I know it can be hard, but keep in mind that what you're seeing is extremism. They're the left wing equivalent to the right wing's Minute Men or some of the more vocal Tea Party participants. They aren't... rational and they make the job for the rest of us that much harder.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here to say this. Unfortunately, a lot of times the most extreme elements are the ones who like to scream the loudest, which drowns out a lot of the more level-headed people. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't go so far to call them equivalent to the Tea Party, given how little organization, or influence they actually have, but they do seem to me to represent the naivete typical of a lot of the SJW crowd. I watched a friend get dogpliled for trying to talk about outliers in an academic sense, because how dare you say XYZ isn't "normal".

The problem I have with them, is that if it's not perfect now, then it's horrible and needs go away, rather then being a step in the right direction to be improved upon (example The It Gets Better Project).

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. A lot of Internet "social justice" unfortunately lends itself to creepy One True Wayism, and that's gross.

I don't have a conservative bone in my body (eh, okay, maybe one or two -- I like Rand though I think she's usually wrong and sometimes fucking disturbing), but it unnerves me sometimes too. I do think the right wing is currently unfortunately doing a LOT of pandering to homophobes, classists, and racists, but I think it's an unfair leap from that to "every conservative/Republican/whatever is *ist."

There is no left-wing equivalent to the Tea Party, but thanks for playing.

It's funny you bring up atheists in your secret because there's a lot of wank over at that community whenever articles on atheism/agnosticism are posted so idk, the democrats part is right on the money but not sure about whether people don't have different opinions on the atheists they've encountered or how they are in social issues.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I must be more far-left than I realized, since I find most of their opinions reasonable.

I haven't seen too much atheism since I started lurking. I know some of their mods are atheists, but I haven't seen any religious hate. I've seen dissatisfaction at religious leaders and policies when they are involved with politics. I may be missing something though since I am an atheist.

My main complaint is the trend for using insulting nicknames for people don't like. Just because you don't like or even hate someone does not excuse you from being courteous and acknowledging that they are people who deserve names. It dehumanizes them. Besides it is ad hominem.

I actually enjoy reading their debates, but the frequent posters squabble like self-righteous children who've just discovered swearing and gifs and it's so fucking annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my opinions usually gel with them but they are pretty intolerant -- case in point was today, when American people were saying it was right to ban gay rights leaders from a Seattle conference because ~Palestine.

Someone rightfully pointed out that half the world hates America, and it would be just as vile to treat individual Americans like shit because of their politicians.

Also, treating oppressed people (GLBT) like that is just vile. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I have a question: I've only been on ONTD political once, and I had the nasty impression that their grasp of non-American (including the whole continent here) politics was rather... sketchy, to say the least. Don't get me wrong, I'd totally understand if theywere mainly focused on American politics, but I'd like to know if my impressions were resting on tangible evidence or not. Anyone? Bueller?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
ONTD is like this too. They're like the freaking Borg. Everyone has to like the same thing, and if you don't, you're ridiculed. It's a nasty place, really.

But if you can deal with that and don't care about people shoving their opinions and self-importance down your throat, it can be fun, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-18 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Given how awfully modded the place is, how is that any surprise? at least one of the mods does nothing but posts gifs to people who opened debates respectfully but holds a different opinion.

The members are generally hypocrites, and pick and choose their arguments for whatever ~cause they currently worship or demonize. They love dogpiling and relish in "being offended" and despite their claims of ~tolerance, they are the most judgmental shits ever.

I'm not sure I agree, as others said, about them only giving the OK to atheists. I saw a general disdain for atheism, because, I don't know, I assume white men. White men tends to be the default argument when they don't know what else to yell about.
