This.

I also hate that it's still considered 'weird' for girls to see horror or action movies EVEN THOUGH I ALWAYS SEE HEAPS OF GIRLS AT THE CINEMA WHEN THEY ARE RELEASED! Because nooooo, we only have to be interested in 'chick flicks'. Ugh.

Word up! I know lots of girls -- including my friends! -- who do like them and that's fine, but I don't and hate that people consider it the only genre that girls/women can possibly be interested in. Ugh.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love some of them, like Sleepless in Seattle, but it's not my favourite genre at all. And yes, I also like them even less when there's a wedding at the end.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, why is this a secret?! You're so not alone there.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, okay, that's fine and dandy, but I think you (and others like you who make similar comments) fail to realize that there really are girls out there who actually do like chick flicks and watching them with friends over a bottle of wine.

I mean, why else would they keep making them?

Huh. Aside from being almost as orange as the LJ header, that's a really good picture of Matthew McConaughey. Sorry, that's pretty much all I have to contribute.

Well, not quite all, because I do like horror, action and sci-fi, but I also love a nice romcom and drama.

I feel the exact same way you do.
It doesn't need to be a secret.

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Even though I love chick flicks with every fiber of my being, I agree with the sentiment here. Just because I'm a woman, doesn't mean I can't also love every other movie genre!

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I own 272 films on DVD. Of those 272 films, a grand total of 3 are romantic comedies - Clueless, Cutting Edge, and When Harry Met Sally. You could maybe bump it up to 7 if you counted But I'm a Cheerleader, D.E.B.S., Mr. and Mrs. Smith, or True Lies, none of which really meet the criteria. Most everything else is action, science fiction, fantasy, lgbt interest, or my weird obsession with hockey movies. You wouldn't believe the weird looks my collection gets the first time someone comes to my house.

[identity profile] emmybuns696.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
The fuck kinds of people are you hanging out with? I don't know a single person that would judge me for not liking romcoms. Yes, it's always probably going to be EXPECTED that I do because their target audience IS women, but I've never been mocked or criticized for liking action movies. As long as you don't launch off on a rant about feminism and whatnot every time someone assumes you would like a romcom (something more like "eh, not my scene, I'm not a fan of romcoms, they're too predicatble!"), you should feel completely free to watch whatever movies you want.

On a slightly related note, HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE THE WEDDING PLANNER?! I LOVE that movie, and I'm not necessarily a fan of romcoms!

[identity profile] riah-chan.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I hate rom-com with the heat of a thousand burning suns. They make me angry and never fail to trigger an embarrassment squick. The funny thing is, my husband loves them. XDDD

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I like GOOD romantic comedies. Of which there are few and far between, these days. And I tend to like the ones that are kind of off-the-wall and different anyway, like TiMER and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I wouldn't say I hate chick flicks, but I typically wouldn't watch them of my own volition (also, eugh, McCaunaghey).

Despite that, I remember seeing that movie when I was 12 and... I still am embarrassingly fond of it haha.

I don't like them much either...but there are still a few gems.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
This, oh my god. My favourite film genres ranked by volume are drama and horror, action, thriller, then comedy. Most romcoms are way too heteronormative for me to be able to relate too, lol.

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate them, some of them are truly atrocious and I'd really just want to bash my head watching them. (I'm looking at you McConaughey) But some of them are cute. Even the best of them though are cliche and predictable. We get it hollywood, the only way women will ever be happy is when they have a man in their life.

I hate the stereotype more than words can describe though. They're not my idea of a fun time. And I know my father enjoys "chick" flicks. So the idea that 'this is what women love' and 'guys are better than this crap' really needs to die.

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I am so tired of hearing about romcoms at work during lunch. I hate romcoms. And apparently I'm silly for wanting to see Harry Potter? I'm normally not bitter about the RL/Fandom divide, but I'm kinda getting there.

And they look at me a little funny when I talk about politics. I would rather talk about Murdoch's possible downfall or the latest episode of Utena than the latest romantic movie or reality show.

ARGH.

Omg I love this secret. I hate romantic comedies. I've seen some which were good I guess... But they aren't my idea of a fun time. I hate that since I'm a girl I must love these.

I'd much rather watch movies with monsters or superheroes... Whatever. xDDD

[identity profile] quamquam20.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Shit, this reminds me of 6th grade sleepovers. My friends started to hate me because I always fell asleep in the middle of romantic comedies.

However I must say that Bridesmaids is fucking amazing and is my one exception.

there are like one or two romcoms in the history of the world that I like. people still believe that all girls love them? lmaoo, so wrong.

[identity profile] katflace.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Hell, I dislike almost all romance in fiction, even if it's just a side plot. And if it's subtle enough for me not to be bothered by, chances are I'll just not even notice it's there at all. Clearly I just lost all XX chromosome cred.

(Oddly enough, fanfic about non-canon romance is fine. Unless it's that kind of neverending zomg marriage domesticity babies! epic, I don't care for that either. I suppose I like them for the intrigue of how authors manage to make unlikely couples plausible and not so much the actual romance?...)

[identity profile] ianthine9.livejournal.com 2011-07-21 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hate most of them too.

But I also have a really big embarrassment squick, and that seems to be the plot of most of them.
