is it that it starts out as gen, but slowly develops into het? or are there just subtle hints at het that'll become more obvious later? context and intent matters a lot in this situation.

You know, not all of us who likes slash will run away screaming from a het story. A good story is a good story.

That being said, I do have preferences for certain pairings (both het and slash) and it does sort of suck if you're being dishonest about that.

It's courtesy to list pairings on fanfiction (especially on a site that lets you choose). What I take from this is, you're a dick. ;P

Also, yeah, I would be annoyed in your readers' case, even if I was a het fan. Sometimes, you just want to read gen. A pairing coming out of nowhere is annoying as fuck. So fuck you.

Well...that's kind of a dick move. Also, just a tad creepy that you're following your readers that closely [imo], but well. Not all slash fans hate het, but pulling a bait and switch/not having the courtesy to list pairings? *That* would annoy me more than any pairing you could throw at me.

They're slash fans. They're used to stomaching odd pairings in their source material, so it's not exactly a shocking twist, eh? On the other hand, it would probably be telling that your fic is just that good that it appeals to any reader (gen fan, slash fan, whatever).

That's really rude. People who read gen fic want to read gen fic, and don't appreciate a pairing coming from nowhere, regardless of their usual shipping preferences. And you do know het shippers have pairing preferences too and won't appreciate a gen fic that suddenly turns into a pairing they don't like, right? Not to mention slashers can ship het too.

I'm going to go against what everyone else said here and say write what you want. If you want to shock people, piss them off, then do it. Of course there will be repercussions unless you switch names but I'm sure you are aware of this.

I for one love troll fics -- the fic in Twilight where Edward got to overly excited and ate Bella's crotch and replaced it with bacon was hilarious!

Eh, I'd say that if the writer simply didn't provide any information regarding pairings (or the lack thereof) and just gave a general plot summary it's really a case of caveat lector.

Of course, if they're ship teasing the slash fans in order to do a bait and switch then it's highly probable that far fewer people will come back for the authors next fic; but again, if you read a fic that doesn't specify pairings or declare itself to be gen then you run the risk of the end pairing being one that you don't care for.

...Is it bad that I kind of want to know the fandom, on the off chance that the story being talked about is something I'm currently reading? (There are a few authors in my fandoms that I could conceivably see pulling something like this.)

That's pretty funny. Gen is gen, any other overtones are incidental. Hopefully you'll get to keep your fic just the way you want OP. It would be pretty stupid to have to label a gen fic just because of small changes or hints which occur later on. Doesn't that give away the story to some extent?
