better.

Los Palomas-- This one hurt. This place was so close to us when we moved, and the food was INCREDIBLE. Truly amazing enchiladas, it was hard to order anything else. I mean I tried several things (they also did have very good flautas!), but their enchilada game was next level. They could do green sauce, red sauce, or Christmas style. I usually got the chicken, but they had seafood, they had vegetarian, they had a couple different beef options... This was the restaurant I went to for my birthday every year, until they closed. Plus, it being so close, it was so convenient to pick up food to go between errands and home... I miss this place. For a while we had a place we really liked, that opened around the time they closed, but that love affair did not last. There ARE other good Mexican restaurants in town, at different price points, you know, there are good options... but this was MY place, this place made me feel at home after moving way up north.

There was a little locally-owned restaurant right next to my job. They made kind of generic American comfort food in a "home style" way. It was kind of pricey, but the servings were pretty good sized, and it was all delicious. I never had anything bad from there. They also had THE BEST baked potatoes I have ever had in my life. They shut down with zero warning a few months ago, and I am still gutted. Here's a pic of one of their potatoes:

Pointless whining: I hate cold weather.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-30 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ok with like...50s and above. But below that, I'm just miserable, because it's impossible to get myself to a comfortable temperature. Some part of me is always too cold while another part is too hot. I have rosacea, so my face flushes really uncomfortably after I've been exposed to the cold. The heater is on, I get too hot. The heater goes off, I get too cold. The blanket warms me until my face turns bright red but my hands are freezing. Etc etc etc.

Sorry nonny. Personally I'm the opposite, I hate hot weather. I had being hot, I hate unshaded sunlight. I'm not really made for Texas weather. I don't love being freezing cold per say, but I'd rather be cold than hot. I can't sleep when I'm hot, I feel sick when I'm hot, I get migraines easily when hot. Summer is my least favorite season.

I will say that the heater can trigger migraines for me because my mom likes to keep it warmer than I do. I tend to have my ceiling fan on high most of the time, which does help.

Disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-01 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not naive. I know people can be truly awful and behave in ways that are cruel and selfish. But someone in my life has hit a new low that I didn't think they were capable of, and I'm struggling with the heavy load of stress and disappointment (betrayal even) that I feel about them. I honestly don't know if I can stand to speak to this person again, but it's going to be difficult because of the dynamic of this friendship group. If I cut them out of my life, I don't just lose that person, I stand to lose quite a few people I've known for a long time who are dear to me, and who are in an awkward position because of this conflict.

As a secondary disappointment, I vented to some friends outside the group - people who I've been there for during their difficult times like ugly divorces, depression, deaths. I badly needed someone to listen because this has me wrecked emotionally. I try to cut people some slack because everyone's got problems and busy lives and many demands on their time. But damn. It's hard to realize that the people you thought cared about you actually look on you as a low priority. And that while they seem grateful for your support when they're going through a tough time, but for some reason won't be there for you when you need it.

It doesn't feel reasonable to just throw in the towel and say fuck it, and withdraw from all my social groups but I've never felt more like becoming a hermit and avoiding all human contact for a couple decades.
