The difference between something like South Park is that they have an entire body of work available for someone to look at, the joke is within a huge multi-seasoned context. In fact, a lot of the jokes in the early seasons were more offensive than the ones in the later seasons because of the tone changes and maturing in the series, the context changed.

I don't think anyone's obligated to give that benefit of a doubt to a random person telling an offensive joke, and I definitely don't think the burden of educating bigoted people falls on the shoulders of their victims.

Your main goal here seems to orbit around the Be Nice Brigade which puts the focus back on the feelings of the person who was in the wrong. That's ridiculous. What if the victim doesn't WANT to ignore it? They should just suck it up, because yelling would hurt the other person's feelings? What? Why does the moral maturity of a bigot lie in the hands of their victim? Do you know how often minorities are told to be quiet because they'll make a scene, they'll make other women/blacks/jews/anything not a white male look bad?

I want you to reread the first comment you got, and really try to figure out why you defaulted on assuming that the joke wasn't worthy of being shot down, and why it was so important to you to assure that person they had nothing to apologize for (probably!!!). Was it because the poster just seemed sad and you wanted to cheer them up? Isn't it just as possible that several people were made sad by their hilarious joke? Why was your immediate thought that it was just a bunch of uppity people complaining?

But I think this will be my last time trying to explain any of this on F!S, this place has become the squatting grounds for the Be Nice Brigade and I lost the patience to calmly and sweetly explain why someone should get off my foot ages ago.

Also you don't know how to use re:.

I usually roll my eyes when people say "age is is just a number", but even I think you sound way judgey and kind of cruel. And really selfish.

Another day, another time I'm happy I'm in animation fandom.

First of all I should say that I am extremely wary of the theory you mention because I've most often seen it couched in pretty distressing and hateful-sounding anti-trans, anti-male rhetoric (a la dirtywhiteboi), but I don't want to discount it outright, either.

But instead of assuming that fandom is the cause of dysphoria in these individuals, you could also consider that their pre-existing dysphoria might be driving them to fandom, and to fixating on certain outlets (like fiction) that help them feel better about themselves. It seems an equally likely possibility, at least in my view.

What manga is this?

Cosigning this entire comment, but especially the first paragraph.

Aw, but our special snowflakes are the best part!

....what? When was the 9 fandom like this?

...you are the most amazing Mod ever.

EVER.

So when I was playing FF7, I renamed all of the characters after comic book heroes I liked. However, when I got to Cid, I couldn't bear to rename him because... he's Cid! You can't have Final Fantasy without a Cid! So I just tweaked it a little and named him "Cid, baby".

So when he introduced himself it was with a giant leap and then "I'm Cid, baby!" which was sort of hilarious, it looked like he was addressing Tifa and might as well have called her 'toots'. I grinned.

And then this scene came along. XD

This is a good idea, actually. If the goal shirt (or dress or whatever) is multiple sizes away, the whole thing can frequently backfire on a person. If the goal shirt starts to feel unattainable, it can turn into a horrible vicious cycle.

You're making assumptions about how much I do know about the relationship and her. No mistake I'm a jerk in ways about this situation but thre is more that would come too close to revealing her if I went into detail. There are bad signs. She is barely 18 and doing things that are legal but I worry too much too soon for her, based on knowing her a while, but are probably mundane to him.

fuck me for owning up to the kind of stupid ~not the main point~ selfish feeling most people have sometimes as an aside.

If you're concerned about spamming your flist, you can simply check the backdate option when you are about to post the entry, and it shouldn't show up on their reading page. Just mention in your next entry that you posted a fic for Nonexistent Fandom, and anyone who's interested can easily check it out.

I read fics in fandoms I'm unfamiliar with all the time. A good story is a good story.

What you said exactly - by that point in the story, there is precedent for it. And I'm going to add, it really wasn't an ass-pull if you recall your astronomy. Their names are Cerecere, Pallapapalla, Vesves, and Junjun. The four original asteroids, which were for a time considered planets, are Ceres, Pallas, Vesta, and Juno. All in all, not much of a leap. Also goes to show that it was planned from when the characters were created.

That all said, eh, I could take 'em or leave 'em.

way to post the same joke that was old from the beginning.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Agreed, actually. But the OP shouldn't be intimidated as the current cycle of BBC Sherlock fics on that community is leaning towards the 1 gem in 100 could be any two American bodies ratio.

You know something, I'm exactly like you. Quality female characters play a big role for me in liking a show. However in the case of Supernatural I make an exception because even though it doesn't include females in the action, it also doesn't marginalize them as the girl-at-home or slut-in-the-bar. Going into season one that was my biggest fear: that this show was about two brothers kicking demon ass while picking up and dropping ladies like beer cans. Not so. Sure there's a distinct lack of female presence there, but you'll accept it once you see what the show's real dynamic is about, and how decorative female characters would have ruined it.

Social Justice Warrior. Someone who goes around making it their business to "enlighten" the ignorant and "privileged" masses about what is acceptable to say and what is not.

> Your reaction is way disproportionate to the offense.

I don't think you've really thought this through.

Spoiling is one of the few things you can do to someone that's completely and irrevocably permanent. Once it's done, it can never be undone, or even really mitigated in any way. There aren't many offenses you can say that about (that you can do to someone over the Internet, anyway).

Their reaction was fine. It's not the biggest spoiler ever, but it's still a dick move to use it in an icon (on a comm with thousands of viewers, no less) the day after the episode runs.

Nevermind, found it myself. xD Kind of rapey, but mmmm evil Sam.
