Okay, so recent events have brought up the subjects of rape and abuse in certain corners of fandom - check. A few have been alarmist and man-hating - check. The number of women raped every year is frightening - check.

I'm not getting a 'troll' vibe here, oddly enough... Anyway, it sounds to me like you were too naive previously and have now swung too far in the opposite direction. It's true that letting someone - anyone, don't think that women are never ever predatory - get close to you gives them an opportunity to harm you if they wish to. It's also true that more or less every man you ever get to know will, at some point in your acquaintanceship, make misogynistic jokes around you, will try to nudge you into gender-conformism, etc.

What's not true is that this has to control your life. See, that's just letting the terrorists win.

Trust is always like that, though, whoever you're trusting in, male or female or neither. Someone might let you down, massively. You can either trust them anyway and be ready to pick up the pieces later, or you can give up.

Dude. It's good to be cautious and realistic, and yes, men can be violent bullies. But the vast majority of them ... aren't. Women can be just as cruel/violent/abusive, although the physical difference really highlights it in men. Don't go around feeling paranoid and victimized! That does not help anyone!

I actually don't think this is a troll secret, just hideously misguided naivete. Should you be cautious in a culture in which 6% of college men surveyed admitted to having raped someone? Sure. But the other 90% of dudes are not out to rape or hurt you, and they're not hard to find. Additionally, if you reserve your good sense instincts for men, remember ladies can also rape, rob, or mutilate you.

And I'm also pretty thankful I'm not in whatever dour fandoms you hang out in.

It can be scary and depressing reading certain stories, finding out about certain statistics, and I see where you're coming from, in a way. But (and I know this sounds really corny) if you live in fear, whatever fraction of men it is that really should scare you-- you've already let them win. That's what they want, for you to be scared of them and not challenge them. Assuming you live in a place where there is to some extent a safe space for women, you really can't let them get to you like that. Not to say, "just pretend everything's fine," but there is a balance.

(If you live in a place that really is fairly dangerous for women, of course, feel free to disregard.)
