They were fighting Death Eaters. I'm sure a lot of those kids in Slytherin had parents who were Death Eaters. Epic battle would commence. I mean, I see it as more of McGonagall not wanting the kids to see their parents die and stuff. :|||

Yeah that was a '...what?' moment for me as well. Hell, as I was leaving the theatre, I was half wanting to write a fic about a Slytherin who hadn't turned on them who spoke against being tossed in the dungeon so casually. But I think it's a symptom of the overall impression of Slytherin being that they are the 'bad' house, where all the evil comes from. And it's not as if the books don't help that impression along in the first place, so... I guess I'm saying that even though I disagree with the action, I know it's not an attitude that came completely out of thin air.

I hate the woobification of Slytherin in fandom, but IA. The book version was much better when they all volunteered to leave. I shouldn't be surprised that Kloves is a lazy writer, tho.

The Slytherin common rooms were in the dungeons. That's were going to their common room, like all the other students went to theirs (or were supposed to). It was phrased badly, but it's not like they were being locked up.

Harry's just telling his own kid he'll love him no matter what. Slytherin doesn't have to stop being awful for it to make sense.

As someone who stayed awake during statistics I'll be the first to agree that correlation does not imply causation but maybe after the hundredth Slytherin alumni goes on a killing spree you'd think they would conduct an investigation or something

Anyway yeah she could have just said 'Anyone who tries to lay a finger on Harry Potter will be escorted to the Dungeons' but I guess she was caught up in the moment

That scene annoyed me, too, and I don't consider it canon since that's not what McGonagall did in the books at all. It was such a shame, too, since McGonagall was in the middle of being really badass in that scene, then she had to go pull the house discrimination. Lovely.

Yeah, I felt embarrassed for them. I really, really wanted at least some of them to stand back and say "No, I want to stay to defend the castle". THAT would have expanded on the books.

I wish we could have a discussion about Hogwarts houses without being snippy, bitter and defensive about things. People over-reacting ALL OVER THE PLACE again.

Rowling hates Slytherin, always has and always will. And Harry's words in the epilogue reminds me of the last lines in "Justine". Yeah, very convincing. I totally believe you.

I think the handling of the houses (all the houses) in both the books and the movie were poorly done and undermined a lot of the other themes of the series as a whole, but that scene in particular had me looking around wondering if it was a joke.

That's really weird. I feel the exact opposite. I really liked that McGonagall made them leave, rather than them being given the decision and not a single student in the entire House choosing to stay. It had the effect of getting them out of the way without the "welp I guess all Slytherins are evil - or at least not good guys - after all" thing.

It was just one Slytherin, but the rest all rallied behind her, there was not a single one who stepped out from that group to position his or herself between Harry and those willing to betray him.

Take your butthurt, stop comparing what-those-smug-Gryffindors-did-in-a-young-adult-fantasy-series to real oppression, and go bartend in the dark, slytherfen.

But, and I fully admit that my eyes may have been playing tricks on me, I thought I saw some Slytherins stay behind to fight. I kept thinking I saw a student with a Slytherin crest on their uniform standing behind Harry in some of the scenes after the Slytherins were led off, but they were out of focus and may have been partially in shadow, and I may have totally been seeing things as well.

I agree, the scene was handled much better in the book. They were given the choice to stay and they didn't. I feel like that scene kinda killed movie!McGonnigal.
