I saw that kind of shit behavior in an old fandom of mine.

Me, I don't give a shit if you have Asperger's, are autistic or whatever. If you tell me, I'll shrug and be like "Okay." But if you use it constantly as an excuse to be a stupid prick to everyone else, fuck you and the horse you rode in on. I have friends with those same disorders who'd never do that kind of crap, and if you're a very low functioning autistic, you shouldn't be picking fights on the internet anyway.

oh okay that's stupid then

It's just a much more natural way to learn language - see it used in context to pick up the meaning, and memorize it through lots of natural repetition. Trying to consciously memorize more than a handful of words from a learning program or dictionary seems like a pointlessly uphill battle. It's necessary if you're learning a new language and you don't know enough to read and pick up new words, but for your native language it doesn't make sense to me.

People who read more (including a lot of well-written literature) and watch movies with people speaking well are better with words? Shocking! In other news, people who spend a lot of time lifting weights are strong, and water is wet. Seriously, how else would your vocabulary improve?

If you want to try out other fandoms, try the kinkmemes and go anon or create a sock-puppet journal that you can easily abandon if you need to. A sock puppet also allows you to have your fic beta-read and Brit-picked for ex. (insert country of --picking of your fandom choice if you're not a native of the show's origin). You may want to find kinkmemes for shows in your country of origin to help build your confidence. IOW, if American try writing in American-based shows first unless you're confident that you can write fine in other countries's fandoms or maybe start out in American fandoms even if not American. While there may be some American fans who will wank b/c you used the "wrong" word, I've not seen it and I've been around under various names online since 1989 (which is not me saying that it doesn't exist somewhere). I only say this 'cause of wank. Most will just say what's that or this is the word you want and are polite about it. I just usually smile and say oh, the author's British or Australian or something and maybe I'll tell hir the correct saying/word in American English. I don't really people who get all pissed about this.

I've seen so much wank b/c some of the British were upset an American writer didn't use the correct British word (for ex. American word: band-aids, British word for some thing: plasters). I doubt I'll ever write in a British fandom b/c of this wank; I just enjoy the fanworks by others who do (some of the wanks I saw were really vicious and I'm not mentally where I can shrug off negativity directed toward me very well right now). Just as I've seen anime fans taken to task by other, more knowledgeable fans for writing Christmas-based fanfics since generally the Japanese don't celebrate Christmas (a very tiny percentage are Christians).

I wouldn't mind having sex with Captain Jack, and I'm a lesbian.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why would you major in Asian Studies if you weren't a weeaboo?

Seriously. The only major more useless is probably philosophy.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's more a product of horrible upbringing though. Whatever kid ended up with Bro was gonna be wearing shades.

What's with all this "fetishizing their culture" stuff popping up? It's not just this secret, I've seen it on F!S pertaining to a whole bunch of different concepts and practices. I don't get it. How is being interested in sign language fetishizing their culture? Deaf people use sign language. It's not something they have sole jurisdiction over FFS. They probably wish MORE people knew ASL, so they could have a better chance of meeting someone they can communicate easily with. If you think ASL is cool, learn it. You're not taking anything away from deaf people. Hell, it might come in really handy some day.

Ah, the awkward moment when you realize that the sort of people who ship pedo relationships are actually kinda creepy.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Chick who said everyone in New Orleans should've outwalked Hurricane Katrina even if it meant leaving behind elderly relatives or their own children. Then hid behind her Asperger's and how she doesn't understand society when the proverbial shit hit the fan. She tends to use her Asperger's as an excuse for why she doesn't get it (no matter how hard she tries!) whenever someone calls her out on her shit.

