I kind of loved that scene because it looked ridiculous. Hollywood sex scenes, particularly in films with female lead characters, are often about perfect lighting and simultaneous orgasms and the director spending hours obsessing over a shot to make sure the leads look beautiful at every possible moment. Sex in real life isn't like that. Particularly if, like these two characters, you aren't really sexually compatible - all he cared about was getting off with no thought to her enjoyment and comfort.

Reading all of that would have put me off of them, too. Good thing I never went looking for any part of the fandom for it aside from some fic.

To quote the formidable Dowager Countess: "Life is a game in which the players must appear ridiculous."

Meh. The wording of that is super-creepy, but when we were all teenagers there were a lot of 15-year-old girls dating guys in their early twenties, and none of us thought it was weird at the time.

Although now that I'm a bit older myself, I would find it weird if a 21-year-old friend started dating a 14-year old. How your perspective changes with age.

Wow, really? That was probably one of my favorite things that Glee has ever done. And I don't usually like their mashups. To each their own, I guess.

/chiming in on the awesomeness that is German

I'm currently taking German, and it's great. If you have a good grasp of English, the transition is easy, because the sentence structure stays the same. After Spanish and their "noun then adjective" structure, it just makes me so happy. Also, so many German words are nearly the English equivalent; it's the accent that's key. :)

For sure! (Also I love that that ship has the nickname of "Neapolitan")

Every time I watch this, I'm in tears by the time he starts addressing the soldiers. I swear if every person in the world had to sit down and watch it, we could achieve world peace. I repost it to my Facebook every couple months or so, hoping that eventually I'll get all my friends to watch it.

Neapolitan lesbians!

This is why people feel like they need to hide their illnesses. Because people like you say we're making it up or doing it for attention or it's not important and doesn't actually affect us. This is why mental illness is stigmatized.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
That depends on the person, though. A lot of people are like you describe.

But I've also met people online who used their mental health problems as a sort of excuse that put them beyond criticism. As in, any time anyone dared to disagree with them or call them out on something, they would go all "I CAN'T HELP IT I HAVE X ISSUE" or "I HAVE X PROBLEM AND YOU NEED TO KEEP THAT IN MIND WHILE TALKING TO ME YOU INSENSITIVE ASS"

And you know what? 90% of the time that actually fucking works, because nobody wants to be the asshole who picks on a mental health patient. As a person who deals with mental health problems myself, I say fuck. that. shit.

So I keep hearing! :D

That's lovely, and it sounds easier after taking Japanese for a while... I mean, there are special letters, but it's mostly the same alphabet, yes? Instead of having to learn a whole new 46 letter hiragana alphabet+46 letters of katakana+kanji... |D

Not that I didn't like learning Japanese! I did! But... Kanji and I have a love/hate relationship. |D

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say anything about love, though. She (he) just wants the sex, and sex with an attractive person can be a nice ego booster (among other things).

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's just that awesome, yes.

I want to make my friends and roommates watch it, and everyone in my hall, or fuck it, my whole dorm to watch it, but... Considering what my dorm is, it'd probably get laughed at. ;_;

I'm still gonna do what I can to set it up though! Because it deserves it. Yes.

And IA about the world peace bit. ♥

:I ....I have yet to see that as of yet, thank god.

Love this show!

Paint and ink

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I second the recommendation to start out in a kink meme; if things don't go as you want them to, your anon self (or sock puppet) can disappear easily. If porn isn't your thing, don't worry: all of them have fluff/plot/gen prompts running around too.

Good luck, OP!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, thanks for explaining tho. Appreciated!

[identity profile] shadowesque13.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Not alone, OP, not by a longshot.

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there you go. :) Excellent quote.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Mental health issues are absolutely stigmatised. You can't call into work sick with, say, a depression like you would with the flu in most workplaces, and that shit needs to change.

That said, there are many reasons why people might want to hide their mental illnesses, like there are many reasons why people may choose to hide physical illnesses. Only the people closest to me know about my mental health problems, because my mental health problems do not define me. They are personal, and I don't need everyone I've ever met to know about them.

Then yeah, it's the mix of all colors, lol. ♥

Okay, well lots of different people attracted to lots of different people looking for lots of different things out there too. It's just a matter of finding them.

[OP just sounded so down on themselves D: ]

Seriously? Fetishizing?

I am so tired of people calling interest in cultures, lifestyles, and what the fuck ever fetishizing. It isn't, and unless you're being super weird in a way that your secret doesn't show, you are not fetishizing deaf culture.

Here, a dictionary definition of fetish for everyone:
Fetish-
1. an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency.
2. any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades.
3. Psychology. any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.

Wanting to learn a damn language is not an example of fetishizing a culture unless you intend to assign the culture religious significance, adore it in a freakishly intense way, or develop a sexual fixation that precludes your enjoyment of sexual activity not involving that culture.

TL;DR: You're fine, OP. It's okay to want to learn about other cultures and languages solely because you're interested in them.
