I'm not here to say anything meaningful. I'm just here to gush over seeing Junsu in a secret. JUNSU! ♥

Oh, don't be shitty. You know there was zero evidence in that show to suggest that their relationship was anything other than boss & loyal subordinate.

+1

I can understand why some people who fit my understanding of the term choose not to identify as feminist, but there are some really unpleasant implications to people explicitly disavowing themselves of feminism while espousing feminist views. OP, if you don't want to identify as feminist, that's your business, but please don't act like those of us who do identify as feminist are somehow distasteful.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You just aren't trying hard enough.

AYRT

Which is exactly why I specifically said "when it comes to men vs. women." Also, non-straight, non-white, disabled, and poor are all things that can describe women as well. Those things are all problems and shouldn't be discounted, but in general society women are oppressed purely for being women and men are not (unless they're transgender). So it's a cop-out to say "I'm not feminist, I'm equalist/humanist/whatever!"

Use pseudonyms? Do write something decent after the shitty stuff and astound everyone?

Re: About the het vs. slash vs. femmeslash vs. gen thing

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-07-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any other fans who'll read pretty much anything as long as it's got a good plot, or is it just me?

Nope, not just you. And while I overall ship more het than slash, I have pairings in all three categories that I really like, and am also willing to read pairings I don't like as much - sometimes it changes my mind! I like gen, too, as long as it's interesting. I love character development/analysis and relationships (not just romance - platonic friendship and family relationships and mentor/student etc etc)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think its usually it's the fans of the BNFs that get shitty, not the BNFs themselves.

at least, that's how it is in the Harry Potter fandom. There are basically two prominent artists, one for the bad guys and one for the good guys, and if you say anything that isn't pure worship towards either of them (and in some cases when you draw the same ships they draw) they rip you to shreds :(

I think it all stems out of the fact that there's not enough good shit to read. Couple that with the magical idea that if fans weren't weren't writing all the things that I don't like, they'd probably be writing the things that I do. And as a final cherry there's the "Every time I have to use the scroll bar, I'm reminded that other people have things to read but I don't, and that's unfair" attitude.

It's irrational, but you know, frustration has to go somewhere.

I'm not really sure if you're really going for 'vision impaired' or straight up blind here. But for what it's worth, Riddick isn't really either, unless we're going to include every single fictional person who wears glasses (as that's about the extent of what Riddick's goggles do for him).

lolol, I was a little skeptical that anything would turn up, but here's my hedgehog: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=Evelyn+hedgehog#/d4u80bz

At least it's drawn well!

Actually, there were quite a few: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=Evelyn+hedgehog

this thread sure escalated quickly.

Re: About the het vs. slash vs. femmeslash vs. gen thing

The tension is unfortunately the natural result when you have an imbalance in power -- if you fall into the minority, it's hard not to resent the majority for having more than you (and often being an ass about it). Conversely, if you're part of the majority, it's hard not to be annoyed when members of the minority group give you shit just for being on 'the other side'.

The tricky bit is that this struggle varies from fandom to fandom. For example, in one of my fandoms, the canon het pairing is the biggest draw. This pairing has literally tens of thousands of fanfics written about it; fanart is easy to find; roleplay possibilities are endless. Everyone assumes that 'most people' ship this pairing and it gets shoved in your face constantly. As a result, the slash shippers whine about the 'entitled het fans'. This situation is then 180 the opposite in my other fandom -- the show itself is a sausage fest, and slash pairings are the most popular. In that fandom, the het fans complain that 'slash is everywhere'. As a result, if you were to look at my friendslist or dash, you'd wind up thinking that het and slash fans are always at each other's throats, when the underlying cause has nothing to do with the pairings themselves.

Agreed.

In my headcanon they weren't in an official relationship, but there were feelings between them(+ hero worship on Lieutenant's part).

Same here

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP. For a long time I wouldn't give almost any femchar a chance, ESPECIALLY if she was a love interest to one of the guys I shipped together. Not to say that I never liked any female character, but that the ones I liked always had to be either super badass (though not in a cliche way) or eccentric as hell. I'm glad I noticed this 'cause now, a few years after I noticed how misogynistic I was being, I'm able to appreciate female characters more, even ones considered "normal" to my usual standards.

Also: I LOVE THE WOMEN YOU MENTIONED. I fell in complete love with Prentiss the first moment I laid eyes on her (though I love Garcia more <3). Speaking of Criminal Minds, I would have hated JJ's character "Before", but now I can honestly say that I sort of like her, and she's the kind of character that would have irritated the hell out of me in the old days. She's not my favorite, but I don't flinch whenever she opens her mouth, which is a real step forward for me.

I still fall in love with male characters more quickly than I do female characters (usually), I still tend to enjoy stories written from a guy's POV more, and still prefer slash to het/femmeslash, and I don't think that won't ever chance. But, it has a lot more to do with my own preferences and less to do with any discrimination/misogyny on my part, which is a huge improvement all around.
terabient: Homura in defeat (Puella Magi: Homura despairs)

Re: OP

[personal profile] terabient 2012-07-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaaa? A huge part of the ending is the fact that Homura is the only person who remembers Madoka.

Anyway, I liked the ending, and a lot of that is because, as you mention, it's not a particularly happy ending when you look at it. Magical girls still suffer; the only real difference is that now, there is someone who cares for them, who makes certain that their grief isn't what defines their existence. I thought that was a really beautiful idea--that even with all the power Madoka's wish granted her, she couldn't stop suffering. But she could ease the burden of it, and that was a miracle in it's own right.

But, I can understand other people would find it unsatisfying. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven't seen much detailed discussion about the ending (maybe I'm not looking in the right places?) usually people just say they loved it, or disliked it, without really talking about the reasons behind it.

You put everything I'm feeling into just the right words. Thank you.

Now I'm gonna go cry. Because I wanted the show to rock, I was so excited, and after the first few episodes my little doubts turned into major annoyances and gripes and then I was so ANGRY and upset ...

I'm imagining all sorts of outrageous fart fetish-y things he could do "for" fans as a thank you to them.

I read that sugar free candy creates the best farts, the kind of farts that fart fetishists relish. Maybe he has a sweet tooth, but he has to avoid sugar?

Hey, maybe he's purposely flatulent to keep stalker fans off his back?

Well, the reasons you stated in there sound as good as any jargon-filled feminist reasoning. ;)

There's nothing wrong with being a feminist - there's no reason to go "OH BUT I'M NOT A FEMINIST".

Oh dear. Are you me? Because...er...yeah. *has gone anon for a reason* And other than Toph and Alicia Masters, I can't really think of any ladies either. That sucks.

Awww, really? That's a shame. But I guess you can respect the overall work without necessarily adoring the person. I think she'd say the group efforts are more important than the individual, anyway.