[identity profile] vavarazzi.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a senior in the Japanese major, and I happen to enjoy the nerdier side of things as well, but after you continue down the path of the Japanese/Asian Studies a little bit, you start to realize how little it does to worry about that kind of stuff. Seriously, nobody who matters actually cares! To be honest most regular students won't treat you like this (unless maybe you dress in a way that looks fannish, like wearing anime t-shirts or something); in fact the only people who have ever attacked me for what I choose to study have been people in fandom. (A Western comic fandom, full of people who totally were into manga at one point but then decided they're ~far too mature~ for that. HA.)

As you begin to make connections with professors, do your study abroad, meet Japanese exchange students...you'll realize that liking otaku stuff is a perfectly acceptable pastime with young people these days in Japan. Almost every 20-something-year-old Japanese person I know reads One Piece or Bakuman, and many of them are familiar with NicoNicoDouga memes and Vocaloid and the like. Japanese people may ask if you like anime, because they have heard that many Westerners become interested in their culture because of this, but usually they're pretty happy about it, and are just honestly curious how you got interested in their country. I don't know any Japanese people who have even the slightest concept of "weeaboo" or "wapanese", it all seems to come from the Westerners who like nerdy things themselves!

So basically just relax. I don't know if you've been to Japan before or not, but I think once you have, and hang out with a lot of young people there, I think you'll realize how silly it was to worry all along. The only people chastising you are the ones who aren't worth listening to anyways, like the annoying bully kids in middle school.

I was referring to the actual characters as depicted in the comic with that comment though, albiet sarcastically.

They are drawn like this, literally white.

Which, as this whole thing stated, is actually meant to be nondescript but with Daves red eyes also gives the theory that's he's albino instead.

Oh god shut up about the feathers! Native Americans do not have some sort of exclusive patent on hair decoration.

I know *shakes head*

OC

So tell them it's okay to say no. As the other anon said - there's only so courteous you can be without having some form of ESP...and honestly? Being so courteous that your not even pursuing a possible friendship is a bit over the top.

Sometimes I almost wish the Muppets secrets would stop simply because I get all mushy and distracted every time I see one.

Then it makes me happy to know other people feel about them the way I do, and don't want them to stop. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Just out of curiosity, were you born deaf or late-deafened? I'm not jumping on you or trying to lead you into a trap, and I'm not deaf or hard of hearing myself, I'm just interested in your experiences. I can sort of understand being part of an insular culture and being wary of the larger culture, especially when the world inherently caters to them, and I can also see how that would be off-putting to people who feel like they are part of that world, too, and don't have an us-vs-them mentality.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Technically the word would be "ephebophilia" here, I believe. That's an attraction towards preteens usually between 14-19. The "in between" age, really. Pedophilia by definition is attraction to prepubescent children, which are very young minors far below the age of consent.

That said, I think this pairing is just silly. But me, the only person I didn't hate in the cast of FFXIII was Sazh. Besides that, I was more distracted by the fact Serah (or however you spell her name) does not look to be the age of consent at all. Her relationship with Snow gave me the creeps.

Useless if you want to get that super secure high-paying engineer job, sure. If you're just genuinely interested in going the international way after college, such as to be an ESL teacher, it's a fine major.

I wouldn't suggest it to someone who's getting a degree just for job security, but for people who want to explore the world a little, Asian Studies is a great start for that, and makes an excellent basis for graduate studies.

You will get pregnant... and DIE.

Dude, the Simpsons has sucked balls since around 1999. Don't feel cut up about it -- it's for all intents and purposes a completely different show. And watch reruns! Seasons 2-8 was some of the greatest television ever made, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this. It makes me wish I had read more classical novels when I was younger instead of bad manga translations. Of course I can't say reading a great deal of Hitchhiker and Discworld hurt my vocabulary. Not terribly anyway.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the wording of those posts made me side eye them quite a bit. I think his intentions were in the right place, but just not quite there yet. He really should have just not responded to the angrier folk as he ended up putting more feet in his mouth. Plus it made the initial post seem more disingenuous.

Seriously, you don't get brownie points the moment you go, "I'm not racist, YOU ARE. "
