OP, I think I agree with you.

(Although I also ship Bowser/Kammy Koopa in a weird unrequited sort of way.)

(...And also Bowser/Kamek, but that mostly happened because I can't tell Kamek and Kammy apart. YES, ALL MAGIKOOPA LOOK ALIKE TO ME. D: I'M A BAD PERSON, I'M SORRY.)

Me, I always just saw Sid and Diego. They get cuddly a lot.

I read your previous comment as you being uncomfortable with the people pointing out that the HUFF kind of reaction is wrong.
I apologize for misunderstanding.

Yeah, I'm thinking fandom B is either a reality show like X Factor etc, or Glee which is accepting video auditions.

Not really; nobody knows who Bonnie is

[identity profile] master-kogane.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That would make sense, thank you.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not childish at all, OP! I feel the same way about them.

I grew up on 30s/40s/50s movies, thanks to my mother and pre-infomercial television programming, and when all those movie stars started dying when I was a teenager it was really upsetting. When Cary Grant died I didn't want to go to school; he was my first crush.

This.

Just because they're not interesting for you doesn't make it wrong to post them here. It's called Fandom Secrets for a reason.

Surely they're just as poignant as the "Looking for the A to my B" or "Fandom is my life" secrets.

I'm the opposite of you anon - I grew up with only brothers, was quite the tomboy as a child and still have mostly male friends (not by choice, I love my female friends and would like to make more, it's just that guys tend to share my hobbies) - and I write mostly male protagonists because it's easier for me. I'm more familiar with their thoughts and experiences; if I were to write about females I have a much smaller sample size, and there's no way I'm going to base my characterizations on what I see of women as portrayed in the media. Eugh. Nor am I going to assume my thoughts and experiences speak for those of all women.

That said, I've had the same thoughts as you, and lately I'm trying to write with more and more female characters, especially protagonists. It's actually extremely rewarding, and has improved my writing by leaps and bounds. I would highly recommend it.

(As for the trauma/abuse issue, I think that's different for everyone. I've noticed that it's very common for authors of both genders - to heap all of the abuse, especially sexual abuse, onto characters of the opposite sex. I think that this is either because it hits too close to home if it's the other way around - it's easier to discuss the topic when it's happening to The Other, and not The Self, so to speak - or because the author has sexualized the abuse and thus would, obviously, like to see it happen to the gender they're attracted to.)

Don't let it turn you off of seeing other bands live!

All the Hetalia fans I have ever talked to have said they knew it was inaccurate and all it did was perhaps interest them in a certain country, event, etc.

I've never met those "I learned so much about the American Revolution after reading America's Storage Cleaning Strip!" people. I feel I'm doing it wrong.

I have, however, learned actual history for really well-written fic. There are some great fanworks for this series.

Thank you.

As someone who was working on a novel at the time of the big racefail in '09, I definitely wondered if I had written hundreds of pages of something insulting, and whether it would be best to make the Black character a white man just in case I'd made some mistake. I realized after a while that whitewashing my story wasn't the right thing to do... but I did, indeed, get defensive, and did wonder for a while if it would be the lesser of two evils to pretend that There Are No POC In Space.

I eventually realized that makes no sense, and looking over what I'd written I didn't *think* I was doing anything I didn't see. But I worried. So all that I mean is... I agree that huffs are unproductive, but the defensive "I don't know what the hell to do! I've put a lot of work into this -- years of writing -- and it's easier to get angry than to consider that I might need to spend another year fixing it all" reaction is... natural, I think, for all that it's really fucked up TOO.

Why do you think he has AIDS? If it's just cos he's (possibly) a gay man, then, dude, that's a pretty lousy attitude to have.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's generally true except for American network TV and YA novels and animated shows which all artificially keep the swearing down—think of how free BSG was because they made up their own word. People bitch about swearing in HP fics but Ron swears in the books.

That said, when I see people swearing in weird ways I always figure the writer is rather young.

You're not alone. I went home and wrote fic of Buzz comforting Woody about the TRAUMATIZING AND HEARTBREAKING ENDING of said film. Cause Woody would need a good cry, despite the fact that his eyes can't actually produce tears.

DAMN THEIR PLASTIC SOULS FOR BEING SO REAL.

What do you mean Mario doesn't show any affection? It's subtle, yes, but he clearly does - right off the top of my head, the first thing that comes to my mind is the end of New Super Mario Bros. Wii - when he saves her, he does this classy bow, she kisses him, and he literally jumps up and down going YAAAAAY.

And the reason it seems like Peach always asks for his company while Mario never does is because that's how the games get started - Mario gets invited to something Peach is doing, Bowser catches wind of it and starts to raise trouble. Besides, she's a princess, he's a plumber, he probably doesn't invite her to his place because he just lives in a regular old house and he doesn't think she'd be too impressed or have much to do.

See, maybe I think too much about this, but I just think Mario is quite possibly one of the most lovably heroic characters in gaming, and it bugs me to see people downplay him for whatever reason. People like to make jokes about how "oh he's prolly just saving her to get cake", "oh he just wants to get laid", but in the games, it's pretty obvious that if he wanted to, he wouldn't even HAVE to go save Peach, he's just always done it because it's the right thing to do.

I really don't mind Bowser/Peach, and it can be really cute. And yes, in the RPGs, Bowser is generally a lot more lovable and a lot less evil, but in the actual platformers, dude's actually pretty serious about his evil deeds. I can get behind the idea that they're all actually friends and this is just what Bowser kinda does, but sometimes an asshole is just an asshole.

good lord i typed a lot

I didn't really realize there were people out there like that, although I should have.
And because I have the gif, to those people Sylar says:

Image (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/1103/drewbie82/animated%20gifs/?action=view&current=73p91d.gif)

And because these people exist...

Well OP, for this secret?

YOU WIN AT LIFE. THE END.

Mmm-hmm. Even more often-- breath and breathe. :/

[identity profile] ingridmatthews.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the trouble stems from the (very false) idea that Jesus can be "less God" if He 'succumbs' to His humanity, when actually, just the opposite is true. He is always All God, All Man, All Holy Spirit - it's kind of the point of the entire exercise, if you know what I mean. ;)

If Magdalene was His chosen one as Man that doesn't affect His standing as God and Holy Spirit in the slightest. She cried with His Mother (who was also the Bride of the Holy Spirit and yet her role isn't called into question) at the cross and she was given the gift of seeing him Risen first. At the very least she was extraordinarily blessed, maybe so much so that certain male voices of the church found her threatening enough to turn into something she definitely wasn't.

I'm very happy to envision her as His human wife, whether consummated or not. She's worthy of the title.
