If the series in question was inspired from a particular culture, it more than a little disappointing when the actors cast to bring to life aren't representative of said culture. White actors aren't inherently a racist notion and in fact are perfectly capable of acting alongside minority actors in such productions. But Hollywood's history is to cast mostly white actors in place of minority talent, even in situations where the source material obviously calls for something different. To add insult to injury, portrayals of other minority groups are often stereotypical, underdeveloped in either the protagonist or antagonist role, and just altogether pushed to the background.

There's so much more to this, but again, I'm headed out the door to work. I have to agree with you on making overweight character magically skinny in the adaptations -- especially when it was a fairly crucial part of the story.
