I don't think learning ASL is fetishizing their culture? tbh, I'm sure there are plenty of deaf individuals who would love it if more people were able to communicate with them in that way. You should go for it, OP!

to add to that, my grandmother was deaf from a young age, but she was also Puerto Rican and thus her first language was Spanish. So while she was able to speak (english), read lips and sign, it was really difficult for me as a little kid to understand and communicate with her. If she was still around I would love to use ASL to talk to her, and I still plan on learning eventually.

Learning ASL is not fetishizing anything; that's like claiming learning any language is fetishizing cultures. I learned Spanish for shits and giggles and I am glad I did because it is fun and has come in handy! Go for it!

I think it's more the 'LOOK AT ME, AREN'T I SPECIAL!' aspect people have an issue with...which, in fairness, tends to annoy people irl too.

As far as OP goes - I can kinda see where they're coming from. It *is* annoying when someone uses a mental illness as an excuse to be a dick - or to get sympathy.

Eh, the diagnosis of Autism spectrum disorder is so broad now that you'll find relatively normal, functional people whom you wouldn't know had it unless you'd been told. This is one of the many reasons that - at least in my country - the government is reworking the definition of the disorder.
